Our family of 5 rented XC skis from Trax (nearby) and spent a few hours hitting the trails. The trails were very well maintained, not crowded at all, and surrounded by beautiful woods. It was the first time anyone in our family had been XC skiing, so we opted for an easy trail first and then slowly progressed. Some of my favorite vacation photos were taken on these trails and our family enjoyed lots of laugh while getting on some great exercise!

We had to go through Fort Wayne Wright military base to be allowed into the area for snow tubing. It was so much fun. Not crowded and very easy getting up the hill with a rope pull. Going down the hill was fast and fun! I hate roller coasters and this was easy and safe!!

I have skied in cross-country ski areas around the country and I really doesn't get any better than this. Snow is fairly reliable from early November through the end of March, and the groomers at Birch Hill do a wonderful job of maintaining the trails and keeping them in excellent skiing shape. Most of the time there are both tracks for classic skiing and (on almost all trails) a wide groomed area for skate skiing. There are over 40 km. of groomed trails and the park is open to the public for free, although donations toward grooming are gratefully accepted. The trails are generally hilly and can be quite challenging, depending upon weather, temperatures and conditions.
You should be aware that during the winter the trails can be busy, especially on Sunday afternoons when the trails close to the stadium are often swarming with Junior Nordics skiers. Still, once you get a few kilometers away from the stadium you'll find that you have many of the trails to yourself.

We came to the area for Christmas and decided to stop by and do some snow tubing. Unfortunately, the staff at the top of the hill dont really care what sledders do and it could have cost us a life last week. Signage for HILL rules should be visible, not just posted. Luckily, My special needs son did not get injured and only I walked away with a busted ankle. The hill is super fast and there just doesnt seem to be any supervision at the top watching tubers.

This was the perfect size hill for our family of once-a-winter skiers. The people working in the ski shop were very helpful ensuring our skis fit well. The kids had an instructor who was both fun and very competent. They had a great time with her. Though it's a small hill, there are great views. And we almost had the slope to ourselves. Do allow about ten extra minutes arriving for the security check as you enter the military base.

There is not a better place in the State of Alaska to ski on groomed trails. There are many trails of varied difficulty and the team that grooms them are top notch.

The Rec area is a good place to spend a quiet afternoon when you need to get out of town without having time to really get out of town. It is just far enough from downtown that you can enjoy the peace and quiet without spending an hour or more to get out of town. Nice trails for short hikes in the summer and nice skiing in the winter. All around a good place to spend a little time.

Birch Hill has an 18 hole disk golf course that is one of the best in the state. If you like to play disk golf then this is the place for you.

We are aren't ski racers by any means, but we like skate-skiing and wanted to find a groom trail; we were directed to Birch Hill. It's groomed for Classic and Skate skiing, and has a nice variety of trails, used (when we were there anyway) by young local racers. When we visited the large modern lodge wasn't open, but the rustic warming hut was, and it was fine for suiting up, warming up, and changing. I wish all local trail sytems were so well thought out!

Birch Hill has great trails for cross country skiing and running. Great place to have a get together or just go out on your own.

TRAX outdoor center at the base of Birch Hill rents equipment. I don't know about rates. You would have to call them. â€+1 (907) 374-9600‬
