- alterego3030Bardstown, Kentucky177 contributionsDecent museum and difficult to pinpoint who its forI took my children to the museum and they only likes 2.5 aspects of it, the Manatee's, the Planetarium Space Show and the Lego exhibit. We spent much of our time at the Legos and manatee's. It was fun to build Legos with the kids and look at the towers on display. The planetarium show was nice for my older kid, but boring for my younger (her words, not mine). I thought the local history and the early human artifacts were neat, but with the kids, it was hard to dive in and explore the areas. With the price of admission, you get to come and go as you please for the day, but with the kids we didn't go back after we left. All in all, I don't think I would pay the cost for an adult admission to go through the museum again.Visited December 2022Written January 10, 2023
- Tod AAllison Park, Pennsylvania12 contributionsNice museum with an emphasis on Florida history as well as Manatee rescue.Second visit in 3 years. Nice, clean, well lit museum that can take two or three hours to walk through. Heavy on Florida history and origins. Manatee rescue is part of their mission. While there, no manatees were in residence as they just released three back into the wild. They assume they'll be more manatees in a month or two. Very polite and knowledgeable staff. They were running three different films at different times at their planetarium, well done and informative. Nice place for people of all ages including families and groups.Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 3, 2023
- Ross TPortland, Texas238 contributionsA Gift To HumanateeA very nice museum, and well worth the visit. The only problem we had was finding parking. But after going around and around several times, we eventually located a free parking garage three blocks away. We found the many exhibits interesting and compelling. These included details about Archaic peoples of Florida, a gallery of Indian pottery, jewelry, and shell tools, displays of Pine Uplands and Riverine Ecosystems, and artifacts from early settlers of the area. But, the highlight was the two manatees (Ripkin, & Toby) in the rehabilitation habitat. This was a very enjoyable, educational and enlightening experience. We enjoyed meeting these two guys the most!Visited June 2023Written July 2, 2023
- Taylor BChicago, Illinois8,751 contributionsThe largest museum of natural history on Florida's Gulf CoastThe Bishop Museum of Science and Nature in Bradenton, Florida, which was founded in 1946, is the largest museum of natural history on Florida's Gulf Coast. Located at 201 10th Street West, near the Manatee River, it specializes in the history of Florida's Gulf Coast and houses exhibits highlighting Florida history from the prehistoric to the present. Open from 10 to 5 Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 on Sunday, it includes The Parker Manatee Aquarium, The Planetarium and the Parker Manatee Rehabilitation Habitat, which was the home of Snooty the manatee (1948-2017), the oldest known manatee in the world at the time of his death. The archaeological artifacts collected throughout Florida by Montague Tallant, a Bradenton furniture store owner, established the foundation for the museum. The Spanish Plaza, opened in 1980, emphasizes the area's Spanish heritage with a full-scale replica of Hernando De Soto's home in Barcarrota, Spain, a 16th century chapel and a fountain with a bronze sculpture of De Soto on horseback. Since its completion in 1993, the Parker Manatee Rehabilitation Habitat has been the most popular feature of the museum, having rehabilitated more than 40 manatees. The 60,000-gallon tank was designed to house up to three adult manatees. Like seals, manatees are a popular attraction and no manatee was more popular than Snooty, who died as a result of drowning on July 23, 2017, two days after his 69th birthday. The oldest manatee in captivity, Snooty was one of a select few captive manatees in the United States that was allowed to interact with human handlers, which made him uniquely valuable to manatee research and education.Visited July 2023Written August 16, 2023

This museum charged full price for children when adults get in free. And you have to pay extra to see the planatarium at Bishop Planatarium! Talk about a messed up leadership group. I live here and woll no longer be a donor

On October 22, went with friends to visit museum. There were planetarium shows we wanted to see in addition to displays. Watched one and were going to attend the one following shortly thereafter. In the meantime we walked around and enjoyed displays, manatees, etc. Went back to attend second show. We waited outside theater with a rather large group of other people for quite some time. Finally, a gentleman (same person as one who had conducted earlier planetarium show) came out and told us they were having a board meeting in that room and show would not happen. He apologized and said we should have been told by "staff" it would not happen and to come back another time. We were visiting Florida and so "another time" was not possible. Apology was lame and ridiculous. Why did HE not tell us earlier that it would not happen? We paid to get into the museum and they decide to have a board meeting during planetarium show times? Who made that bright decision? We were very disappointed and doubtful we will go again.

