The trail to Crystal Lake is a bit of a challenge, but worth it. The best part is the overlooks along the way of Lake George and Lake Mary. Beautiful!

Great hike, beautiful views. I highly recommend this, but do bring water and a sun hat because it can get hot as you hike further up the trail.

Our lodging agent recommended we take this hike and we were not disappointed. It was not easy or hard, I would say moderate. Beautiful scenic vistas along the route with plenty of shaded woodlands to help keep things cool. Trails were well marked and not overly busy during our visit, which began around 10 AM on a weekday in early SEP. Hike to the Lake is about an hour. Another hike option is available from here that goes another hour up to a peak offering views of the entire area. Safe and secure parking at the trailhead. A must visit in the beautiful Lakes Basin area.

Less than a mile from the parking lot (which can fill up really early, so plan an early start!), the Crystal Lake Trail is a 0.9m hike that takes you to Crystal Lake. On the way, you have some great views of the Lake Mary and the surrounding basin. For me, however, the prize is Crystal Lake. One of the many high-altitude lakes in the area, Crystal Lake is backdropped by the Sierra Crest. There in late-July, there was still snow at higher elevations along the trail, as well as on the crest. The perspective of the crest, lake, landscape and flora is spectacular. The parking area can fill early, so plan an early start. A backpack with snacks and water or hydration pouch is a smart idea. With children? Plan a picnic. I'll be back in Mammoth in a week and will return to Crystal Lake.

Maybe we visited on a sunday, but compared with (the many) surrounding lakes : too crowded to our opinion. We like it more quiet. Lots of cars, boats and people fishing.
