Full Moon Snowshoe Tour
Feb 2020
Awesome experience. We were lucky enough to be up at Mammoth during a full moon and booked this snowshoe tour. Our guides were lovely and very informative. There were about 20-25 people total on the tour. Included the snowshoes and hot beverages and dessert afterwards. The tour was about 90 minutes long hiking through the woods and amazing views of the mountain and sky. Definitely recommend.

Basic snowshoeing orientation tour
Feb 2020
Tamarack advertises a free 90-minute naturalist led snowshoe tour at 10:30am each Saturday. You can bring your own gear or rent theirs for ~$35 then use it for the rest of the day. This seems like a great deal. However, they don't really make much effort to ensure that you've put on the gear correctly or are using it efficiently. The tour itself is barely an hour and consists of a commentary about the Tamarack enclave, pointing out distinctions between a few local conifer species and a brief visual tour of the Mammoth Crest and Pass with explanation of the geological processes and meteorological results. However, we had a blast trekking around the Twin Lakes area afterwards and sightseeing.

Beautiful trails, good cross country lessons & staff. Unclear info about shuttles/parking
Feb 2020 • Couples
Once we got to the center, all experiences were positive (a little more on that at the end of this post). I’d recommend packing plenty of water/sunglasses/sun screen & snacks.

I had trouble confirming parking and shuttle information, so for anyone trying to figure out logistics: there was more parking than I expected at the ski center. It’s limited but even a race day, there seemed to be availability. If you take the orange shuttle from the village, we parked at the lot (a steep but worthwhile $35 for the day, until 5 pm) since staff at the center couldn’t tell us if there was parking available.

The shuttle picks up on the gondola side of the village - less than a 5 minute walk from the parking lot once we figured out where to go. It’s about a 10 minute ride (runs every 30 minutes, departs the village on the hour and half past the hour and leaves tamarack at :15 and :45 past the hour). tamarack lodge has simple lunch options (chili/wraps/sandwiches).

We come from mild/rainy climates so we opted for a cross country ski lesson as winter sports were (still are) new to us. Good 1.5 hour group lesson from Karyn & good choices of easy/medium/harder trails with “hosts” speckled along the paths to guide adventures. We had a terrific experience with host Robin (I didn’t catch her name) who we encountered on the trials. She was very knowledgeable & friendly. When she noticed I wasn’t feeling well (likely due to altitude, hello 8000 + feet), she didn’t skip a beat to help. I appreciate her attitude tons! The rental equipment was in good shape & they gave us all the equipment we needed to enjoy a day on the trials. Our bodies were well worn after trying to get the gist of cross country.

We enjoyed a quiet and tasty dinner in town at Los Alas.

Great fun!
Jan 2020
My family and I wanted to try cross country skiing so we took a 1-hour private lesson from Ally. She was such a good communicator and teacher that she had us all up and having fun in just one hour. It was great! She was able to identify and articulate what each of us needed to do so that we could be confident and successful. For example, she helped me figure out a rhythm to maximize a glide and she helped my husband (who doesn't ski at all ) to slow down on a hill and manage his equipment so he didn't feel clumsy. The private lesson with Ally was well worth it the expense. She made a tough sport fun and my family definitely wants to continue cross country skiing. Bravo!

What a stunning historic lodge with great restaurant.

We wish we could have snowshoed in this beautiful area but were not equipped or ready for it. Instead we played in the snow and enjoyed a minimal lunch of hot lentil soup at the lodge. Server was very kind to us.

Great Alt to downhill
Mar 2019 • Friends
Weather wasn’t conducive to downhill so we hit the Tamarack instead. What a joy! Starting with the excellent friendly staff helping with routes and equipment and continuing on to the trails that go on forever.
We had great weather, a little windy but as the trails loop around you can escape the wind. Well tracked and marked.
Definitely recommend as a change of pace.

Great Trails, Expensive Dining, Stinky Cabin
Feb 2019 • Family
The trails are groomed but have space for "skating". Very enjoyable trails and staff at the rental. You get discounts on the rentals and ski passes if you are a senior (65) and also if you are staying in the cabins. The cabin was a nice size and layout with a functional kitchen. We enjoyed the fire in the wood stove each night. Unfortunately, there was a sewage smell throughout our stay. Maintenance checked twice without any change. Dinner was adequate, but was expensive. Good dark beer though.

Best cross country in California
Dec 2018 • Friends
This is where I was introduced to cross country skiing many years ago and never looked back. I have my own equipment now, but the rentals are very good and the instructors excellent. Beautiful groomed trails between the frozen lakes. Never overcrowded (well, it is California after all :-). If you want full relax and escape from the crowd - look no further.
Enjoy!

Nice cross country ski and snow shoeing
Dec 2018 • Family
Tamarack ski center is located inside the Tamarack resort. You just drive it all the way to the end. We tried the snow shoeing which was easy and fun. They have separate tracks for cross country skiing and snow shoeing. The paths are regularly groomed. You have very nice view as you track around. We had a good time.

Perfect for a relaxing break from the downhill at Mammoth.
Apr 2018 • Solo
Beautifully managed tracks for skating and traditional cross country. Quiet location amongst trees. Easy to get around to all areas but a hard workout is there if you want it. Nice folks in the ski hire place.
