About Trail Breaker Kennel
Family-owned and operated since 1976, Trail Breaker Kennel is one of the longest operating kennels in Alaska. The kennel was founded in Eureka, Alaska, by the late Susan Butcher, a four-time Iditarod champion, and David Monson, her husband, and Yukon Quest champion. Built on a reputation of exemplary dog care and hard work, Trail Breaker Kennel became the premier racing kennel in the world. Today, David, his two daughters, and dedicated staff members provide visitors from around the world a look at the lives of mushers and Alaskan huskies in Interior Alaska. For over 20 years, Trail Breaker Kennel has been a favorite stop on the Riverboat Discovery tour. In the summer, join our mushers and huskies on a Dog Sled Cart Ride, Mushing Demo & Kennel Tour, or Historic Kennel Tour. In the winter, hop in a sled during an exhilarating Dog Sled Ride, or build a custom tour experience with our help. Learn more and book your once-in-a-lifetime Alaskan adventure on our website!

WOW an awesome experience. Katrina was great never hurried and you could tell she loved what she does. The time flew by and I'm sure she had other things do but went over and above for us. I would recommend this for anyone visiting Alaska

Talk about having a passion for the sport. Katrina was friendly, extremely knowledgeable, presented her information in an engaging way, and was genuinely excited to explain and answer any and all questions. Truly involved in making you love the dogs and every aspect of racing. The puppies steal your hearts and I don’t know how some don’t end up being smuggled away… but the “boss” watches over them pretty closely to ensure they stay purpose focused… it’s all about the kisses. Being fully committed to the dogs and her racing, makes you want to be involved. It was never just “showing and telling” about their sport, but about involving you in their real life adventures with these beautiful dogs. Many thanks for a wonderful experience!!!

We visited here during our recent stay in Fairbanks. We learned a lot about dog sledding and were able to interact with the dogs which was fun. The setting is also beautiful. This kennel was home to Susan Butcher, the amazing musher and her legacy is maintained by her family. Our visit also included dinner and the dinner was not great but we enjoyed our visit.

We had the BEST time visiting the kennel! This was our first trip to Alaska and this will stand out as one of the highlights for sure. It was just me and my husband for the tour, and Katrina was amazing! She spent so much time answering all our questions - by the time we left she had almost convinced us to get into racing ourselves! The summer training run was really fun and interesting, and it's hard to beat finishing up the tour with 4-week-old puppies to cuddle! Can't recommend this place highly enough. Thanks for a truly delightful experience!

We love hearing when people enjoyed their time in Fairbanks with us; even better if it becomes the highlight of the trip! There is nothing better than an Alaskan Husky puppy cuddle ( to us anyway). Thank you for this lovely review! Thanks Again, Trail Breaker Kennel

The kennel tour was awesome. My daughters said it was the best part of our entire trip. Learning about the process and getting to see the dogs up close in their environment was so rewarding. The dogs personalities were apparent right away and it was interesting to me that they are just like our dogs at home when they aren't in "working mode". Cuddling with the 3 week old puppies and playing with the 3 month old puppies was the highlight. The grounds of the kennel is beautiful.
