Within Emmet park is a lovely sculptured rock from Austria. It is a memorial to aThe Salzburgers, group of strong settlers that John Oglethorpe invited to this country. They settled in Ebenezer just up the Savannah River. It is a reminder of these amazing settlers and their resilience to make it in the new world. Find a few cousins of one of the many families that still live here today and you will find a very proud group of people who are very proud and honored to call themselves “Salzburgers”. If you had never heard of them do some research you will not be disappointed!!

One of the things you come to see in Savannah is the oak lined parks. While there are many more famous and important squares, Emmet Park is one you will probably see if you stay around or walk the waterfront. It is right on Bay Street and a beautiful park near the river. It is a great inland diversion to a river walk.

Named after an Irish patriot Robert Emmet, this park overlooking the bluff has walking trails, lots of shady trees and man memorial markers. It is a leisurely stroll and a quiet place of reflection. The park stretches for about half a mile and some of the Live Oaks date back to the 1850s.

Located between Bay Street and River Street along the north end of the delightful historic district of old Savannah, Emmet Park is a must see on any visit to this jewel of the South. Stroll from one lovely monument to the next through this captivating and peaceful park and enjoy.

Once known as the Strand, this park was renamed in 1902 for the Irish patriot Robert Emmet. Emmet, who led an unsuccessful Dublin uprising for Irish independence and was executed for treason, was a hero to Savannah's Irish community. Emmet Park is one of the largest and most well-known of all Savannah parks. Beautiful park with giant live oaks covered in spanish moss and multiple sites to see. Definitely worth a visit.

We had a lovely stroll alongside the park on our way back to the City Market area. The monuments along the way are interesting, e.g. the monument for the Vietnam war with a helmet, boots and gun on top of a rock with a map of Vietnam on top.

The 40+ foot bluff on which Savannah is built has two walks -- River Street along the river and Factor Walk along upper bluff. Known as Emmet Park, the upper path is both interesting and enjoyable. Its green expanse is crisscrossed with sidewalks that lead across Bay Street to the Historic District and over to inns and shops as well as steep stairs downward to the river. Four monuments stand out in the Park. Chatham Artillery Monument dedicated in 1986 to the Savannah military unit organized in 1786 to protect the city. Also, The Celtic Cross dedicated in 1983 to citizens of Irish descent. A wreath is placed here every St. Patrick's Day as part of a massive celebration in the city. The Park is named for Robert Emmet , an Irish patriot who died in 1803. Also, there is the Salzberger Monument of Reconciliation dedicated in 1994 to memorialize Lutheran Protestants who came to Georgia seeking religious freedom in 1734. Finally, rising into the sky on a tall post topped by a light is the Harbor Light, a reminder of the lighthouse that once graced this bluff to warn mariners of the dangers of shallow water. The walk beneath a canopy of trees covered with Irish moss is a must when touring Savannah.

This long Park is located on Bay Street, and runs parallel to the River on the high bluff. It is named after the Irish Orator and Patriot Robert Emmett. It covers quite a large area a few blocks long, but it is very shady because of the canopy from plenty of large Oak Trees. We were able to walk the entire length of the Park in the heat because of that shade. There are also plenty of benches where people can read, people-watch or just take a break.

We had primarily come here to view and photograph the beautiful Vietnam Memorial – listed as “one of the top ten places to photograph in Savannah”. It really was lovely, but the bonus for us history buffs was to find several other Monuments in or around the same park – The Chatham Artillery Monument honoring the Military Unit formed in 1786, the Celtic Cross Monument honoring all Savannah citizens of Irish descent, and the Salzburger Monument of Reconciliation dedicated to the Lutheran Protestants from Austria who fought for their religious freedom. Nearby, while walking, we also saw the Georgia Hussar’s Cannon, George Washington’s Guns and the Old Exchange bell.

We spent about an hour here reading all the information boards about the Monuments and Memorials amid the beauty and the historical nature of this park. It was worth the effort.

This was the first open space that we found on walking out of our hotel, it is calm, despite being next to a busy road.

We were surprised by the number of memorials, and the detail of the Savannah signs giving the history of the various memorials.

The Vietnam memorial was surprising and poignant.

One thing savannah does well is maintain their squares and parks. This is well maintain. This one is not a Square. It is located along the waterfront. Emmet was an Irish Patriot. Very old monuments and the Celtic Cross are worth taking a moment of silence and soaking all in.
