This temple, with its guided tour and museum, was a pleasant surprise. I've visited temples all over the world, but was unaware of this one, which dates to 1733, when small groups came from Portugal (via England) and to create the congregation. The architecture of the temple is church-like, unlike most temples, with pews, a nave, and transept. The exhibits,... More

We had never been to Savannah, GA before - it was the third city we visited on our Inter-coastal river cruise. We had heard about Congregation Mickve Israel during our morning city tour, and decided to go back and visit it in the afternoon. The Congregation has a wonderful and important history. It is the third oldest Congregation in the... More

Take the tour of the synagogue. I had never heard of this congregation and its rich history. The tour is relatively short but worth the time.

Before we visited Mickve Israel, we had no idea Savannah had the third oldest Jewish temple in the US, or the fourth oldest Torah in the world. This place is chock full of history, and our tour guide, Kerry Rosen, was spectacular. Her pride in the building and its history shone through. And it's a beautiful building. Don't miss it!

This is the third oldest continuous reform congregation, since 1734. They have volunteers who give a tour and historical exposition, very interesting. There is also a museum with various Torahs, some extremely old.

Had a tour today of the temple with volunteer Joel Weiner and it was wonderful. The temple was fascinating and is the third oldest in North American and even has some of the oldest Torahs in the world dating back to the 1400s! I am not Jewish and yet found the tour to be extremely interesting and moving. Joel's love... More

The tour offered at Mickve Israel should definitely be on your list as you sight-see Savannah. Even non-Jews will appreciate the historical significance of the third-oldest Jewish congregation in the US. Not only is the building's interior unlike 99% of other synagogues, but one learns a whole lot about Savannah history. Pat, our tour guide, was a hoot! Well worth... More

For $8, you can get a small tour group led by a volunteer congregant who is well versed in the history of Judaism in Savannah, as well as the building itself. You tour the sanctuary, the Bima (and see the Torahs - the Holocaust one is very interesting) and travel upstairs to the small museum they have. I actually learned... More

Savannah was established in 1733 by J Oglethorpe and within 6 months the Mickve Israel congregation had formed, making it one of the oldest and longest-continually active congregations in the US. The interior has beautiful stained glass, bimah and torahs. The docents are very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. This is a must-see place!
