We were nervous about taking a dolphin boat tour from Tybee because I read that there can be heavy traffic to/from the island and we didn't have a lot of time. I found Mermaid Pirate, and they are located about 15 minutes from the historic district but didn't require going to an island, so we tried it. They do not mix people, so my husband and I were the only ones (which is nice, so you're not on a boat with tons of other people you don't know). This is basically a one-man operation, operating out of his house (located on a channel). At first we were a little concerned as the boat isn't very big or fancy, and the location was a private home. However, once we got in the boat and started, we relaxed and had a great time. John is very friendly and knowledgeable, and we found dolphins in several locations. We learned a lot about the wildlife in the area, and had a generally very pleasant experience. There's no cover on the boat (so no shade) so be sure to wear sleeves and a hat.

Started with the 7 am dolphin tour and had a great time! It was a little chilly so bring layers and a hat. Such a peaceful trip and relaxing boat ride.
Love the fact that this was a private tour. Just two of us on the boat. Dolphins were so beautiful to watch. We will be back to book another tour as well as the fossil digs. Can't wait for that!
I've done dolphin tours with another Tybee company. Their boats sit really high, along with 30+ people on the boat. Trust me, Mermaid Dolphin Tour is better.

We were staying in an Airbnb down the street from Mermaid Pirate Dolphin Tours, and decided to check it out. John took my family of four out on a private trip, and we saw lots of dolphins, exotic birds, and many of the nearby islands. Our two boys had a blast, and even got to drive the boat. This was very reasonably priced, as for other tour companies you can easily pay per person what we paid as a group.
I would highly recommend checking out Mermaid Pirate, especially if you're staying in or near the Whitemarsh area of Savannah.

Loved this!! Captain John was awesome, we were slightly nervous going out with just our family and the captain, on a small boat, ran out of his house, but this was an AWESOME experience and I highly recommend it!!!! We went on a larger different cruise with a bug name company during our stay and this one was so much better. Each person I'm our family fou.d several shark teeth on the island. It was fun, John was nice, whole thing was very relaxed. My ONLY complaint is that we weren't on the island long enough, and he offers other options to stay all day.

This was a great experience! My three friends and I did this tour and John was so very friendly, professional, and fun! We felt so safe, enjoyed the sites, and found some shark teeth. We loved that John does individual tours, this makes the experience even more authentic and enhances the experience for your group. We all would highly recommend anyone interested to choose Mermaid Pirate Dolphin Tours. Thank you John for a great early morning. Your gals from Nevada and Wisconsin!

Four of us hopped on Captain John's boat for a couple of hours of dolphin watching. We saw plenty of dolphins and enjoyed Captain John's dolphin knowledge and stories about the area. Riding back from Tybee was exciting. We could see a storm in the distance and we almost beat the rain. I would go boating with Captain John again in a heartbeat!

Capt John is a truly nice guy! He is very knowledgeable and wants you to have a good experience. I can’t imagine having a better experience, my kids loved the whole thing. My wife and I were digging and sifting along with the kids and with Capt John’s advice finding 38 shark teeth and having a great time. We went late 7p and the weather was perfect, saw the sunset over the marsh and learned a lot.

This was a great outing for a daddy daughter day. John was great and showed an amazing amount of concern for my daughter's comfort and made sure she had a great time. He was so knowledgeable on the area and the history it was like an extra perk of the trip... Also, I swear he talks to Dolphins. He took us around showing us the area and then was just stopped and announced, "there are Dolphin's here. " I am going to tell you I saw a lot of water and was just about to ask him if I was missing something when all of a sudden three where right beside the boat. My daughter was amazed and in short time more Dolphin's showed up. They seemed to follow John; I swear it was like they knew him. In short, I will be using John again. *he does other tours and has other options. We are so happy we found this gem.

Captain John was a great host, pointing out various wildlife en-route to the Fossil Island. We spent around an hour on there, using the 'gear' that John had on the boat. We then hunted for treasure, and managed to find some small teeth. Others on the island had found some bigger ones. The island had only a few folks on there when we visited.

What a perfect afternoon! My husband and I took our granddaughters, 7 & 9, on a dolphin tour with Captain John. We had an amazing time. John knows the waterways well and where we might find dolphins! He’s a friendly “old salt” who shared his knowledge and some fun stories as we enjoyed ourselves on a beautiful summer day. I’d highly recommend him and just may go back soon to find some shark’s teeth!
