    Expensive but good.
Very expensive to eat in the upstairs dining room, but the food was good and so was the service. Make sure to make reservations if you want to eat there. The atmosphere was great as well. I would not go again but am glad I did it once. The onion soup was great…not a lot of onion, but lots of beef. I had this as my entree since I am unable to eat a large meal and I was stuffed! Everyone else has pork, beef and a vegetarian pasta. They enjoyed their dinner as well. The tavern down stairs looked great but the wait is so long, I made reservations ahead of time, for upstairs, since I was warned about this. I think if you go to Gettysburg, and you can, this is something I would recommend for a visit.

    My new favorite restaurant
Fantastic food and atmosphere! You have to try the french onion soup. We walked down the stairs into the dark basement. You felt like it was the late 1700's. Stone walls, candles, servers in period attire. And the food was delicious.

A great spot to experience the past!
This was fun experience for our family trip! Our kids (12 & 14) enjoyed the candlit tables and servers dressed in period clothing, and we all were moved to see an actual hiding spot of the Underground Railroad. We enjoy history and this place didn't disappoint. (It's little expensive, but if you factor in the unique experience that helps!)

3 meals in 2 days and could not be happier!
The Alexander dining room (upper level) of the Dobbin house was the perfect blend of old world charm and top notch food. Our knowledgeable server Rachel, gave expert advise- tailored to our tastes, based on her 10+ years at Dobbin house. We started with a mixed basket of home made breads and rolls, followed by a fresh Caesar salad. I had the Gettystown shrimp- ( basically shrimp stuffed with crab imperial) but it was far from basic. I had to close my eyes and just appreciate each bite to its fullest! My daughter had the William Penn's pork tenderloin that was indeed tender and the raspberry sauce was a great compliment. Her side was the Brussel sprouts, the outer edges had some crisp but the inside remained soft and flavorful. We requested "to-go" containers for part of our main courses just so we would have enough room for dessert! Smart decision! The pecan pie was delicious with a scoup of ice cream on the side. We also ordered a slice of "vanilla caramel crunch cake" that was on special. We ate EVERY crumb of dessert and then had leftovers for a light lunch the next day. I have to add.... that we also had 2 meals from the Dobbin House the day before this fine dining dinner. We stopped in to the tavern on the lower floor the day before (see that review) and when we learned of the eminent snow storm we ordered dinner to go before heading to our B&B. For that dinner we ordered an open faced Ruben, a grilled salmon salad and entire loaf of the date nut bread!

    Hoped for more.
Awesome building. Amazing history. Cool atmosphere. Tremendous service. Rum Belly drink was delish. French onion soup was phenomenal. $37 prime rib left me disappointed—overcooked, ok flavor, barely warm by the time our party of 14 was served. Another guy in our party raved about it, so maybe it was just me. I expected better. Caesar salad was a $4 upgrade. Cool experience overall, just wish I would have felt better about my $60 meal.

    Unique place to eat
The Tavern at the Dobbin house is one of my must eat places when I visit Gettysburg. Going down in the cool candlelit tavern is so unique. The staff is dressed in period clothing and is very attentive. This was my first time eating at the bar and it was nice to sit and chat with the bartender. The food is always good and I make sure I leave room for desert.

Three of us couples were visiting the Gettysburg area and it was recommended that we stop by this historic tavern for a great dining experience. Though we had to wait 30 minutes for a table, it was worth the wait! We eventually were seated in the downstairs dining room where you feel transported to the colonial era of the late 18th century. It was a darkened room with low lighting & candles and servers were dressed in colonial outfits. The menu provided a variety of choices and the pricing was reasonable. A few of us got the roasted chicken which was very tender and delicious. My wife ordered the blue cheese burger. Following our meal, we made our way to the museum portion of the Inn where you can ascend a steep set of wood stairs to see a hiding place used for former slaves that made their way north as well as a collection of period artifacts.

    Great experience.
We stopped in for a drink and appetizer and headed downstairs to the bar area. It was such a nice surprise! We loved the colonial atmosphere. Really LOVED our fun bartender, Linda - funny, warm, friendly and welcoming! The roast beef sandwich was fantastic!

What an incredibly historic building in Gettysburg that really has nothing to do with Gettysburg or the civil war in general.

Being the HUGE U.S. history buff that I am, this place was a must visit for me literally for the fact that it was built in 1776, and I must say that I was not disappointed! While my wife and I did eat lunch here, I was more excited about the building and historic downstairs tavern area than I was with the food, which itself was just fine.

The architecture of the building’s exterior is beautiful, as is the downstairs tavern restaurant with its dark stone walls and candlelit ambiance.

Keep in mind, the tavern is not a huge room so there may be a bit of a wait before you’re seated. (5/2018)

We ate here twice in one weekend, once for dinner and once for lunch. Both meals were excellent. The beef and seafood was delicious, but our favorite part was the breads and the french onion soup. It is nice to see the restaurant has not become complacent like it seems some places have; their distancing/cleaning practices are still abundantly evident. We felt very safe eating there. We will definitely return on our next trip to Gettysburg.

The history of the house is very interesting, dating back to late 1700's. This was also a stop on the Underground Railroad.
It was suggested that we book a reservation in the Upstairs Dining Room which went very well although the prices were high and the fool slightly above average. Our waitperson's attire was era appropriate but looked like it hadn't been washed and cleaned recently. The Downstairs dining was more tavern like and accommodated bus loads of people. This made us very happy to have an Upstairs reservation. Nice to do once but we would never go back there.

I was a 3 day guest of one of the rooms during their off season . It may provide a somewhat unique perspective. The history and atmosphere of the House and Tavern is spectacular as is the food.

The museum accessible from the Tavern tells an amazing story .. Of course the House, and National Battlefield is usually busy on the weekends, there maybe a small wait. The quest room, Steinwehr, was a beautifully done in a 19th Century appearance with a large and modern bathroom area. Breakfast , with fireplace lit was offered in the original dining area. Very welcoming. A weekday usually provides a very relaxing atmosphere.

The Dobbin House is one of my favorite places to eat in Gettysburg. I get such a strong sense of the history of the building when I’m there. The food is always good even though during tourist season there can be a wait. The staff is always very gracious about letting you look through the building which is where you really get a sense of its history. If you haven’t been yet be sure to add this to your itinerary on your next visit to Gettysburg.

After hearing about Dobbin House for years, we finally made it a point to stop and I’m so glad we did! We opted for the tavern which is downstairs as we didn’t need reservations. First let me say that the ambiance cannot be beat! Once you get past the historic value of the venue, the candle-lit tables add just the right touch. The tables are tight together, but strategically placed so that it doesn’t feel like you’re eating with strangers. My daughter chose the open-faced Reuben and she claims it comes only second to mine (which she has to say because I’m her mom ;) My girl is a Reuben connoisseur and has ordered them at multiple restaurants so her praise speaks volumes. I ordered the French onion soup despite the fact it was so hot outside and I’m so happy I did. Truly the best I’ve ever had and I’m tempted to drive back to Gettysburg just to have another bowl. I did glance around at what other people had ordered and already have a list of other things I would like to try because it all looked amazing! I honestly believe you can’t go wrong with anything you order here!

First of all, the ambience is amazing. The history of the building is fantastic and the efforts that have gone into it being authentic to its late 18th century origins are stunning. We had 5 people eating and no one was disappointed. The onion soup was especially yummy. This is the oldest home in Gettysburg and also you’re able to see the hiding place used to hide slaves on the Underground Railroad! Recommend this one highly!
