About
PrivateGroup Tours of Chinatown. As a former food writer, Jamie has aimed her quill-and her palate-at Philly's ethnic food scene, scouting out the most authentic foods from various culinary traditions. As a long-time consumer and curator of Chinese food, her passion has led her to explore the Chinese cuisine in Philadelphia, New York, and even China. Within a three-block radius of Philadelphia's Chinatown, you can find an array of foods that originated in various far-flung regions of China. Follow Jamie around the neighborhood as we savor the flavors of Philadelphia's Chinatown, snacking on things like garlic wontons, chopped-to-order roast duck, and green tea bubble waffles. Tours last approximately 90 minutes and we will make about 5 different stops. All food is included in the price of tour. Even monster appetites won't leave hungry. A Chinese market tour is optional at the end of our trip.

I live outside of Philly just 30 min and do come down in the city frequently to go out. However, I always forget about Chinatown! Also, since I don't know enough about the area I tend to skip over it. I was brainstorming for my 30th to do something different with my family and friends and stumbled upon this food tour and was soooo gooood. Jamie was a great tour guide and showed us all the best places to go to and even familiarized us with some food items so next time we order Chinese we know what to order. She also provided some history about the area as well which was interesting to hear.

On a cold Sunday morning in November, 8 people stood beneath the Chinatown Gate (the Gate is the first authentic Chinese Gate built in America by artisans from China) in Philadelphia PA. There they were met by an expert food tour guide (Jamie Shanker) who guided them through a culinary adventure through the Chinese restaurants of the city. For the next 2 1/2 hours, these 8 people walked from restaurant to restaurant (and at the end, an authentic Chinese Market) and were treated to samplings of the most delicious Chinese cuisine that they would NEVER find on their own. Jamie's knowledge of what delicacies were offered by which restaurants was truly astounding. Her expertise was born out of years of researching (aka eating) at all the restaurants in Chinatown, and selecting the very best from within a 5 block radius. It was amazing, and I could not recommend it more. The price includes all the food that is tasted (and believe me, you will NOT go away hungry after the tour) and Jamie's expert advice and information on all that you are sampling along with cultural tidbits about Chinatown itself. This is a MUST for anyone visiting Philadelphia and having a couple of hours at lunchtime to spend eating very fine Chinese food. But if you go in the fall or winter, bundle up!!

I've lived In Philly for 5 years and wanted to learn more about Chinatown and it's food in a fun way without feeling like a tourist. Jamie was our guide and she was amazing. We had newcomers and Philly veterans on the tour and Jamie made it perfect for all of us. I highly recommend Jamie and this food tour.

WOW, this was an amazing night! After taking food tours all over the country, who would've guessed that the best one is right in my own backyard! Jamie led our group of 5 around Philly's Chinatown to restaurants big and small, showing us the hidden gems you'd never had known even existed. My guests from out of town were spellbound with all the bites Jamie tailored for us tour based on their dietary restrictions. She introduced us to local owners and pointed out other options that we passed, each time recommending certain menu options while also advising us on items to avoid. At each stop, Jamie shared the cultural background of what we were eating while mixing in stories and pictures of her own travels to these regions. Afterwards, Jamie sent us a recap of the places we went as well as each of the dishes she showed us so we could easily go back for our favorites.

Whether you're a native Philadelphian or a tourist to the town, I HIGHLY recommend Jamie's food tour as an unforgettable and truly unique experience!

Had my friends come into town for my bachelor party and wanted to do something different and fun, and a friend suggested this. So glad we checked it out! Jamie knows so much about Chinatown and all the great little spots to hit and showed us all these new foods that I had never tried before but now will be staples of any trip to Chinatown. Almost all the places were BYOB so that was a huge plus. Plus Jamie is really cute so my buddies really enjoyed that too! Would definitely go again.

Even for a group of Philadelphia natives, this was a walk to remember. An insider look into the delicious underbelly of Philadelphia's Chinatown. The food you'll eat over the course of this short distance-wise, but stomach-bustingly long, food tour is well worth the price of admission. But it's much more than just a food tour, Jamie intersperses her impressive food knowledge with tips and tricks on how to do Chinatown right (pork from the duck house?), personal favorites gleaned from a lifetime of eating amazing food from around the globe, and tidbits of Philadelphia history, culture, and life. This is an event you don't want to miss. You'll never look at the salt fried squid the same.

Pro-tip: it's BYOB if you want it to be.

Really awesome time! I live here in Philly and saw things I walk past everyday and had no idea how delicious they were! Jamie really is really an expert at what she does. Totally flexible with the tour as well, would highly recommend it.

I had a few friends in from out of town, and we were looking for a unique experience to get into. I am a long time lover of various Asian cuisines, so when Jamie's name popped up, it seemed the perfect fit. She is incredibly knowledgable about many different types of places in Chinatown, and regional differences in cuisine as well. She has traveled to China, and experienced truly authentic expressions of their food, and that really helped to illustrate the different aspects of our tour here. I would absolutely go again, and definitely recommend to anyone looking for a great experience.

We had a great experience with Jamie last Saturday on our food eating tour of Chinatown, Pa. Our family of 5 - 2 adults, 1 College and 2 HS aged children really enjoyed the sites and sounds of Chinatown with Jamie. We visited 5-6 different restaurants - eating and exploring different foods at each place. Some of our favorite stops included restaurants that served Szeschuan snow pea leaves in garlic, pickled cucumber, taro root cake and our dessert to share - aoreo pull apart waffle - on our way to the Chinese Market. Jamie was very knowledgeable and shared with us the origins and cultural customs associated with each food. The 3 hour tour was reasonably priced and we left pleasantly satisfied with the food and Jamie! You have to give this experience a try!
