I was staying in Fort Davis for a "mini" respite when I saw the big "Gallery" banner off the main road and thought I would take a quick look. Well needless to stay, I was in awe of the beauty, articulation, visual processing and thought as well as meaning behind ALL of his photographs. I couldn't help but buy one ( a photo of one of the horses from his trip to Cuba). I was honored to meet Mr. Haspel who has such a vast, wordly experience and enjoyed having a lengthy conversation about his travels and world views. Very refreshing and again, absolutely stunning work and beautiful gallery...a hidden gem. A must visit!!

I enjoy what I do, and don't think it all that special . . . . but it's always nice to to be reminded that there are those that appreciate photography. Thanks for your comments, Robert

My husband and I visited Wild Rose Gallery recently, and were so happy to have the opportunity to visit with Mr. Haspel. He was working in another area of his property, (due to the light traffic caused by COVID measures), but true to the sign on his door, we called him and he opened up his gallery for us! We enjoyed talking to him about his art, and purchased a couple of prints. He has a lot of matted, unframed prints available for purchase, as well as prints that are already framed for you. Great stop on our wild west adventure!

What a treat!! So thankful my husband saw the sign and asked me if I wanted to go. We are celebrating 45 years of marriage and as always on our trips try to find works from local artists. Wild Rose Gallery and owner Robert Haspel fit the bill perfectly. No frills, or junk, just great art from heart of a creative man. Robert spent so much time explaining technique and ideas with us. My husband recently retired and has been learning more about photography, and more specifically his camera, and Mr. Haspel had some great tips. We came away with some really nice prints and a large framed item as well as his book showing a lot of his work. He was working in his shop next door but had a sign with his phone number on it. If you stop and see that sign, don’t hesitate to call, as he’ll be right over in a few minutes. Highlight of our trip out west for sure!

Artist R Haspel has carved a nice niche, offering beautiful framed color photos and gorgeous flower and plant scans for reasonable prices, mostly $500-1000. It was a true treat to meet the loquacious artist and hear him describe the setting and moment for each image, where it was taken, what was happening—each brings unique challenges and opportunities. Although he has electric interests and his imagery includes steam trains, Alaskan rivers and New Zealand waterfalls, much of his work is true to place—he has delivered the goods in capturing some soul shifting images of the Davis Mountains and Big Bend region of Far West Texas. If you come in summer, his gallery is a cool, shady respite from the dry heat, and it may surprise you with its clean interior elegance. Ask for the story of how he transformed the old metal building, or how he and his wife are succeeding with planting beautiful Texas madrone trees right out front—despite his quiet and soft spoken way, Haspel does not skimp on the palaver. :)

Thanks for your post . . . I enjoyed your visit. When visitors open up, it is fun to discuss both my work, and photography in general. I enjoy rambling on about the advantages of digital photography and more importantly the power of post capture processing. Such interaction often helps me see my work in a new way. Having aspects pointed out to me that I had not previously seen or considered, is interesting. I like to ponder . . . To clarify pricing, I have matted work beginning at $35. The most expensive framed piece currently on display is $750. I don't cut corners . . .all work employs conservation materials and framed images use low reflectance "art" glass. Robert Haspel

We weren't sure what to expect behind the Gallery sign but were pleasantly surprised to find a place with photographs with such a range of landscapes! Even better when speaking with the owner/artist I learned a great deal about the area and his style of photography. Definitely a stand out in Fort Davis!
