Devils Den is a rock formation that can be explored by the whole family. Located in the middle of Gettysburg National Military Park below Little Round Top. The rock formation is interesting enough to warrant a 2 hour excursion and is a great place for children to get some energy out.

My husband and I visited here after having seen all the educational things available at the visitor center and doing the bus tour. We elected not to bring our grand children here because they are boisterous boys, and we were pretty sure we could not have stopped them from scrambling amongst the giant boulders! It was very interesting to be on the actual spot of some of the intense fighting, and they do have signage that helps you understand where different combatants were located during this battle. There is some construction here right now, but you can still enjoy the spot and get an idea of what occurred there.

I was saddened to see all the kids tramping all over the site with such disrespect. It seemed as if no one cared actually what happened here. it was like a playground for them. This is not a playground for your kids, teach them the history of what happened here.

Of all the places at Gettysburg, this was one of the most moving. From here, you feel the sound of battle and understand the fear of bullets flying by your head. One of the most famous photos of the Civil War was at this place and is well represented. The Sharpshooter black and white photo, is reproduced on a large info sign. I took a selfie with my hand on the rock above the dead man...157 years later. Little Round Top is right above it along with the Slaughter Pen. Don't leave without meditating on the tremendous loss of life at this one location.

My 3-day trip to Gettysburg included a few stops at Devil's Den. The best was when I parked my car, and then hiked around and behind and in front of Devil's Den. It's hard to appreciate what kind of fighting they had to do there until you've done this. There is an old trolley trail that goes basically from the lot around Devil's Den and back to the Wheatfield, you can really take in a lot of Day 2 by doing that.

One reason for the enormous popularity of the Gettysburg National Military Park is its great variety of physical features. Once having visited GNMP, tourists will never confuse any other battlefield park with Gettysburg. Of all its individul sites, none is more unique than Devil's Den. With its series of enorous boulders and rocks that seem balanced as if to defy gravity, Devil's Den has no competition at any battlefield of which this observer is aware. A word of caution: since visitors are permitted to climb on and among its gigantic components, parents need to heed the actions of their children lest they fall, tumble, or slip between the regular gaps.

This is the BEST spot to take your kids on the Battlefield. Not for the tourist season of 2022 though!! They are closing the area for maintenance and updates. Probably to put up railings so that we don’t need the helicopters back pulling unattended tourist children from the crevices. I hate to think they will be ruining the natural look of this battle site but it inevitable with the accidents. If the kids need to run the sillies out, take them to the Gettysburg Rec park on Long Lane. There is a dog park there as well.

This location really puts things into perspective of the challenges that Union General Buford wanted to preserve by sacrificing his troops to keep the "high ground".
Watch the 1993 movie Gettysburg. Note the conversations that Confederate General Longstreet had with his commander about the Day 2 battles "among the rocks". Then...you can really put it all together when you visit Devils Den!!

As many times as I have been to Gettysburg, this area, as well as the rest of the battlefield still leaves me in awe. To try and imagine what it looked like so many years ago. If you haven't been... do some research on the area, so you have an understanding of what happened there, and go. It is worth every second

It's one thing to read about the history. It's another to stand in the place where it happens. There is no replacement for that. This places gives context into how horrible the slaughter was. Being here makes me never want anyone to experience war. So sad.

This area as well is Little Round Top are very rugged areas. It was no easy task for the men who fought here. Was glad I was able to see this area before the close it down for maintenance. They do a good job of taking care of the park. Because there is a lot of it to take care of.
