- Tx300aacDallas, Texas68 contributionsLife Changing tripLife changing Encounter I’ve wanted to come here for years. As a first generation American, the son of immigrants, it’s so important to visit a place so powerful so defining as this fort. It makes the national anthem come to life. Every family in the USA needs to visitVisited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 21, 2023
- kghudsonHouston, Texas454 contributionsCool Spot of HistoryWas here on a sunny but windy coolish day. Tons of new to me information presented in a realistic and open manner. Visitors Center had a short movie and brief history of the fort. Also had a souvenir shop and clean restrooms. No food service, free parking and waterfront views. Fort itself was interesting and there was a volunteer docent there to answer questions. Used the senior pass to enter and got national park book stamped.Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 22, 2023
- Everett SHummelstown, Pennsylvania51 contributionsSmall but MightyThe Fort is not very large and because of its structure, is barely a blip on the horizon. The earthwork hide most of the inner structure from view, but its small size speaks volumes of the brave men and women who were there during that faithful day and night. The separate visitor center starts your tour with a short historical review, complete with flashing red lights to emphasize the fires in the show and finishes with the movie screen lifting to reveal the fort as the Spar Spangled Banner is sung. The Fort of to day included surroundings earth works, the star wall, cannon ( not the original), six (6), buildings you can enter with historic and archeological presentations and the most important aspect, the flag pole. At least when we went, there were no guides in the fort, but each building has displays to read and artifacts to view, that very effectively tell the tale of its history. The real impact is in the comparison of its size and what it accomplished. This is really one of America’s pivotal David versus Goliath moments, when the might of the American government has been questioned and the “aristocrats” in Washington DC are running with their valuables as the city burns, but little Baltimore, with its tiny fort, in true American style, says NO. We all want our children to be happy, and healthy and not to know the pains of war, but maybe it is this defiance that makes America, America. The grit that pushes us forward toward innovation and protects us when the governments cannot. This is a rare “teaching moment” for a complacent society who wants others to solve our problems. Don’t let is go by or this just becomes a nice little fort, with a big flag.Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten January 15, 2024
- G LHalethorpe, Maryland5 contributionsLearned A LotI went during the last week of March so the cherry blossoms were in bloom which were beautiful. They had a video in the visitor center and then I went on a 30 minute tour which was included in the $15 ticket pric (I would check the website to see the tour times throughout the day. Also, to hike the grounds is free but to get to the actual fort area is what costs $15 (see attached picture for what is free). I would recommend paying to see inside of the fort, as you can enter the barracks and the magazine where they stored their gunpowder. Each place you can go into also has exhibits so you are able to see the transformation of the fort from the Battle of Baltimore, to a camp for POW during the Civil War, to a base for WW2. There are also picnic tables if you want to pack food! Overall, a great trip! Also, if you wanted to see the Francis Scott Key Bridge there is a perfect view of it and what remains.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 29, 2024
- CatherineCelloAvon, Ohio100 contributionsAbsolutely wonderful, even for young kidsI was looking forward to going here and it was so much better than I expected! The visitors center is very nice and they have interactive guide books for the kids that were fun. The kids also get a badge at the end of their visit. The 4 min video in the visitor center is well done too. The Fort itself has been preserved so well and it was both fun and educational for my boys to get to go into the many spaces. We ended up spending twice as long there as we thought we would. I would say this is a must see in Baltimore!Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 4, 2024
- Alicia_JA360 contributionsIncredible History on the Patapsco RiverWhat amazing history! The grounds are beautiful and the fort is well maintained. The NPS rangers were friendly and the visitor center is comfortable and has a great museum and gift shop. By chance, we were scheduled to visit the day after the Francis Scott Key bridge collapsed. We were able to see the Dali still stuck in the wreckage on the Patapsco River.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 6, 2024

- Lou PKansas City, Kansas357 contributionsFort Flag historyWe finished most interior displays which were good. As we headed out to tour the earthworks, we had a deluge that drenched us before we could even get our ponchos on. Some of our group finished that part, following the rain and before the next downpour hit. Much of the activity centered around the flags, as it should, history of it, some personal opinions of the NPS ranger, more explanation of the retiring of the flag and then we watched some young people participate in that, which seemed appropriate. The film in the visitor center was impressive and we enjoyed the ending reveal.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 25, 2024

The movie there is a great introduction to the site and tells the story of the Star Spangled Banner well. The day we were there, there were volunteers explaining how a cannon was fired and costumed players explaining life during the time. The path around the Fort is a nice, easy walk.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 28, 2024

Visitor center was closed. Well in to the month of September and people are still having to put up with this foolishness. A huge disappointment and total waste of time. Vice President Pence recently visited here and I can guarantee the park and center were open then.

