Bucket List Experience, Highly Recommend, Lots of Fossils!
What an incredible experience. Arrived just before 8 AM. Was greeted by the operators, signed a waiver, and was given instructions as well as a hammer and chisel. I was then given an orientation on what to look for, how to chisel the limestone, and all other details. I was given my own storage rack to store fossils while I was continuing my search. I found over 100 fossils. They have table saws available to trim the fossils down to size. There are multiple porta-potties. Bring lots of water, snacks, and sunscreen. Definitely wear a hat, pants, gloves, and a sun shirt. I'd recommend bringing bubble wrap, boxes/cardboard, etc. to package up your fossils on the way out. I'd also say it's worth bringing ear plugs, as the constant hammering can leave a ringing in your ears. It's very dusty--prepare to get covered, but it's a lot of fun and an incredible experience. Highly recommend!
Wow, what a haul! Glad you had a great time, and thanks for the tips to the future fossil hunters. Water, snacks and sun protection are a must. Come back soon!

    Amazingly fun!
We had a great time here finding fossils! Our guides made sure we left with full fossils. They taught us how to split the rock and what to look for. They are kid friendly! You’ll be driving on a dirt road for a good distance but the view is well worth it. Pack a cooler because you won’t want to leave!
We are so glad you enjoyed your time here at our quarry!! We hope to see you again soon!!

    A Fun Cenozoic Adventure
Taking a break from this internet age thriving for instant rewards, we spent a day with Fossil Lake Safari, taking away a tactile, fun and engaging Cenozoic adventure. Following the directions on the website, we took a scenic drive to the quarry. Upon arrival, friendly staff greeted us, gave us tools, explained and showed us what to do. Matt, the owner of the operation, demonstrated how to split rocks and patiently explained everything ranging from the how-to's, geological formation to fossils. Others at the quarry were also friendly and very knowledgeable as well. We found quite a few fossils, with my daughter having the best of luck of finding a rare partial heliobatis (stingray), all of which we got to take home. We brought our own lunch (sandwiches from the Opera House Store were great), and the Safari had snacks and spring water, which actually did taste better than tap water! It was a fun, enriching and rewarding experience, one entirely different from our daily experiences. I asked my daughter if she'd go back again, and the answer was yes. Well, I think we will be back!
We are so glad you had such a splendid time and Wow what an amazing find Congratulations!! We hope to see you again soon!!

    Great Day digging for fossils
We had a lot of fun! Shonda, helped check us in and explained the rules. She is very friendly. Kadan and Afton, employees, walked around and answered all our questions, they got excited with us as we found fossils. They even helped us when needed. Kianu, cleaned up our fossils and made them look beautiful. Each of the employees were kind to everyone digging. They let us go at our pace. We had a member of our family get a finger smashed pretty good. All of the employees kept calmed and attended first aid quickly and kept us grounded and even helped us laugh to stay calm. They took good care of us and made sure we got all our fossils when some of us had to leave early.
Thank you for diggin with us!! So sorry about the finger i am so glad we were able to help and lighten the load of the situation with a few laughs.

    Fun fossil dig!
Fun for family. 2 hours was just right for our 4 and 7 year old. Staff was very friendly and accomodating. They made sure we were on the right track and were very knowledgable. We took home several great fossils. Worth the drive and the money.
Thanks for fishing with us! We are so happy you have several great fossils for your collection!!

Excellent time at Fossil Lake Safari
Everything was top notch! The drive to the quarry was spectacular, the staff was professional, friendly, very attentive and helpful. They checked on me often and identified everything I showed them. Splitting the rock for fossils was like a lottery ticket....you just never knew what you'd get. The equipment was good, the rock with fossils even better, it split nicely and contained many fossils, both nice specimens and some heartbreakers. There was saws for trimming up the fossils, porta pottys and a place to get out of the sun. I came away with about three dozen nice fossils. There was a lot of rock to split. Bring water, packing materials for the fossils, lunch and prepare for a day in the out of doors. I'd bring my grandkids here in a minute. Would I go back...absolutely!
Doug, we sure enjoyed having you, and we would love to see you again. It sounds like you had a plentiful fishing trip! Thank you so much for stopping by!

