- Ovmc1Madisonville, Kentucky1 contributionAmazing experienceVisiting AK for the first time dog sledding was at the top of my list of things to do. I read reviews on every dog sledding operation near Fairbanks and chose this one based on what I felt to be a good fit for what I wanted. It was hands down the highlight of my trip. Very hands on and personable. The staff were very knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. You get to see local people continuing an Alaskan tradition and learn the history behind mushing. The dogs you meet are amazing and well kept. The owners are training for the Iditarod coming up. Beautiful location amazing people and the best dogs. Recommend this place hands downVisited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 12, 2023
- Jamie M1 contributionFavorite Alaska Adventure! This dog-sledding experience is the adventure I talk about when friends ask about my favorite thing that we did in Alaska! Spending 4 intimate hours(!) with two real live Iditarod runners was different from the usual tourist/sightseeing and fishing adventures. The pictures and stories of 50+ happy dogs and puppies, mishaps and accidents were as thrilling as the "sled" ride itself. I left wanting more, but as it was midnight and the sun was setting, alas, we had to put this adventure to bed.Visited July 2023Written October 12, 2023
- Excursion672066275041 contributionAn Amazing dog sledding experience! We took our Mom to Black Spruce dog sledding while she was visiting from Ga, we wanted her to have a traditional Alaskan experience and we couldn't have been happier with our choice! Jeff and KattiJo (the owners) were our guides and were extremely personable and there is no doubting that they love what they do. It hadnt snowed enough yet for us to experience riding on an actual sled, we were pulled in a side by side, but the experience was still great! Our experience started inside their outfitter cabin/gift shop where they get to know everyone and then explain their history and the in and outs of having over 50 dogs and managing a dog sled team. Before we head out to meet the dogs, they be sure that everyone is dressed in the proper cold weather gear. We then walk out and are able to meet all of the dogs, be prepared, they are very excited to meet you so they will jump and want to give you lots of kisses! After about 20 min, its time to harness the team that will be taking you on your trip. Jeff was very informative on how to safely harness the dogs, if you are wanting to help, if you arent comfortable with that, thats ok too! We traveled a little over 4 miles and stopped multiple times to let the dogs rest (eat snow!) and for photo ops. After we got back we walked up to the puppy pin where we got to play with all the littles, they have so much energy and want you to know it! Our entire experience lasted about 3 hours. I would recommend bringing snow pants, warm jackets, neck gaiter, beanie or ear covers, warm boots and gloves. Bring them and put them on there. If you dont have all off these items dont worry, Black Spruce has some loaners :). Also expect the dogs to jump on you, I wouldnt bring your nicer stuff if you dont want it to get dirty. I cannot recommend Black Spruce sledding enough, we will 100% be returning with more family!Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 19, 2023
- JimBMentor, Ohio21 contributionsA wonderful mushing kennelWe signed up for a mushing experience based on a tip from Iditarod mushers we know. This was a great time and not only did we enjoy meeting the dogs, going on the road run, and seeing the mushers training for future Iditarod races we also got to meet Kenna and look forward to seeing her train and become a mushing racer. A good place to see a working kennel.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 23, 2023
- tripspba1 contributionFun fun fun! This was a very fun and instructive experience for me and my family. The guides were helpful and knowledgeable. The dogs were adorable, especially the puppies!! Having extra gear to keep us dry and warm was a bonus. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone who travels north! It was the highlight of our trip.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 28, 2023