Visited the Baltimore area during President’s weekend, as the kids wanted to go to the aquarium, but us parent’s made them come to Fort McHenry first.
This is a national treasure that will make your chest burst with pride and your eyes well with tears. You must watch the movie in the visitor center before venturing any further. It is a great introduction into the history of the fort and the ending is a wonderful surprise. The fort itself is well preserved and a great place to explore. There is so much to learn and the Rangers are more than happy to share their wealth of knowledge. They want you to know and understand the importance of the fort in American history. All that you learn at the fort will bring new meaning and understanding of our national anthem. You will no doubt have a better appreciation of the words Francis Scott Key penned.
We spent quite a while at the fort and visitor center, so much so we did not visit the aquarium until the next day and as we left the kids said, “we really liked this” How can you not??

Stopped here on our way passing thru Baltimore, and so glad we did. The history of this place is amazing. Very well presented, and superb preservation. Park Rangers are very friendly and knowledgeable. And, they really love their jobs, making all that much better.
IMHO anybody who has any sense of pride in the USA or wants to know what its all about should spend at least a few hours here. Pretty sure all those sports “stars” (loosely defined...) that take a knee during the National Anthem might rethink their position at least a little bit.
Another very awesome thing they do, and I don’t know if its done all the time, but they allowed my wife and I to hoist and lower the flag. We cannot tell you the feeling that gives you to participate in a ceremony that commemorates yet another defining victory that a fledgling country had over the most formidable military of the time. And as the inspiration for the composition of our National Anthem, the Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key, hearing it sung and singing along brings it into a whole new light. Truly a honor and humbling experience. And to honor those who fought and died, and for God’s providence over this nation, it’s something no one should miss.
They also allow you to bring your own flag, and they will fly it over the fort. We will be back with the flags that were presented to us fir our parent’s service to the country.
This is a must do for you if you’re in the area.

What a gem! From a crucial defence of Baltimore in the War of 1812 to the birth of the Star Spangled Banner, this is a must see!
Fort McHenry sits just a short bus ride (take the free Blue Banner bus from Baltimore's Inner Harbour) from the city and National Park fees apply (US$ 15 in mh case). This is money well spent as the presentation of the history of the US anthem and the exhibition in the visitor centre are brilliant. Visitors then head outside and over to the Fort, which has been beautifully restored and staff are on hand with plenty more information.

We LOVE IT HERE!
It's always a great time to watch the barge's load, unload, enter port and leave port.
Although the Canada wildfire smog had moved in and it was hard to see across the inner harbor, we still enjoyed sitting in the grass with our young family and dog and watching everything. Sail boats, motor boats, yachts, a man fishing with his two grandsons (and catching fish!).
There is a lovely path to walk around the entire park.
We saw reenactors firing their muskets and a park ranger telling a group about the original flag while having them all hold it out to see.
We heard later from a local that the Fort McHenry Tunnel air exchange goes through the actual Fort. We hadn't know that though so didn't notice. There is a fence around the Fort so I'm not sure if you have to pay to go near it or not. We just walk around it.
Bathrooms are lovely, too inside the Gift Shop/Museum. You do not have to pay to use the bathrooms and they are easily accessible.

The park opens at 8am, but for some reason they don't open the visitors center until 9am. I arrived on a city bus at about 8:30. That was a bit of an issue, because you're supposed to pay your fees and get a wristband before visiting the rest of the park. I had paid my fees online, but multiple park employees questioned me because I didn't have a wristband. I showed them the receipt on my phone, but they still didn't like that I didn't have a wristband. Why doesn't the visitors center open when the park does? It's just silly to have two different sets of hours.
For the $15 admission they charge, there really doesn't seem to be much here. It's an old fort, and yes it was historic as the inspiration for writing the National Anthem. There's not much of anything to see at the fort, though, and when I finally was able to get to the visitors center, there wasn't really anything they explained there that I didn't already know.
I probably should have just followed the locals in using the park as a jogging trail and avoided the fort and visitors center all together.

