Having grown up in the area, I remember Fort Larned when it was a not-very-interesting site outside of town. Coming back for a high school reunion ten years ago, I was happy to be able to show my husband the Fort and let him see a bit of the history and experience the Great Plains. The Fort was somewhat restored,... More

There is a lot of walking here. I mean a lot. No food or restaurants very close. But, if you are close, it is definitely worth the detour. You will be able to see firsthand how soldiers lived. They even have the bronze sculpture s on loan from my home state's gilcrease museum in their visitors center. Call ahead to... More

One of my goals in life is to visit all of the historic plains forts and FT. Larned ranks as one of the best. It is complete in every way, from the well trimmed parade ground to every building being well kept. The visitor's centre is a fountain of information and the Park Rangers are informative and very friendly. Walk... More

We stopped here since we were driving through Kansas. Wow!! We were impressed. This is by far the best restoration we have ever seen. The buildings are original, but the park staff has refurnished and stocked it so that you feel as though you have walked into the fort in the time period. The store and quartermaster areas were fully stocked... We have been to a lot of forts and this was by far the best one we have seen. It is self guided and set up quite nicely. It shows a lot more than just cannons as some forts do. There were soldiers bunks, hospital rooms, doctor's room, family quarters and lots of carved graffiti from the very early 1900s!

I have visited here a few times. The place has a nice set up, historical artifacts, outfits, and a taxidermied buffalo (He is not to be petted.) Sometimes guest speakers come out or a member of the historical society will speak on subjects relevant to Fort Larned and the surrounding area. The place is clean and the staff are friendly.

We stopped to see the fort just because we had extra time when passing through. This place has been very well preserved. They play a short movie telling how and why the fort was built. Very interesting to see how soldiers lived in the 1800's and their families. The best part of all is it is free admission. Should have... More

Well worth a visit. The volunteers were extremely helpful and informative. The displays were well presented. We were lucky enough to be there on Labor Day so we got to see some enactments (such as firing of the canon) that may not be available on other days. You need to allocate at least 3-4 hours to see everything, although you... More

Visited Fort Larned today as we traveled through Kansas. This site will give you a great insight into what it was like for soldiers on the frontier. The park service staff were eager to make our visit fun and educational. I would recommend this stop if you are a history buff. Well presented and thoughtful.

This is a very well-preserved fort and a great place for a history lesson. One of the rangers let us in to the enlisted mens' barracks for a closer look and to try on the heavy wool uniform jackets. The sandstone buildings are covered with the carved names of soldiers and later visitors.