The facility was well prepared with snow pants, over shoes, gloves etc. The drive up was beautiful but very hilly and icy, definitely used 4 wheel drive. Highly recommend it!Visited October 2023Written October 30, 2023
- SmyclimbPotsdam, New York14 contributionsWhat a blast! We visited Black Spruce Dog Sledding during our trip to Fairbanks in February and highly recommend this tour! Two days before our tour, we got a call from KattiJo that there was an unexpected issue and they could only run 2 instead of 3 dog teams the day of our planned visit. She was SO gracious and very upset about this and offered to reschedule, to allow us to cancel with a full refund or have only 1 of us ride. We chose the last option as I was really looking forward to this. When we arrived, KattiJo and Jeff had come up with an excellent solution which allowed my boyfriend time to visit with Jeff and watch the teams run. Hint: a snowmachine was involved! Skylar and Lindsey were the guides for the day and they were great. Very knowledgeable, friendly and eager for the guests to have a great time. Lindsey was the musher for my ride and she answered all the questions I had about the logistics involved with the Iditarod- dog transport, food drops, what happens with bags not picked up at a checkpoint and many, many more.Driving the tag sled was absolutely a blast and really gave me a taste of the intricacies and physical work involved with driving a team. Our only regret was that we didn’t get more pictures or a video of me on the sled. The temp was -21 F that day and batteries don’t last too long at that temp!! If your travel plans take you to Fairbanks, we highly recommend a visit here.Visited February 2023Written November 15, 2023
- Amy SDuluth, Georgia59 contributionsGreat experience!Great experience! Miguel was our guide and he taught us a lot about the team (dogs) and about the history and work and training that goes into the sport of dog racing. We had a tag sled, so my husband and I got to take turns driving the sled and riding. It was a great experience!Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 23, 2023
- Lia M1 contributionWonderful Dog Sledding Experience! We had an amazing time at Jeff & Katie’s home! We took a tour with Miguel and his dog team, who travelled to Fairbanks all the way from Argentina. It was so great hearing about his journey and seeing the love he had for his dogs. We’re so grateful that the Deeters have opened their private residence to the public to offer this wonderful service! Additional gratitude for the patience and kindness everyone showed when we played a short game of hide&seek with my drone. I would definitely recommend this place and would happily book again!Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 28, 2023
- Kim L2 contributionsAwesome ExperienceThis was such an awesome experience. We had never been dog sledding and I had very little knowledge of it. There were three dog teams on the property and we got to spend some time getting lots of pup loving before and after sledding. I would highly recommend sledding with Black Spruce if you are in Fairbanks.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 15, 2023

If you visit Fairbanks and miss this experience, you've wasted likely one of the best experiences you can have in Alaska. KattiJo and Jeff gave my group of friends the experience of a lifetime at Black Spruce Dog Sledding.
Upon arrival, the 50 dogs started howling which started the trip with big smiles on our faces. KattiJo and Jeff then explained to us the history of dog sledding, what it takes to prepare for and endure an Iditarod race, and a "behind the scenes" look at everything dog sledding. They even had a small exhibit highlighting their sled and how items are carried on the sled and the gear they wear during the race.
The next part entailed "Dog Time" which allowed us the opportunity to meet the 6 Alaskan Husky puppies and the 40 other 1 year to 10 year old huskies. The love for these dogs radiated off of them and their passion for the sport and sharing this with people was exceptionably tangible. We had time to meet and play with the dogs until it was time for the sled ride.
KattiJo and Jeff gave us a 'hands on' experience and assisted us in harnessing the dogs and putting them on the leash that pulls the sled. And just like that... we were off! Wind blowing in our faces, not a cloud in the sky, just watching the dogs silently trot ahead. We were giggling and smiling like school children. I'm not sure the last time I smiled from ear to ear like that for hours.
This made our trip, and it will make yours too. Go see this phenomenal couple and their happy dogs!

Luther was our musher and imparted a lot of nuggets about dog sledding. We gained an appreciation of the undertaking. Our furry hosts seemed quite happy to meet us as well and were even happier when it came time to show their stuff. Well equipped with outerwear for visitors in need, and everything went smoothly.

Awesome, just awesome experience. I was in the Fairbanks area for work and and Black Spruce Dog Sledding was recommended by one of my colleagues. They didn't disappoint! For starters, allow yourself enough time to get there. It took me about 45 minutes from downtown Fairbanks to get to Black Spruce Dog Sledding. Either print the directions they provide or take photos with your smart phone in addition to using GPS. I was lucky, my Jeep rental navigated me there perfectly, but the printed directions were nice to have because GPS isn't perfect in this somewhat remote area.
Anyway, upon arrival I was greeted by Robin and she spent 15-20 minutes on an introductory lesson on the dogs as well as the history of dog sledding. After that, I got chance to meet the dogs and harness a couple of them. We took 10 dogs with us on the tour and the route was beautiful. It's about 4 miles long and you get a chance to sit and stand on the sled (I tried both). The experience was unique, exciting, fun, and serene all at once. I left with some pretty cool memories and a new hoodie. I'd recommend this place and hope to visit again someday.

