I went on the Independence Mall tour with Joseph Spurlock. He was very witty and informative and gave a great overview of the revolution, including the role of slavery and slave owners that may be glossed over in other tours. I’d really recommend.

This was very interesting thanks to our guide Joseph, who obviously was a qualified historian. I was here on business at a conference and made the right decision to take this tour, you get some walking in, but certainly not so much walking as to...More

I agree that small kids will be bored. As far as the distance and the speed, children should not have a problem keeping up.

As others stated, it's free, with the option to tip. Unless you hated it and quit before the end, you should tip the guide. My suggestion would be at least $10/person, up to $40 or so.
