Virginia lends itself to pleasurable and educational exploration. Fredericksburg is a convenient hub or a place to stay overnight. From here one can explore Spotsylvania and Stafford following the Civil War trail and visiting Battlefields.

This part of Virginia had a significant number of battles with great loss of life on both sides. Best to read up on the history before embarking; there is so much more than the descriptive - while good- markers.

Several years ago a Boy Scout working on his Eagle project put together a walkinig tour of the various Civil War battlefields that allows scout to tour the battlefield, get a hands on (or feet on) experience and earn a badge. You get the info at the Fredericksburg Visitors Center. Great for scout but also for any school age boy or girl who wants to learn more about the war by walking the same ground the young solders did.

Colors were beautiful, sights were awe inspiring, and folks were super friendly...it's the south, in the fall, what better place and time to visit. Wish we had more time to see everything. History came alive...going back!

Being visitors from the U.K. and Interested in the Civil war sites we called here en route to Alexandria and made a point of walking the battlefield site around Marye's Hieghts which is in a fairly high location and standing atop can see and visualise the difficulties faced by the Union Army attempting to scale these heights have crossed over the Rappahannock River. For anyone visiting from overseas the area is clearly marked with many plaques explaining locations and events as they happened. Around the town are other areas of interest all relating to the events that took place here. The monument and grave sites up on Marye's Heights are something to see and you get the feel of what it must have been like during those dark days of the American Civil War. Within in the area is also other war sites namely Chancellorsville and Spotsylvania.

This is a wonderful way for children to understand the history of our country and how many people died for freedom

Hiking trails in and around the Fredericksburg, Va. area are unique and adventurous. I saw wildlife, flowers and awesome views of the Rappahannock River. Enjoy!

driving, biking, or even walkable education on the most fought over ground in the civil war, with multiple side trails and ecellent signage, pleasing for ant student of the civil war, neophyte or professor... but extreme caution required especially on toute 3, but much of trail is on scarcely traveled side roads
lots of wildlife, espscially deer and turkey

Nice opportunity to see a small museum's take on the local scene perspective on the Civil War in this area.