    Great time getting dirty
I took my grandkids to the quarry on Saturday. After a little guidance from the guide, learning the rules and the best way to split the rocks, we grabbed our tools (provided by Fossil Safari) and started splitting rocks. In a couple of hours we were able to find some really nice fish. Everyone was finding fish and having a great time. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen or a long sleeve shirt an wide brimmed hat, the Wyoming sun gets hot.
Jeffery, thank you for visiting us! We are so glad that you and your grandkids had a good time.

Had an amazing time. Will definitely be back with family and friends. I could absolutely tell that everyone loved what they were doing by their interactions with the people digging. Everyone was so helpful and attentive. This is at least my 10th time at the quarry and September/October of 2023 visits weren't so great. This trip took all the less than optimum memories away and gave me back my joy in coming to Fossil Lake Safari. Thank you and please tell George hallo from his Arizona teacher friends. I really don’t like writing negative reviews but I’m hoping this is helpful so another person doesn’t have a similar experience. I am a huge fossil fan and drove 3 1/2 hours to dig in the Warfield quarries while staying in Driggs on vacation. When I arrived I was told that they didn’t take credit cards, or the person whose phone had the card reader on it wasn’t there “sorry I can’t help you”. And by the way nowhere on the website does it say CASH ONLY. Which would be very important to know given the 7 plus miles of incredibly beautiful but slow going dirt road entance to the quarry. They could take a check but not my credit card number/exp. It was about two hours before closing and I was told it would take an hour to drive back into town to get cash. The person who was “helping me” was less than sympathetic. I did not realize there was another quarry, American Fossils, over the hill- and the people at Fossil Safari did not offer that as an option. I get that they would gave been giving away business- but really? I was one person who would be digging for one hour. Just bad service, bad faith, bad everything all the way around. I DID end up at American Fossil and they were fantastic and have crazy cool information about a new species of turtle that they’ve found and you can keep 100% of what you find. Thank you American Fossil.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience at Fossil Safari. Beginning this season (2024) the operation is under new management and we are very focused on making changes to improve the customer experience including accepting credit cards. If you are ever back in the area please contact us and we can provide a free day at the quarry. -Matt

Omg this is a must do. Felt like family there. Great signs to find the place. They just put more up this week. New owners and the managing team is amazing. Caden was always there to help and teach. Doug was so knowledgeable too. We had a private dig and loved it so much went back for a four hour dig the next day. First day found 90 fish. Second dig after we became proficient at splitting the rocks in 4 hours we found almost a 100 fish. My son who is 16 found a crayfish, complete 22 in phareodus and a complete 14 inch phareodus. No joke had a once in a lifetime experience today. Stop thinking about and go here. Tile saws worked amazing too. They also have drinks available to purchase. Thanks fossil lake safari for the memories today!

We had chipped fossils the previous day at American Fossil. Staff there were fries and engaging. The following morning we went to Warfield. We entered the office to present ourselves and were taken aback by the lady in charge, a middle age heavy set woman who proceeded to tell us of the exhausting set of rules and protocols we were to follow. Each passing minute of her negative dialogue decreasing our enthusiasm. When we were finally on the quarry floor she seemed to dog each chipper making sure they were adhering to the rules. I was there with my wife, son and his family. All in all we came away with a negative attitude towards Warfield.

We're wandering the west and spent a morning digging for fossil fish. Great fun. They were nice enough to let us in even before their 'season' officially begins. Good people, nice fish. A bit of a rough road but we were in a Jeep and they were re-grading it at the time. If you feel the need to 'social distance' this is a great way to do it in the open-air sunshine.
