About
Not your average "Dry" Museum, the American Prohibition Museum is the first and only museum in the United States dedicated to the history of Prohibition. While here, guests will travel back in time to the early 1900s, as anti-alcohol rallies swept the nation and the "booze problem" was pushed to the fore-front of American politics

Great Experience at the American Prohibition Museum!
The American Prohibition Museum was def a great visit! It was easy to get to (right in the Savannah City Market), navigate and provided a terrific history of the Prohibition era. We took tons of pics as everything was so interesting. We did not have drinks, but there is a speakeasy at the end if you want to finish the tour there.
Hi Chris! We're so glad to hear that you had such a great time with us! Thank you so much for your review!

    Better than even expected
We learned so much about American society and the movement that led to prohibition as well as the unintended consequences and what led to the repeal of prohibition. Leaned that the federal income tax was started to balance out the revenue which was lost with passing prohibition! A great way to spend a couple hours in Savannah!
Hi Jody, thank you so much for your positive review! We're thrilled to hear that you had a great time learning about American society and the history of prohibition. We hope to see you again soon for another informative experience in Savannah!

A great museum well worth a visit. The exhibits are both entertaining and informative. And ending up in a speakeasy setting is fun. Great cocktail selection. Docents are friendly and knowledgeable about the Prohibition era.

Who knew all the facets of prohibition...
We heard about this museum on a Savannah historic walking tour, and decided to check it out. It's in the City Market area, and at first, we it thought might be a bit "cheesy." But to our surprise, the museum does a great job. It tells a very thorough account of prohibition, its many factions, and public policy implications. Overall, a good stop - very educational but entertaining at the same time!
Hello SeeDotGo! We're so glad we offered a pleasant surprise for you. It's easy to not know what you're in for when you walk through our doors, but we like to think, we always smash expectations. Thank you for giving us a chance and giving us a good review!

    Worth the price
Walked through this museum yesterday after a day strolling through Savannahs streets. Very informative venue with friendly staff who are willing to answer any questions you may have. Nicely arranged and laid out. Very organized.
Thank you so much for seeing history come to life! We enjoy what we do! Next time in town come back and see us, much more to discover about this amazing time in history!

    Very Informative
I was doubtful about taking this tour, but it turned out to be very interesting. The on-line information seemed to be pushing drinking, which is a turn-off to me. But we decided to take the guided tour and were glad we did. Our tour guide explained the events and mindset leading up to prohibition, what conditions were like during prohibition, and then why prohibition was eventually repealed. I came away with a much better understanding of the history of that period of time. Well worth the time and ticket price for a guided tour (purchased on-line).
So glad you came by and heard for yourself this fascinating part of our historical journey!

Visit the museum and have a drink at the speakeasy
Interesting museum on the history of prohibition in the country. Uses a mix of mediums (wax figures, video technology, etc.) to explain the time period to museum goers. There is a speakeasy where you can order beverages (you can also get mocktails if you do not drink). Bathrooms are available near the speakeasy area of the museum. Bartender at the speakeasy was a little harried (perhaps short-staffed that day)? When it turned out the drink I wanted from the menu wasn't available, instead of asking/waiting for me to select another option, he skipped over me and continued with the next person in line, so ended up leaving without a beverage.
Thank you for your visit! We will address any concerns.

    Great museum
I love small museums dedicated to one particular subject. The museum was fun with many nice displays and I learned a lot about this small period of time in American History. It is located in the City Market.
Thank you so much for coming by and experiencing this part of our history!

We were told by our hotel concierge that this museum was one of the most popular and impressive sites to see. The museum was pretty boring and overpriced. The employee outside the museum offered us tickets to purchase a drink at the end of the museum. We purchased them. When we got to the bar we waited in line for close to an hour because they only had one bartender. We then came to find out that our tickets were limited to a certain group of drinks, none of anything we would drink. The person who sold them to us never told us that information or we wouldn't have purchased them. Very disappointing.

