When dropping off our college aged son in Savannah this Easter weekend, we decided to attend worship services at one of Savannah's old, beautiful houses of worship, Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church on Abercorn St. For those of us who worship regularly but find ourselves traveling during those days we normally worship, it can be difficult to know where to go to feel welcomed or find those intimate moments with God. On Easter Sunday in particular, my family wanted a place where we could go and celebrate Easter in worship. Upon approaching the twin towered edifice and ascending the stairs to the sanctuary, we were awed not only by the architecture but also by the number of young families and children who call this church home. We were welcomed when arriving and found our seats where we could see a chancel area decorated in lilies and spring flowers. The music was presented by both a brass band and a choir that sang a cappella but also could pull off presenting a moving piece by John Rutter. I met an older member and her daughter who sat next to me and made me feel at home in their church. For out of towners, we felt for that hour like locals who were there doing what four hundred other parishioners were doing. That was exactly what we wanted that Easter Sunday and if you want an experience like we had, you should feel free to attend services at Wesley Monumental.

We were driving home on Christmas Eve and saw the lights on and the ushers waiting outside of this beautiful church. We were very curious and decided to park and see if we would be welcome inside for a visit? The usher responded to my mother in law." You are always welcome here" and we went inside and were seated on the last row about half way through the Christmas Eve service. The choir was wonderful and everyone was very friendly. The church was decorated so beautifully for the holiday and we enjoyed sharing in the communion and candle lighting service with this wonderful congregation. It was a delight to see all the little children dressed in their christmas best and full of anticipation for the evening before Christmas. This was the highlight of our 2 week trip to this region.

This was one of many churches we crossed while walking around the historical district. The architectural design is beautiful and unique as well as standing tall near the square.

The commentary from our Hop on -Hop off was very interesting about the Wesley Church, including that a young Louis Tiffany designed the stained glass windows. We tried to get into the interior for a look, but it appeared as if it was all closed in early afternoon. In fact, many of the churches in the squares, other than the Cathedral, appeared to be closed.

This is a beautiful sanctuary, and full of history. The women who showed us the sanctuary were so kind and informative.

We visited this church for an evening concert that included American Hologram - excellent show and lovely that the church allows musicians to play here.

Beautiful old church, excellent choir, and wonderful, involved minister. If you're older, take a cushion - the pews get hard after a while.
