Many visitors to Philadelphia want to know how to experience the “real” city beyond the standard tourist attractions. As a resident, one of my top suggestions is always Reading Terminal Market and probably the best way to experience it is by taking the Taste of Philly Food tour. Food is something that binds us all and tells the unique story of a place and that is certainly true in Philadelphia. The Reading Terminal Market gives a great snapshot of our food scene, not to mentiona great place to experience Philadelphia’s diversity. However, the Market can seem large and chaotic with overwhelming choices. Taste of Philly’s Carolyn Wyman is knowledgeable not just about the food choices in the market but about its rich history as well.   The tour is a bargain at $16.95 and includes samples of both savory and sweet foods.  It is not meant to take the place of a full meal, but rather give a tease of local specialties and perhaps give some ideas for place where you might have breakfast/lunch or take away some treats for later.  Carolyn is very familiar with all the vendors and can make suggestions for your tastes, along with a list of a large variety of places to eat throughout the city too. Also having a knowledgeable guide point out RTM's unique architectural details as well as telling the personal stories of the vendors adds a great deal of human interest to the experience.   This tour ran an hour and 15 minutes and I'd strongly recommend it.

As foodie history buffs, this was a great tour with good history and sampling’s of the local fare. Carolyn was knowledgeable and made it fun. Highly recommended

We've visited the Reading Terminal Market as tourists a handful of times over the years and have walked among the crowds and eaten at DiNic's -- but this time we discovered the Taste of Philly Food Tour and decided to sign up. We were glad we did. Carolyn is very knowledgable about not only the history of the market but also about the almost hidden points of character that go unnoticed -- and yet are an immutable ethos of the market itself. We weren't expecting an all you can eat sampling from each vendor at the market -- the price was too reasonable to expect that -- however, we did sample a nice cross section of uniquely Philadelphian fare such as snapper soup (the turtle), fresh (still hot!) soft pretzels prepared by Amish women, Bassett's butterscotch vanilla ice-cream -- and in what was the food highlight of the day -- we sampled for the first time -- a cake we had never even heard of -- butter cake. This last point is worth reiterating as it sums up why the tour was both fun and educational for us: we have visited the market as tourists in the past, we have lived in the Philadelphia area all our lives -- and yet we had never heard of butter cake, much less having tried it. And if it weren't for the Taste of Philly Food Tour and Carolyn providing us a sample -- we would have walked right past it -- poorer for having missed it. I do recommend the tour to anyone visiting the Reading Terminal Market for the first time -- you will have a richer experience and you will learn something unexpected.

Our tour was a “full tour” combine that with the bustling of the terminal and it was near impossible to hear our guide. Therefore the tour was a waste of money. It was more of a history of the market and Philadelphia and not a “food tour”. Or maybe it was more about food and I just couldn’t hear it.