I went here with friends. It right next door to the Hampton Inn where I was staying. We started with the live show at the planetarium. The person giving the show was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He answered many questions. The technology was much more sophisticated than when I last visited a planetarium. We stayed for the next presentation, which was not done live, but interesting. We then walked through the museum that focused on Florida. We finished with the manatees. There were four of them and we learned about them from the live show and the exhibits. This was an interesting museum with a diverse selection of things to see and do.

Good short talk on Manatees. The best part is the two educational showings in the Planetarium. The planetarium theater is great, comfortable (the seats recline so you can relax and view the overhead show) and the two different shows we attended where excellent. They also have an app you can download and use to add to your experience at the Bishop Museum Of Science And Nature.

It's a lovely museum with a plantetarium show (included in admission) and live adolescent manatees. Lots of interesting displays, clocks, shells, American Indian panaromas, and a science room. I'd give it 5 stars but it's adimission charges are a bit pricey for such a small museum

Nice little museum with a great under water viewing of manatees. Interesting to see the history of the area from prehistoric to more modern times. Only down side is that the tickets are quite expensive given the size of the museum. Even given the price I still recommend giving this place a chance as even though fairly small there is a lot to see and good for a 2 to 3 hours.

The museum covers the history of this part of Florida from tens of millions of years ago to recent times. There are excellent and realsitic life-size reconstructions of natural and human environments, from mangrove swamps to Native American hunting scenes. The displays are mostly clear and beautifully done, and as a geologist I appreciated the extensive displays of fossils and description of the geological history. The palaeogeographical maps, showing when Florida was larger, smaller or completely submerged as sea level rose and fell in the geological past are a great idea, but the colour scheme chosen makes them difficult to understand. We particularly enjoyed watching the rehab manatees, who were pretty active, and can be seen both from above and under water. As dinosaur enthusiasts we also enjoyed the outdoor 'living dinosaurs' temporary exhibit. The museum is located close to the waterfront and river walk, and this is a pleasant, spacious part of town to walk around and find lunch. There is 3 hour parking outside the museum.

Outstanding museum. Even though it isn't huge you can easily spend a whole day there. If you enjoy reading different things about the exhibits you will need the whole day. A lot of reading but many visuals as well. Very nice set up. Looks like a Spanish court yard. Two floors. 1st is prehistoric FL and an exhibit that changes every so often. The 2nd is more modern FL. Very neat and clean and well set up. A lot of information in a museum of this size. Plenty of clean rest rooms. No food here but you can find plenty of restaurants on 12th St. a short walk away. (Check out Robin’s for great food at a very reasonable price). Your admission is for the day and you can return later. There is also the Manatee viewing area. Downstairs you can watch the manatees swim and eat, and eat, and eat. These are rescued manatees that come here as their final stop to gain weight before being released into the wild. They have a person there to answer questions about manatees and there was a diver cleaning the tank when we went in the morning. The water is clear and provides a great view of the manatees. There is also a planetarium with several different shows. We went to the one about this month’s skies. I do no recommended that show. There was no real show. Just basically, “What do you want to see”. Boring and not very informative. The person giving the show didn’t seem to know what to do. Better to go to another show that is produced more like a set show. Overall, if you like museum and natural history you can’t go wrong at this great place.

No. There are no restaurants onsite, but many good ones within an easy walk (3-4 blocks). Pier 22 and o'Bricks are two of my favorites. Enjoy!

Not as far as I'm conscerned. Every exhibit is described in detail so that you can wander around visiting the varied displays at your leisure. As always a knowledgeable docent always adds those snippets of information that aren't writen down for you to absorb. It's certainly worth a visit, but be prepared to make a second visit.
