Mannequin is one of my favorite movies and I felt like I was in the middle of the set! What a beautiful landmark! Wish I could have heard some music from the organ, but it looked gorgeous!

Very haphazard shop with a lack of staff. The perfume hall was deserted - late Thursday afternoon- and nobody to assist if we had wanted to buy something. Lovely building though with organ music.

We went there on a Saturday at 6:30 pm – 2.5 hours before closing. Despite it‘s impressive architecture the store is like a ghost town. We started in the Levi‘s department: that was a mess - all shelves looked like a rummage table. Jeans all over the place and on the floors. Then we realized that there was not a single sales assistant in the whole department, even on the whole first floor. The only employee was at one open cashier serving the complete first floor. No agents at the shop-in-shops. Ralph Lauren‘s merchandise was all threaded and locked up. You could not take anything to the cashier. One escalator was out of order – and when we visited the restrooms we found homeless sitting there and no toilet paper at all. Something is completely wrong with that Macy‘s. Not even security at the doors. Maybe all employees had a day off but they forgot to reduce opening hours. The cashier (reallly the only staff on this complete huge floorspace) was extremely stressed. Every payment procedure took 3-5 minutes – and credit card terminals did work neither. We felt like being in a Hidden Camera feature. Well, the time of the department stores seems definitely to be over…

While Macy's New York needs a paint and a dust this store needs closed down!

Even BHS was better than this and they shut down!

Homeless People getting washed in the store toliets isn't the best picture to paint tourists visiting the City!

We came to see and hear the organ. The organ is impressive to look at. However, there was no concert, and no information that it wouldn't be. We had looked online before coming, there was no event scheduled to prevent it, and the schedule showing a 5:30 show was listed. In the store was a sign also showing the 5:30 time. We were there from 5:20 to 5:45 and there was definitely no show. There was no sign or anything indicating why or when it would resume again. So that was disappointing, it was the sole reason we came.

Don’t bother trying to reach someone there on the phone. An awful “push button” runaround. Eventually I did reach someone with whom I had a tough time communicating. I had a simple question and even that she was unable to answer.

A visit to Macy's for holiday shopping is the shared experience of many Americans. The Philadelphia store has a grandeur and opulence comparable to the Herald Square flagship. The Christmas lighting show is a must. Bargains are available at the second floor.

We visited this store twice while on a short vacation in Philadelphia. A famous brand, a famous store, so expectations were high.
Visually, the store is impressive, situated in an ornate open space, which inspires confidence. The quality of the merchandise is generally good.

So what’s the problem?

Answer: the staff. Rude, inattentive and reluctant to provide any assistance, to the point where they actually refuse to serve you - it is quite extraordinary.

We visited twice. On the first occasion, my wife attempted to buy some shoes, approaching a trio of shop assistants in that department. This was obviously the first mistake – they were highly reluctant to cease their own private conversation and she was generally ignored. OK, not great but these things happen.

On a second visit, we managed to find a couple of items that we wished to purchase. no help or assistance offered whatsoever but we queued up behind a lady at the counter, ready to pay. When we got there, the person at the till took one look at us and told us to go to another till. On arriving at this till, we were told to go to yet another till. Eventually, at third time ‘lucky’, someone deigned to serve us. Curiously, however, although the customer in front of us was told that they did not need to pay for a carrier bag, we were informed that we had to pay if we wanted one!

At this point, I asked to speak to the manager. As with so many poorly run businesses, managers are nowhere to be seen. But we hung around, and eventually someone appeared. He was clearly very embarrassed and trotted out various platitudes.

An astonishing experience. There are so many wonderful stores in Philadelphia, run well and which take such a pride in their customer service, which is much appreciated. In our experience, Macy’s is clearly trading on former glories and seems to be adopting an attitude, which is not being challenged, of judging people by their appearance when deciding how and even whether to serve them. What do I mean by ‘by their appearance’? Possibly best say no more - nasty.

What I loved about Macy's in Philadelphia was the fact that the store has so much history and houses two Philadelphia tourist attractions... The huge Wanamaker pipe organ and the Grand Court Eagle Statue which dates back to 1904 and is famed for the "Meet me at the Eagle" phrase. I was there at Christmas and the decorations at the organ were fabulous. There is plenty to buy here too if looking for a gift. Well worth a visit and do pay the Eagle a visit.

Don't miss Macy's downtown, the old Wanamaker's Store. This is where the movie "Mannequin" was shot both in the front of the store and in the atrium. The building is so beautiful and elegant but is not all used.

The merchandise is nice but not the same as Wanamaker's once was in its heyday. It is still nice to shop here and there is a decent selection for the downtown customer.

Still don't miss the afternoon organ show as it is very nice and at Christmas time all the traditions come back with the light show and the displays.