One of the best parts of Baltimore. Located in South Baltimore, right near the Locust Point neighborhood. Fabulous views of the water and Sea Wall Trail, measuring about one mile around. The grounds at the site are well-manicured and pristine. Public rest rooms are available at the visitor center. Take a tour with paid entry or walk the grounds (not inside the fort) by yourself. Bear witness to the changing of the flag during your visit and listen to a fife and drum band. This is truly historic and worth the visit. We've lived in Maryland for the last 25 years, and we've only recently discovered the walking trail and the fort itself. The trail is peaceful and quiet, benches all along the way, with a full 360-degree view of the fort. The water is beautiful and incredibly tranquil. By all means, spend an hour or the whole day here. It is most certainly worth the visit. History buff or not, Fort McHenry is a tremendous site to witness first hand.

This fort is a great piece of American history. Everyone should be able to get a chance to visit it at least once in their lifetime.
It’s easy to get to,, actually there’s a free bus that stops in front of the Royal Sonesta hotel that will take you directly to the fort for no charge. Nice. The gift shop and visitor center was closed when I arrived.
It’s a pretty big place, I plan on doing some decent walking. Lots of cannons surround the fort and there’s replica buildings as well. Some original historic artifacts are located in some of these buildings too.
The national park did a great job on this place. Come see where history was made.

The visitor center was open the day after Labor Day. Don't miss the exhibits inside... they give a meaningful and inspiring intro to the fort.
If you bring your own US flag or buy one in the gift shop (I heard that their small flags cost $60! Maybe they're handmade??), you and a ranger can raise and lower it on the flagpole inside the fort. Then you and the ranger re-fold the flag properly. (If you aren't familiar with this, it's good to know.) You'll get a certificate too.

Is there parking at Ft. McHenry? What is the cost if so? Thank you!

I would like to take a bus (#94) to visit the Fort. According to what I can find on the internet, the bus stops about a thousand yards from the actual Fort (or maybe the visitor's center?)
Is there any type of ground transportation from the bus stop to the Fort?
Would Taxi's be available at the site?
It will be hot in June and I'm a retiree who is not interested in dying of heat exhaustion at a national park!
Any help will be appreciated! Thanks.

Yes the ccc free bus also stops right at the gate. It’s a bit of a hike out to the gate, so recommend an Uber if not up to waiting or hiking in the sun.

Can someone please tell me how I can get from train station to Fort McHenry. this will be our first time on metro's and trains, we are from a small town in Louisiana. need all pointers I can get. You could either take a cab or the free bus called the Circulator. You would take the Banner Route on the Circulator to go from downtown to Ft. McHenry. It's 3 miles from the Inner Harbor to the Fort, so definitely walkable if you're up for it. It's not bad as long as the weather's nice. You'd see a few mediocre blocks with a lot of traffic, but you'd also see a lot of charming neighborhoods with different types of rowhouses. It's a good way to get a feel for the southern part of the city. (Oh, but which train are you taking? The Penn Line which drops you off 2 miles north of the harbor, or the Camden Line, which drops you downtown?)

there is no restaurant there, but many great ones within a mile from it in the locust point area. if it is a nice day, you can bring a picnic lunch and sit in the grass overlooking the Bay. it is a gorgeous view!
3 hours is probably good. the tour is nice, and worth the money. they have a revolutionary war band that plays, on the hour I think. just walking around is nice. again, the views of both the city and the bay are spectacular.

I am a Senior who walks using a cane and cannot walk great distances, even though there are benches for resting. Are there any "vehicles," that would provide a tour? Some sites have "golf carts," employee driven and charge, which I would be very happy to pay for? Thank you.

No, they don't have any scooters, or motorized vehicles. I to have problems getting around. I have taken my power chair there. It gets into most of the places, but it can't get into some parts of the fort.
