Gorgeous

The trail to Crystal Lake is a bit of a challenge, but worth it. The best part is the overlooks along the way of Lake George and Lake Mary. Beautiful!

Beautiful views, moderately challenging hike

Great hike, beautiful views. I highly recommend this, but do bring water and a sun hat because it can get hot as you hike further up the trail.

Day hike during our stay in the Mammoth Lakes area
Sep 2019
Our lodging agent recommended we take this hike and we were not disappointed. It was not easy or hard, I would say moderate. Beautiful scenic vistas along the route with plenty of shaded woodlands to help keep things cool. Trails were well marked and not overly busy during our visit, which began around 10 AM on a weekday in early SEP. Hike to the Lake is about an hour. Another hike option is available from here that goes another hour up to a peak offering views of the entire area. Safe and secure parking at the trailhead. A must visit in the beautiful Lakes Basin area.

An Easy-Medium Difficulty Trail with an Outstanding Destination (see pics)
Jul 2019
Less than a mile from the parking lot (which can fill up really early, so plan an early start!), the Crystal Lake Trail is a 0.9m hike that takes you to Crystal Lake. On the way, you have some great views of the Lake Mary and the surrounding basin. For me, however, the prize is Crystal Lake.

One of the many high-altitude lakes in the area, Crystal Lake is backdropped by the Sierra Crest. There in late-July, there was still snow at higher elevations along the trail, as well as on the crest. The perspective of the crest, lake, landscape and flora is spectacular.

The parking area can fill early, so plan an early start. A backpack with snacks and water or hydration pouch is a smart idea. With children? Plan a picnic.

I'll be back in Mammoth in a week and will return to Crystal Lake.

too crowded !

Maybe we visited on a sunday, but compared with (the many) surrounding lakes : too crowded to our opinion. We like it more quiet.
Lots of cars, boats and people fishing.

An easy hike with good views of the Lakes Basin
Aug 2018 • Family
The Crystal Lake Trail is a nice hike for folks that are not acclimated to 8,000 feet and includes views of the Lakes Basin, Crystal Crag and Crystal Lake. The hike is about 3 miles round trip and I’ve done it with my granddaughter when she was 5 years old (and I didn’t carry her). The best time to hike this trail is during the early morning hours as the parking at Lake George can be quite busy, especially on the weekends. Several folks on the trail take their dogs but I’ve never had an issue with any of them. There’s also a Host at Lake George who can answer any questions. This trail will also take you to a junction where you can hike up to Mammoth Crest. The Crest is still snow covered now, so I wouldn’t recommend it.
The trail to Crystal Lake will also have snow in the shade, but it should be passable. I do recommend hiking or ski poles because of the snow. The other alternative would be to wait until July when the trail should be free of snow.

Trail head for late spring early summer skiing when the Mammoth Mountain ski lifts have closed for the season
Jun 2018
We usually hike to Crystal Lake in the late summer. However, once we did hike there in the late spring early summer. On the trail we met skiers who had hiked up from Crystal Lake to higher elevations to ski!

Beautiful trail
Nov 2018 • Friends
Beautiful trail for a short hike, well this is relative because I usually hike 15-20 miles a day, but this is very scenic. At the time that we went, Crystal Lake was frozen which made it even more interesting. We also went up to the Mammoth Crest, isolated trail and worth the view.

Worth doing the Hike
Nov 2018 • Family
Around 2.6 miles round trip. Moderate and steep. The view once you reach is awesome. Plus in winter water covered with ice made it beautiful. While hiking you can see some great views of Lake George and others. Only problem was the Trial path. It was confusing in couple of places. You have be careful to find and follow the path
