About
A unit of University of Georgia Extension, CGBG is a historic property with trees and farm buildings dating to the 1920s, 30s and 40s, when "the Bamboo Farm" was an active USDA Plant Introduction Station. Today, new gardens and paths are being developed and installed. By increasing the plant diversity on the 51-acre property, CGBG aims to bring people in touch with the wonders and beauty of the plant world. Admission charge, free parking and amenities include a Gift Shop and two public restrooms on site. Among the gardens to enjoy include the Woodland Shade Garden, Whiet Garden, Water Garden, Garden for All Abilities, Orchid House, Mediterranean Garden, Rose Garden and Judge Arthur Solomon Camellia Trail. Numerous cold-hardy palms, bamboo species and camellia species are highlights in our botanical collection.

Our morning had been a wash out and so we didn’t want to go any great distance but wanted to talk a walk without wearing rain boots and jumping puddles. This was the perfect choice. It’s not huge and you can walk it in a hour or so. It has some GA history in its foundation and that is reflected in the old and new garden areas.

Price was right, 5 dollars. Iris snd Orchid displays worth the price of admission. Too early for strawberry picking. Unhappy that we could not visit shade gardens due to bridge being out. Also water garden was empty.

Beautiful gardens (seasonally) with lots of history. I visited in February, post winter and storm season, when virtually nothing was blooming (or even sprouting), and everything seemed under renovation and/or waiting for spring. All that said, the layout of the grounds obviously has lots of growing-season potential, Beautiful historic grounds with lots to see and learn. Highly recommended and I can't wait to go back and check it all out again during the "season(s)".

The gardens are fairly small in comparison to in other cities I've been to, such as those in Alabama (Mobile, Huntsville, Montgomery). On the plus side, the garden is free to stroll around. There is limited parking but this does not seem to be a very popular spot so it doesn't really affect the experience. The gardens are nice to take a walk around but it was very limited for the end of March. I figured with it being Spring, and once again, in comparison to other gardens, there were not a lot of flowers. It is a decent trip out so if gardens are your thing I'd take a trip there.

We picked up a brochure about this place at the state welcome center on I-95. It sounded great and we love gardens. We went here instead of Tybee Island. The place is a dump. The "advertised" bamboo gardens turned out to clumps of dead stalks. I found a few flowers in pots. Fortunately it was free. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!

Thank you for taking time to post a review.
I'm not sure you had a chance to see all the existing garden areas during your visit, but I can understand your frustration. Our bamboo groves are constantly shedding their oldest canes, which we then remove to make mulch. These historic bamboo groves are not gardens in themselves but preserved clumps that were first planted in the 1930s or '40s.
The water garden, rose garden and Mediterranean Garden would have all been presenting flowers and a pretty setting in late April/early May.
If you are ever curious about what's in bloom, feel free to view us on Facebook as we are constantly posting new photos of what is of interest in our numerous existing gardens.
We hope you'll come visit us again, especially with the anticipated opening of our new visitor center in the fall of 2014. We'd love to show you our new shade garden and progress on the new formal parterre garden and historic replica of the Trustees Garden (an agricultural garden started by James Oglethorpe in 1734 in Savannah).

The plantings are fairly recent so do not expect to see a garden that has been established for 50 years. The collections are impressive. I expect this garden to gain in beauty as the planting develop and grow and the formal gardens are finished. If you want to see a variety of plants from this semi tropical zone you will be very pleased with your visit.

Beautiful garden even in the heat of July! Bamboo maze was shady walk. The white garden would be a lovely wedding spot.

We drove 25 mins outside of downtown Savannah to visit this site. But, as far as we could tell, there is very little to see. They seem to have lots of plans, but the current reality is pretty empty and boring. A few clumps of bamboo and a small cluster of Narcissus and that's it?

We're sorry your initial visit didn't meet your expectations. Based on your description, you may have entered from Canebrake Road and only seen the open meadow and bamboo groves. Many gardens were just to the right of that area, at the paved parking lot near all the buildings and large shade trees. We already have a large camellia garden, orchid greenhouse, cottage garden, Mediterranean courtyard, rose garden, accessible garden, hardy palm collection and 50,000-gallon water garden. Depending on when you visited in spring, there are also large beds of bearded irises and daylilies that offer seasonal color.
We'd love to have you stop by to see these existing gardens (or the you-pick berry fields) the next time you're in the region if you have a love of plants and the outdoors!

Beautiful spot. Can see all of it in about an hour. Our kids liked the maze and tower the best. A lot of it is still under construction but still worth a visit.

We stopped here on our way from the Savannah airport to St. Simon's. (It's right on the way.) I know there would be more flowers in March and April but OMG the camellias were gorgeous. We also enjoyed learning about what the early settlers tried to grow. It was well worth the entrance fee and we didn't see everything. We'd definitely come back if we were back this way.

Exit 94 off I 95, Route 204 East is just about anything you want. Marriott, Days Inn, Sleep Inn, Howard Johnsons and more. We have eaten at that Perkins before, it's pretty good.

no café or snack bars, but they might allow you to bring in sandwiches etc to eat on the grounds. I would suggest contacting them to see if they would allow sandwiches etc. as there are beautiful areas to sit and have a light picnic lunch.