Hello G8446HOmariem, We are sorry to see that you were so disappointed with the space. With over 1000 original artifacts, wax figures, vintage vehicles, costumed actors, and a fully functioning Speakeasy, we do not typically get the review of boring. We strive to be a fun spot for the whole family, and we seem to have missed the mark with you. Our Cocktail Tickets are valid for a list of fifteen different Prohibition Era cocktails that all predate 1930 as well as our featured Cocktail of the Week! It is another way to continue to immerse our guests into the Prohibition Era. Our bartenders are fantastic at being able to find something that will suit everyone’s taste buds. As the bartender on duty yesterday, I can assure you that there was rarely a moment where I was making more than three cocktails at a time, I am perplexed at the length of time that was waited for a drink. Our cocktails are each handcrafted, so they do take some time to make, but certainly not an hour. We do hope that you enjoyed the cocktails that you picked. If your interaction was not from the day you posted the review, you are more than welcome to give us a ring at 912.220.1249 and ask for either the Museum Director or Assistant Director if you would like to provide us with more details. This will allow us to properly address the situation. We have been on the slower side recently, and a wait time should not have been an issue. We do have a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee, so please feel free to send in your tickets for a refund. We do hope that you had a wonderful stay in Savannah. Cheers!

This review is late in coming, but I feel it is due. My family’s last visit to this museum, around this time, in 2017 was wonderful. The docents were fantastic. A bar maid in the Carry Nation room was delightful, engaging and knowledgeable. She walked us through a bit more of the museum on her own accord as it was a slow day. The kid in the gangster room, another well read, enthusiastic player.
Then the cocktails at the speakeasy, out of this world.
My wife and I came back to Savannah with friends late 2021. We raved about this museum, couldn’t wait to show them.
It was disastrous. There was no welcome docent, just three employees dressed in sloven ‘period clothing’ talking amongst themselves. We felt in-their-way upon entering. There was no docent in the CNation gallery. After us rooming the room on our own for a bit, an employee was quickly walking through, and my wife asked him to make the portraits talk. He did, annoyed and rushed out of the room immediately after they started.
The bar experience: now I’m mad. Bartender was entertaining one party for so long, the whole bar filled up with more museum people, no one had drinks for a while. When we finally ordered and got them, they were beyond disgusting. We ordered the same as last time, we knew what they were, so. $70 for 4 drinks thrown away.
Maybe it was just a bad day idk, but I do know this WAS a must see for Savannah, now not so much. It was an embarrassing disappointment to say the least.

Hello James, This certainly isn't the type of review we shoot for and we're sorry that your experience missed the mark when you were trying to recreate a past wonderful experience. Usually, in a situation like this, we'd be able to tell you what was going on or have some ability to explain the circumstances surrounding your experience, but without any sort of identifying information (specific date, CASTmembers involved, drink orders, etc.) it's hard to give you any more details. If you'd like to message us any other information or call our Museum Director at (912) 220 - 1249, that would go a long way to helping us understand what went wrong. The most troubling quality of your review is the claim that our docents are cold or unwelcoming. The CAST we currently have is superb and not a single one is prone to treating folks as "in their way" and they're all usually happy to get the portraits chatting with each other. We can see a situation where they might be in a rush, but not one where they are genuinely annoyed with our guests. They take guest service seriously and we almost never hear any feedback approaching what you've detailed. As for your bar experience, it's a head-scratcher. Whichever drinks you ordered a couple years ago are the same exact recipes, down to the liquor brands used, as they were then. As we do a period-accurate cocktail menu during the day, these cocktails literally haven't changed in a full 90 years. They are the same in 2021 as they were in 2017 and as they were in 1930. Also, unless you ordered high-end liquors off-menu, our drinks simply don't cost that much. Every one on our daytime menu costs $12 at the most and $10 if you pre-purchase them. That's almost half your cited cost for four drinks. Frankly, we'd love to be able to tell you what went wrong and we hope you'll provide some information to help us figure it out. As you can see from all of the reviews surrounding yours, our Museum is still very much considered the must-see that you found it to be at first. We're certain that if you give us another chance, you'll find your experience much more like the first visit than the second. Should that not be the case, we would appreciate some communication at the time of the experience so that we can immediately investigate and rectify any issues in the moment. This isn't what we do and when a review departs this far from the norm, it's something we take seriously. We do hope you'll supply some more of what you might remember to that end. No matter what, we still appreciate you taking the time to leave feedback and we'll be sure to watch out for this sort of thing for some time. Thank you.

