I recently took the Wilderness First Aid class here. The class was very well organized and educational and the some of the contents were tailored to Alaskan Wilderness, which was very helpful and I am sure will be very helpful in prepping for some outdoor fun in the region. The instructor was very experienced and knowledgeable; she kept the class upbeat and made it fun to learn and easy to follow. Definitely will consider taking another class at the school in the future!

Love The Folk School! Classes come in a wide variety from experiences that can be enjoyed in a couple of hours to more in-depth workshops. I loved the Spinning in Color workshop and learned so much I can continue to explore on my own! It's a treat to just stop in at the cabin to browse the library or purchase gifts. So many reasons to visit and participate in classes - I'll definitely be back.

I have taken a few classes at the folk school and attended some of their events. Each experience has been fun. Most recently, my husband and I have taken ukulele lessons taught by Lisa at the folk school. This has been an incredibly helpful class for both of us, so much so that we now take our ukuleles whenever we travel! We love the present location at Alaskaland (aka Pioneer Park) as it is so convenient.

Have you ever felt completely immersed in nature? No cell phones ringing, or the ding of a new text message. The morning news can wait, and the happenings of the world disappear. You are now completely present in the moment of your experience. You awaken to the gentle sound of the birds chirping, or the buzzing of mosquitos, the trees swaying in the wind, and the smell of coffee cooking on a fire. Week in the Woods is not just a family summer camp, it is a life changing experience which remains indelible in memory, and keeps you longing for more. I’ve attended the camp two times now and with each continue to deepen my connection to nature, and develop a sense of wonder and possibility. There is something for everyone here, no matter your skill level, age or forest experience. Everyone brings something to the table and a community truly develops. This year my nine-year-old learned to use a variety of tools, experimented making mini catapults and boats, participated in a forest play with natural puppets, played games and had a blast. For me, I expanded my personal and professional life. I am an elementary teacher and can’t wait to share some new ideas and skills with my students. I enjoyed harvesting materials from the forest and honing my wood working skills in an amazing tarp covered workshop in the woods. I enjoyed some incredible company and made new connections. I cannot recommend this experience enough. Thank you, Folk School Fairbanks and Week in the Woods organizers. You are the best!!!

We attended Week in the Woods about 6 years ago (our last year in Alaska) and the only regret is that we did not find out about it sooner. The week we went, it was rainy and cool yet our two boys (6 and 10 at the time) still talk about it as their favorite vacation ever. We still have several of the items they built and most importantly, the skills they learned will stay with them a lifetime. Every single person, volunteer or guest, was great. We got to watch our boys learn skills that they could have never learned otherwise from amazing skilled volunteers. If I have to choose between a theme park vacation and a rainy week in the woods, hands down I would choose this every time. I have recommended this to many friends. If you are even slightly interested in this, you MUST go!

Week in the woods was like the summer camp I never went to. Sleeping in the boreal forest, surrounded by friends old and new, great camaraderie, supportive and skilled instructors... it was just wonderful. While many of the other attendees came as a family, I came solo and felt perfectly comfortable and included. I left feeling invigorated, relaxed and inspired.

Week in the Woods was the highlight of our summers as my boys grew up. Even after growing up, they would continue to drop in, longing for the relationships to continue forever with the people and the activities! It has become the hallmark activity of growing up in Fairbanks.
