Christ Church Burial Ground is the final resting place of many notables of Philadelphia and early America. Worth mention are graves of five signers of the Declaration of Independence. Leave a penny on the grave of Benjamin Franklin, and see the markers of military heroes, congressmen, mayors and other famous and less famous people...such as a long time grave digger. The fee is nominal $3. for adults or $8. with tour, and well worth the cost to leisurely visit history from 1719 through to the present. We had a group ranging in age to elementary age children through retirees. Enjoyed by all.

This was one of the most interesting and fascinating tours I’ve taken in Philadelphia. A modest $5 fee gets you into the famous Christ Church cemetery, the final resting place of many notable early American citizens. You may buy a map that details some of the famous people here, but for another $5, resident cemetery historian Bob will lead you on a tour and explain in great detail who is buried where, what role they played in our history. Bob was an amazing wealth of colonial time American history , as he talked about the thousands of people buried in the cemetery. He explained how the expression “debunked” came to be, and why there are 100s of pennies on Benjamin Franklin’s tomb, and the origin of our colonial flag. Betsy Ross? Nope.
Bob made the tour fun, interesting and was very respectful of all the great leaders who contributed to the birth of our nation, and those who served her up until the present. This is a little known attraction one should definitely see! Thanks Bob!

Enjoyed this tour of famous Americans life and death (mostly Revolutionary War era). Five signers of the Declaration of Independence are buried here. Lasted between an hour to hour and a half. Everything is inside the cemetery so not much walking, though you have to be able to stand the entire tour.
The guide was not only knowledgeable but also very funny and friendly. He answered groups questions as well.
I would recommend this tour as an insight into history of the city and the nation.

We were glad we got tickets to go to the burial grounds while at Christ Church, there is an additional fee for the burial grounds entry. It is a bit of a hike to the burial grounds from the church with not very good directions. But the entry is marked. We showed our ticket when we entered.
As others have stated many of the stones are worn to the point where they can't be read but others have markers. Some had flags to draw your attention.
There are a few benches in the cemetery.
Many famous historic figures buried here. After touring I checked out names on the internet to learn more about them.
Of course, the big draw is Benjamin Franklin, his wife and son. Bring a penny to leave there. "A penny saved is two pence clear,” Benjamin Franklin
Well worth the fee to look around and remember those who did so much for the establishment of our country.

Extremely informative and interesting tour- we received a lot of information and facts that we would have never gotten otherwise from a guide (Bob) that has worked there for many years.
Bob was extremely engaging and had lots of excellent stories about the cemetery and the many important Americans that are buried in it. An awesome overall experience and one of the coolest parts of our Philadelphia

Had a great visit at the Christ Church Cemetery today with tour guide Bob. He was very funny, informative, and an all-around great guy. Also want to note it was very safe with social distancing and face masks required.

Christ Church Burial Ground was a fascinating stop during our time in Philadelphia. The history here is incredible, especially if you're into exploring old tombstones. While Benjamin Franklin’s headstone is a major draw, other notable figures like signer of the Declaration of Independence, Benjamin Rush, and Commodore William Bainbridge, a hero of the War of 1812, are also buried here. The cemetery wasn't too crowded, allowing us to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere at our own pace. It’s a great spot to spend 30 to 60 minutes and appreciate the rich American history it holds. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

During certain months of the year the Burial Ground hosts a special themed tour on Fridays. My GF and I were lucky enough to catch the Death and Taxes tour, which focused on the friends of Benjamin Franklin. Bob, our host, was fantastic! We learned so much as we walked amongst the tombstones! We will absolutely be back! Can't recommend it enough!

I did the Death and Taxes tour with Bob as the tour guide. It was great! Bob was very nice and very knowledgeable. The tour was fun and informative. I learned a lot about Benjamin Franklin and about several of his friends who are also buried in the cemetery.

I had an amazing time there taking a tour with Bob! It was very informative, and he was such a funny and friendly person. The tour was definitely worth it.
The cemetery itself was also very beautiful and interesting, with five signers of the declaration, as well as several other important members of the revolution. I was excited to see the grave of Benjamin Rush, because I'm really interested in medical history, as well as the revolution.

Why is there an admission fee to go inside the Burial Ground?
Written April 20, 2017
Christ Church Burial Ground is a nonprofit historic site. Your small admission fee ($2 for adults and $1 for children) goes towards the upkeep of the grounds, the preservation of the gravestones, and keeping a staff of tour guides on-site 7 days a week to share the stories behind the famous Americans buried here!

Is Christ Church Burial Ground open during preservation work on the Franklin gravesite?
Written April 20, 2017
Yes. The Burial Ground is open during its normal tourism hours (10:00-4:00) each day (12:00-4:00 on Sunday). Visitors will not have full access to the Franklin gravesite until the preservation is completed, but they can look inside the work area and see our preservation team at work. Our guides are on staff to explain the entire preservation process.