We had a great visit. The museum was informative, a fun way to learn history because of the interactive nature of the museum.

We had a group of 8, that ranged from 10 - 70 years old and it was a great experience for all of us. One of the benefits is that you can move through the museum at your own pace.

I was skeptical but this museum delivered. The displays are very well done with alot of engaging elements to keep interest while flowing through the details. There are live action sections as well as animation graphics, keeping visual stimulation and forward movement through the museum. There is a "speak easy" toward the end of the museum which is a very nice touch. I am bit of a museum snob and this one passes my test. Highly recommend an hour long visit.

I am so glad we bought a ticket for this museum. This is a self-guided tour museum that takes you through the entire history of Prohibition in America to the creation and abolishment of the 18th amendment. We took our time and read everything along the way during the tour so it took us about 2 hours to get through it. Others were moving at a faster pace but we wanted to take our time and enjoy and learn.
There are original artifacts available to look at from that era and wax figures of actual people.
Almost at the end of the tour, you can stop in at the Speakeasy for a drink. There is a gift shop available for souvenirs at the end.

We decided to stop in here on a rainy day since it was right by our hotel. We sure were glad we did! To do the museum correctly it will take a lot of time, that is if you want to read everything. There are a lot of original articles and artifacts! Something else that’s a lot of fun, they have a speakeasy inside! All the cocktails were prohibition themed, and delicious. The bartender was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Overall, a fun way to spend a rainy day, or any day if you enjoy history.

Such a gem in City Market. Learned a bit about Wet/Dry prohibitions in the 20s and they even have a speakeasy inside where you can reserve to eat and drink. If you just want to see the museum, it takes about 45 minutes to go through

The museum information, itself, was interesting but the whole "covid experience" ruined it. First, the man at the door was rude about wearing a mask. You can ask customers politely. The most annoying part, though, was the hundreds of posters, made to look like they were part of the museum experience, that were actually telling you over and over and over again, to wear your mask and stay 6 ft apart. WE GET IT! The whole country gets it. One sign per room would have been sufficient but they were everywhere, mixed in with the museum exhibits. You're trying to read about the history of prohibition and then you find yourself reading yet another stupid covid poster. Making them look like an exhibit, instead of public information, made it even worse. Hopefully things get back to normal soon so people can enjoy the museum without the nuisance.

Hello GraceFaith77777, Honestly, I'm shocked by this review. We have had dozens of good reviews regarding our COVID measures, specifically about the thematic way we have done so. Our posters aren't "stupid", they are replicas of the Spanish Flu Epidemic posters produced by the American Government in 1918. Regardless, we have 36 of those posters throughout, not hundreds. I suppose that all I can say is that this is your opinion, and you're entitled to it. However, I hope that others take a look at your review, see that you commented the museum was interesting, and take the rest of the review as proof that we not only care about guests staying safe in these exceptionally dangerous and trying times, but also want their experience to still be as immersive as possible. Feel free to send back your tickets for a refund, as we have a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee.

Everything you know and didn’t know about the prohibition era. From the interactive exhibits, costumed docents, collectable items and fun fact boards there is a lot to take in. Fun, interactive as you journey through prohibition understanding the how and why. Tour ends in a speakeasy where the drinks flow. Located in the City Market, it was a fun addition to the afternoon. If you have done the Old Town Trolly there is a discount to the Museum too.

The Prohibition Museum occupies a space between entertainment and education. It's a museum where you walk through halls with staged mannequins and scenery, props for taking fun photos and a "speakeasy" at the end of the exhibits. It also has artifacts and informational content - mostly dense, long passages that seem like they might have been included more to make the museum seem educational rather than because they actually thought anyone would read them (I had to kneel on the floor and move something out of the way to finish reading one plaque). I mostly liked the presentation, as it made a "dry" (no pun intended) subject involving constitutional law pretty interesting. I would have liked to see a bit more attention paid to the scholarly aspects, with material presented in a more accessible manner than walls of text.
