It was the first time my friend and I went to Savannah, and we were looking forward to a haunted tour of the historic district since it is one of the main attractions the city is renowned for. Beforehand, I was expecting the average tour where the guide points at historic houses and squares and spits out 2-3 sentences describing each one, but our tour guide Dan went beyond our expectations.
Dressed like a gentleman from the 1800's and holding a candle lantern, Dan takes you right back to the earlier days of the city. My friend and I were the only ones to sign up for the 7:00 pm tour, so we got a very personalized experience from Dan. He loves history, and for all the stations we stopped at during this walking tour, he had very detailed and factually accurate descriptions to set up the foundation before getting to the legends or haunted stories regarding those places, and he also shares his own take or analysis on those legends which I found very interesting. Believing the legends or not is totally up to you, but you're still getting your money's worth from the wonderful history lesson starting from Savannah's formation to slavery and Civil War, and leading up to the preservation of the historic district over the last decades. Whatever questions you might have, Dan will more than likely have an answer for you because he is extremely knowledgeable about this town. He is not just limited to haunted history, and you'll find him sprinkling out fun facts and trivia about the different locations in the historic district. Also, who knew Spanish mosses could be a symbol, possibly related to the supernatural?
This tour became the highlight of my trip in Savannah since we learned so much in such a short time and developed a new perspective of Savannah and its history. And when I got back to my car at the end of the evening, I found a strand of Spanish moss tangled to my umbrella, so I guess I brought back with me a piece of souvenir from the haunted side of Savannah.
