Gari Melchers was an American artist who lived and painted at Belmont from 1916 until his death in 1932. Born in Detroit in 1860, Gari Melchers was a world famous portraitist and impressionist painter. He was headquartered in Paris, Holland, and Germany until World War I when he opened his studio in New York City and established his country home in Falmouth. In 1955, his widow, Corinne Melchers, donated the 27-acre Belmont property to the Commonwealth of Virginia to preserve and operate as an art museum and historic site. Her generous gift included the 1790s house, the artist's studio and contents, their personal furnishings, and more than 500 of Gari Melchers' paintings, the largest collection anywhere. Designated a Virginia and National Historic Landmark in 1966, Gari Melchers Home and Studio is administered by the University of Mary Washington. The buildings, gardens, and woodland trails are open to the public year round.Gari Melchers Home and Studio is one of just 30 of America's most significant artists' spaces included in the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Historic Artists' Homes and Studios consortium.Gari Melchers Home and Studio is home to the official Stafford County Visitor Center.

Our initial reason for visiting Belmont was to tour a historic home. Quite frankly, we knew nothing of Gari Melchers or his art. We were able to spend a lovely autumn afternoon on premises. A 15-minute movie in the admission/ gift shop building gives a basic introduction to the man and his art, providing a nice context for the house... More

Great activity when you're in the area. The tour of the house is interesting and informative, then there's the studio with Gari's art, and some hiking trails and a garden around the area. Very happy we came. We spent about 2 hours here.

I'm so very glad I made this visit. I arrived at a slow time, since tourist season is basically over. I was the only one there and I was treated exceptionally well. Gari Melchers was the most famous American portrait painter of his time - roughly the late 1800's to early 1900's. His paintings go well beyond portraiture though. Touring... More

Charming home in a beautiful garden. Warm, inviting and the studio provides a perfect backdrop for his large paintings.

Touring the Belmont Estate was a beautiful experience. The grounds and house are beautiful but the star is the Gari Melcher Studios which are full of his beautiful art. A must see for art lovers

The tour could take 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on your speed viewing the studio and touring the grounds. It begins in the gift shop with a 15 min bio pic on the Melchers. The house tour is guided but fairly limited to the living, dining, library and bedrooms. I was a little disappointed not to be able to... More

Definitely pretty, but not worth such a high price of admission. Was disappointed with the cost to get in.