As first-time visitors to Alaska from California, we had no expectations of this excursion. We knew we wanted to experience this adventure, but wasn't sure what it would involve. We also were traveling with a child who is deathly afraid of dogs. When we arrived on site, Katie and Jeff welcomed us like we were old friends, reassured us about the dogs' enthusiasm and put our daughter at ease. It was incredible to hear their experience as Iditarod finishers and learn what that race is like first-hand. I am not sure about other sled dog experiences in Alaska, but this was the real deal! After meeting some pups they had on site, and then becoming familiar with the older dogs, we got up close and personal as we prepped for our sled ride. It was thrilling! And after, our daughter was comfortable with the dogs on and off the leash. I cannot recommend this place enough for a unique and wonderful sledding experience for locals and tourists alike.

Jeff, Katy and Emily were all amazing and were very helpful in answering questions. They made sure everyone was prepared to have fun abd enjoyed the experience. They took 6 of us with 3 teams all got to experience several miles of trail in the sled and on a tag sled the runs behind the musher, standing on the runners and using some drag mat and brake action. This is their dog family, business, and home. All so well taken care of and welcoming. I would highly recommend for anyone visiting Fairbanks/ North Pole Jan-early April or while the snow conditions are optimal. We may go back and check out the ATV experience in June .

This entire experience was fantastic!. The minute you pull up to the kennel yard you are greeted by so many beautiful dogs. Our guides, Luther and Mandy, allowed us plenty of time to greet and snuggle each dog. So many different personalities and all so sweet. Just snuggling the dogs was amazing. Then the fun begins when they realize the sleds are going out. The excitement from the dogs is incredible. Gets very loud with them barking and ready to go - so very cool. The sled ride was awesome. Luther and Mandy answered questions the entire way and provided details on what the dogs were doing with each turn or hill. Absolutely wonderful. Would highly recommend to everyone!

Highly highly recommend! The whole experience was so personable! Our group of four had two guides, Lindsey and Steve, and both were awesome! They laughed with us as we sorted through the vast array of random layers our crazy group brought, supplied gear as needed, and were so patient when a bathroom break interrupted their intro. 🙄🤣 You could feel their passion and energy for the dogs and the sport from the moment we arrived and it was infectious. We loved chatting with them about the Iditarod and the team they had on the trail at the time of our visit too! Getting to spend time with the dogs at our leisure and help harness/hook them up was truly unique. The dogs were so excited and eager to hit the trail and the ride was absolutely beautiful. We saw other dog sledding excursions throughout our vacation and every time our group unanimously agreed “Black Spruce Dog Sledding did it better!”

I came across Black Spruce Dog Sledding on a blog when I was researching things to do in Fairbanks, it said that they chose them because they were one of the more humane dog sledding places they'd found. I absolutely LOVED every second of being there. There was a big snow storm that came up the days leading up to our reservation so they reached out to us to reschedule. KattiJo was wonderful, we ended up having to reschedule a couple of times and she was very accommodating! We considered cancelling just because it seemed like it wasn't in the cards but we're SO happy we followed through! Our tour guide was Steve and he was very nice and informative. We had a blast playing with the pups and taking turns on the sled. The area is nice and clean and you don't have to worry about being trampled by 60 dogs when you enter. They all have their own space and love attention! I cannot recommend this place enough! It definitely seems great for anyone!
We don't have kids but as long as your child is comfortable around dogs I don't see any huge risks since the dogs are leashed. There was a lil lady (dog), I think she is 13, roaming but she was so calm so I would've felt very comfortable bringing our friends with little ones around.
The website mentions the dogs being athletes and jumpy, they are 100%, but I would say the level of jumpiness is much lower than a lot of jumpy indoor dogs. They were definitely excited but they were total softies and loved the lovin!

Katy and Jeff were fabulous hosts! They were very relaxed, friendly and informative. We asked lots of questions about the Iditarod race, the care of their dogs and random questions here and there. They were very open and answered every question with no hesitation. My husband and I did assist in harnessing the dogs for our practice run with 14 of their dogs. Jeff stopped and took pictures for us while we were out. We had a very long, engaging visit and learned so much about the sport, the races, the route, the care of the dogs, the training and possibly volunteer opportunities for future visits. We highly recommend this dog sledding experience and hop to return again some day for our winter dog sledding experience having done one 15 years ago with an outfit in Kenai in the summer. Just fun!! The dogs, Jeff and Katy thoroughly enjoy what they do, and it shows!!

