Well worth visit when sandhill cranes there
Jan 2021
We were in Willcox for birding festival and could easily understand why the organizers had participants meet here. There was thousands of sand hill cranes, along with several other bird species, in the pond. Fun stop whether a birder or not.

Good birding site

Since migration is almost over, there wasn't much variety. Lots of white face ibis, American avocet, black-necked stilt but if you search, there are a few more species.

Excellent Birding Spot
Apr 2019 • Couples
The road that circles the lake here provides excellent opportunties to watch the birds, and the early morning seems to be the best viewing time. We spotted many different species of ducks, American Avocet, White-faced Ibis, Black-necked Stilt, Marbled Godwit, and Wilsons Phalarope and others. CAUTION - Be careful of the nest of bees swarming around the huge metal tap-like valve on the north-east side of the lake near the old pier that juts out into the water. Even walking on the road, the bees swarmed toward us, so give them a wide berth!

Birding Paradise

If you are interested in seeing migrating ducks this is a great place. This lake area has been identified by the state of Arizona as an Important Bird Area or as they refer as an IBA. The large lake is a broad alkaline lake bed fringed with semi-desert grassland (primarily saltgrass and sacaton) and mesquite. It is an ideal feeding ground for shore birds, ducks and many varieties that visit here throughout various times of the year. As I visited today there were large numbers of Northern Shovelers, Ruddy Ducks Wigeons, Grebe,Teal and Coots. There is a smooth unimproved road that circles around the lake with several places to stop and take photographs. There is also a viewing stand off to the side by the golf course. There were very large numbers of Sandhill Crane feeding just on the other side of the course.

If your in town and a birder this is a must stop. Cranes and various waterfowl were seen. We even seen the Eurasian Wigeon a local rarity.

Excellent Birding
Apr 2018 • Couples
We've found that early morning is the best time to view the birds. The first thing we saw was a golden eagle taking flight. Later we watched the birds take off in a panic as the eagle soared over the water, and then flew directly over our heads. There were many different species of ducks, sandpipers and avocets in the pond.. We saw javelina tracks all through the dirt by the road and then spotted 3 of them far off in the grass fields. Definitely worth the stop here!

We were a couple of weeks too early. We saw lots of ducks, no geese and one flight of swans that were feeding in a nearby field.

A great place to find birds
Jan 2017 • Couples
This literal oasis in the desert continues to be a great place to find unusual birds, particularly waterfowl and shorebirds.

Brief Stop
Jan 2016 • Solo
The Wings over Willcox Festival brings a busload of birders here at sunset hoping to see the sandhill cranes. There wasn't much activity for them but plenty of varieties of ducks. We moved on to the power plant where there was more sandhill crane activity.
