We took a walking tour of center city murals. Our guide, Al, was fantastic. He showed us many murals, interesting buildings, tiny residential streets, and imparted a lot of info. This exceeded my expectations.

If you walk up to the first mural (7th and Chestnut) there is a URL for the map of the tour and there is even a cell phone audio tour if you want some explanations of the murals.
We (me and boyfriend) started around 6pm so we didn't do the cell phone portion because it was getting dark. But it was fun! We are both from the area and are in the city every day but we've never taken the tour so it was interesting to actually take the time to stop and review the murals instead of walking by them. Plus on South Street you get all the random murals from the artist who made the Magic Gardens as well, which is always fun.
** Recommendation: start backwards at 6th and South Street at the WEB DuBois one because you can grab ice cream from Big Gay Ice Cream at Broad and South Streets on your way there and then spend the walking tour walking that off. Little difficult to follow the directions to the murals, but we only had issues finding one of them going backwards (second to last one, walked right past it!) **

We recommend the Mural Arts Program's tours! The trolley tour of murals outside Philly's city center took us to authentic neighborhoods to see beautiful murals. Well organized urban adventure that gave us insights into Philly's history and culture. Rich is excellent tour guide.
The "Love Letters" mural tour via elevated train gave us insights into the transformative power of murals adding warmth, humor and creativity to local communities and the transit system. Elena, our top-notch tour guide, gave us plenty of time to view murals from train platforms. Fun and easy adventure.

The mural arts tour was educational in that you learn a lot about how the murals are made and came to be. What you do not see is a whole lot of murals. In the course of the 90 minute tour, we saw maybe 8-10 murals at most, out of the 4000 or so that exist in the city. But perhaps a trolley tour would show you many more murals than you can see in a walking tour. One thing for sure...the murals are amazing, and you can see lots of them just by walking around on your own. They are everywhere.

There is no better way to understand a city than to visit its neighbourhoods. And to see art in a neighbourhood guided by someone who loves both, it is a priceless experience!

We were escorted on a wonderful 2 hour walking tour of a number of the murals in Philadelphia. The weather helped immensely - I wouldn't want to do this in the pouring rain. The guide was knowledgeable and engaged the group as much as possible.
The tour also took us past many magnificent buildings in Philadelphia (e.g. City Hall) which was an added bonus. Great architecture.
There are tours that take you to see different murals. As I was there on business I did not have the time to take any of the other mural tours.

My husband and I just moved to Philadelphia in 2014 and spend lots of time on weekends doing local tours. We did the South tour in the fall of 2014 and the North tour in spring of 2015. The experience of this tour depends heavily on the guide/speaker for the tour. The groups were small, 10-15 per tour which makes it easier to hear. Wear comfortable walking shoes. We enjoyed both tours and saw many amazing murals. We both prefered the South tour, because the guide was more entertaining and it felt like we saw more murals.

My family and I took one of the walking tours of murals surrounding the City Hall area. The murals we viewed (14) were just stunning and often hidden in plain view. A knowledgeable guide provided interesting info about the artists and the techniques used to create the artwork. This was just a small sampling of the over 3900 murals in the city. Other tours offer train and trolley excursions as well. A must see...

Did you know that this non-profit has funded over 3000 outdoor murals in the city? You see them everywhere; they're kind of a Philly hallmark at this point, raising social and cultural issues in a neighborhood context. I took a 2-hour trolley tour that showed us about 20 or so, with an informed and personable narration explaining the background of each one, who the artist was, and how they worked with the community to co-design and create the mural. Definitely a great way to spend a weekend morning! You can take walking tours yourself, of course, but please find a way to donate to this worthy cause.

Philadelphia is known for its murals and we decided to go on the masterpiece tour. We were very excited but the tour definitely did not meet up with the most basic of expectations.
The tour took place in a trolley that was noisy and uncomfortable. This could have been something we could put up with except that the windows were so bad that they made looking at the murals difficult. When the windows were down the trolley became very hot and the glass was of an older type that was not entirely even. Opening the window created a darkened effect that miscoloured the outside world and making the murals seem less than they really were. The windows were so low that only a small child could look out.
The guide began by asking us not to speak while she was speaking as the noise in the trolley made hearing difficult. Fine. Then she proceeded in talking non stop for almost the whole tour. Just weird.
The guide was very pleased with the organization and the "real" murals which she called their murals - and I have no problem with this. But she was also very negative about any other kinds of street art (legal or not). This made the tour less about art and more about a propaganda tour for the murals program. Not ok if we were paying for a murals tour. She talked about murals as we passed them going much to fast to see anything and only stopped at a very small number of walls.
All in all a very disappointing affair. My tip is to buy a book and take the tour yourself if you are a group of four you could probably rent your own car and driver to do the tour and stop where you want.

Ou on stationne pour commencer le tour à pied si on le fait par nous-mêmes (j'ai un pick-up)? Ou trouver la bonne map pour voir ce qui vaut le plus la peine ? Merci à l'avance pour vos réponses

How long is the trolley tour
Where does it go? In the city and outside the city?
Where do I pick it up?
Can I buy tickets ahead of time?
What is the senior rate? How many people = a group rate? We will be 8.
Will we be guaranteed to all be on the same trolley?
Is there secure parking near where we get onboard?

Org.
