Pleasantly surprised that it was Holiday open house weekend even though it made for heavy traffic on streets that we weren't familiar with.

This is the place where southern men repelled the assault of thousand of northerners that had come and ransacked Alexandria, Fairfax and Stafford counties stealing the livestock, furniture, silverware, personal items and even the glass from the windows of the houses of innocent Virginia families....More

Coming from the Charleston, SC area, and a local here in Fredericksburg since 2003, we have a based of comparison for a review of true historic preservation areas. This isn't one. Old degraded buildings, unkept row homes, uneven walkways, limited parking, poor lighting, over priced...More

The houses in Fredericksburg are a joy to see. We just took company to several artist galleries , lunch at Foode and antique shopping galore. Always a festive atmosphere and everone is very kind to help you get around.

If the weather permits, this is a great place to tour on foot. Stop in some of the local shops or just soak up the local history. If you have time ask about Chatham Manor across the river

Beautiful architecture in the Old Town with some museums and historic sites. Surrounding the business district are many streets of lovely old homes.

Had to walk off a heavy lunch at Bavarian Cafe and Old Town is right there. My favorite part was trying to figure out what businesses were in the various buildings 50 years ago.

The Old part of Fredericksburg did not seem to offer much when we visited, except for James Monroe's birthplace and Mary Washington's home. There are a few restaurants but we found the area not very inspirational.