This tour was absolutely excellent. If you are looking for the best dog sledding in Alaska, then look no further than Black Spruce. Very informative and great inaction with the dogs and the puppies. We were allowed to be part of getting the dogs ready for the ride and learn about the personality of each dog. The owners took extra time to get to know us and share about themselves and their history in dog sledding. We absolutely enjoyed it!!

Traveling with 70 parents , they are in decent shape, think they would be ok to participate?

Yes, I am certain they could attend and choose not to stand up in the sled.

I plan on traveling to Fairbanks in mid-September 2019. Is there usually snow in September? Thanks.
Written June 14, 2019
Hi, I'm not too sure. I was there in January, lots of snow then! . Best to email Black Spruce and I'm sure they will get back to you.
Written June 14, 2019
Hi
Coming over from Australia in April, will there be enough snow to do sledding?
Written March 15, 2019
Hi Melanie,
It really depends on when in April you will be coming. Typically we still have enough quality snow for dog sledding at the very beginning of the month, but by the middle/end of April all the snow starts to "rot" and we can do longer go mushing. Please send us an email or look online for more info.

I have back issues (disc problems). Are these rides “rough”?? Would not like to hurt myself. Thanks
Written February 6, 2019
It could be a problem if your issues are serious. You can always sit and enjoy the ride.
Written February 13, 2019
Hi can you tell me what time of year did you go
Written August 6, 2018
Is there a place or anything that I could sit back and enjoy the ride without having to control the dogs? I’m going with another person and we want to just sit and enjoy the ride.
Written January 17, 2018
You don't ever really "control the dogs" while on the sled. With our tag-sledding experience you are mostly in control of your own self and your own sled. The guide has 99% control of the dogs, although we will occasionally get your help to slow/stop the dogs by directing you to use the drag/brake on your sled. Most people do think tag-sledding is the best and most exciting part of touring with us, and is the reason we are one of the most popular touring companies in Fairbanks. But if you're feeling nervous about it should absolutely book your tour with another company.

What is the easiest way to get out here in December?
Written November 27, 2017
Hello! This is KattiJo Deeter, the owner of Black Spruce Dog Sledding.
We STRONGLY encourage all of our visitors to rent their own vehicles for getting to/from our facility. It's about a 45 minute drive from downtown Fairbanks (maybe a little longer if you're new to winter driving). The roads are usually pretty good (unless we've had a very recent snowfall) but you do need some good ol' common sense, a sense of adventure and an all-wheel drive or four wheel drive vehicle is SUPER helpful as well. If you must rent a two-wheel drive car, please use Alaska Auto Rental as they winterize all of their vehicles. Other companies like Enterprise and Avis do not winterize their vehicles. They keep bald, summer tires on their cars all year long and you probably won't make it to our place in winter in a small car with summer tires.
We do not advise hiring a taxi or using a service like Uber/Lyft. These tend to be VERY expensive - especially in winter - and unfortunately the drivers are not always reliable. If you do decide to go this route, be sure you get a quote from your driver before you book your tour with us. Let them know we are located 25 miles northwest of Fairbanks, in the Murphy Dome area, and that you will need their service for about 4 hours. That's an hour drive time each direction and a two hour wait at our facility for you to take your tour.
For more information on getting to our place, and some winter driving tips, check out the section on our website called "Driving + Dressing" (Sorry I can't include a URL link here due to posting restrictions from Trip Advisor.)

We will be in Fairbanks on June 1 & 2 and are getting a rental car. If we drive to Black Spruce Kennels for the 8 pm dog sled ride, what else is in that area that we can do?
Written May 5, 2017
Really nothing but the drive and view are amazing. It does not take very long to get there from town.
Written May 16, 2017
This summer (2017) we will be offering both a dog mushing experience using our 5-passenger buggy, as well as a "husky hiking" experience! For detailed information and photographs please check out our company's website (Black Spruce Dog Sledding). Unfortunately I cannot provide a link here as per Trip Advisor posting regulations. But if you search for Black spruce Dog Sledding Summer Tours in google you will easily find the page. Our website is very clean and easy to use. On the site you will also find a live, interactive calendar through which you can book your tour. Thanks!

Is this tour good for kids? We are looking at the scenic dog sled tour with out 7&10 year old children in December.
Written October 10, 2016
Absolutely. I would talk to the kids in advance about waiting until they're told by Jeff that it's okay to approach the dogs and be aware that they are very excited pre-run. They're calmer afterwards and easier to handle but there are still some that may be nervous around strangers. And the puppies are wonderful!
