If you are in New Mexico, you must see Fort Union. Set in drop dead gorgeous plains, the ruins are so evocative of a bygone time. Paths and superb signage lead the way. Go!!!!

Hidden historical gem
Sep 2021
I had one day off last week and took a trip down into New Mexico to visit the Fort Union National Monument. I had never really knew anything about this fort and was surprised to learn it held 1600 troops and was the supply distributer to fifty seven outlying posts. At one time it was receiving three thousand covered wagons a year but now only adobe ruins remain.

So worth the stop off the highway
Jul 2021
A few miles off the highway and so worth it. Great stop that probably so many people miss. Such nice Park Rangers. We had missed the tour, but the signage give good info at all the stops. Such a large space to have a nice walk. It was free. Large selection in their gift shop. Really glad we stopped. So much more than we expected.

Historic Fort off the beaten path that offers more than we thought
Jul 2021
This fort had so much to offer than we thought. Great stop to stretch your legs after a long drive. The for was very large at one time, but you can still get the perspective of how everything was laid out, and some walls and fireplaces are still standing. Great tour guides. Nice spot that is dog friendly. Clear pathed trails. Nice breeze coming through the plains on a warmer day.
The Junior Park Rangers were very friendly. This sight is under construction but there was a mobile office pods in the parking lot that offers a gift shops with a bunch of fun & informative books, etc.

Important historical relevance
Jun 2021
You can just feel the history of this place as you walk around, imagining what it would have been like to stop here on your journey on the Santa Fe trail. There are various locations of the different forts, and it's interesting to compare. It is 8 miles from the interstate, but it's a great detour. The rangers were super friendly and helpful. Hardly anyone there, so you feel like to you the place to yourself. Nice bathrooms and gift shop. The visitor center is being remodeled, so there are temporary buildings right now. Wonderful stop! And there is charge to visit.

Hidden gem off the highway
May 2021 • Couples
After driving by the exit for Fort Union numerous times, we finally decided to take a day and drive up for a visit. What an incredible place. Staff was friendly and information along the walking paths was very helpful. Hard to believe so many settlers came through here on a daily basis.

Visitor center was open but limited to a few people and the movie/video was not playing. There are some picnic tables with shade in case you bring a lunch. Make sure to bring a hat and sunscreen as well.

Largest Fort within 500 miles
Jan 2021 • Couples
Definitely worth a side trip off I-25 to visit this historic fort. A ranger will greet you at the front of the main building. There's also a gift shop and public restrooms. Plan about an hour to walk the grounds & read the signage. The speakers will play recorded bugle calls every so often. Off in the distance by the mesa, you can see the remains of the 1st fort, but you're not allowed to visit as it's private property, but you may want to take your binoculars. The rangers are around & answered several questions.

So Unbelievably Windy
Nov 2020
This really is off the beaten path! You drive to the Fort across prairie (we saw lots of pronghorns) and it's located in a wide valley with nothing else around. Uniquely in the time of COVID, the small museum was open, so we could actually see the displays! The walking trail through the fort's ruins is about 1.25 miles long. It is level the whole way and made of crushed gravel. It was interesting to walk through the buildings and try to envision what the fort was like in its heyday. The only real negative was the wind. It was STRONG and bitterly cold. Without it, it would have been a lovely day, but with it it was pretty miserable. And apparently they have more windy days than not--one of the walking trail signs even mentioned the ever-present wind. So be ready!

A short drive to an amazing historical site
Oct 2020
Just a short drive off of I-25 is a for that was a critical element of the Santa Fe trail and the numerous trails in the region. What's left are foundations and walls, but what a story they tell. The size of Fort Union is impressive and makes for a enjoyable walk. Well worth the stop.

Not well known but very interesting
Feb 2020
This is a short drive from Santa Fe and definitely worth a visit. The video offered gives a nice over view of the fort. We enjoyed this place, learning about its importance and about the Santa Fe trail.
Most of the original buildings were standing and nice paths for walking are provided for close up views. Very interesting, worth a visit!
