Our tour through the Bisti Badlands with Kialo was simply amazing. This is a place I have wanted to go for awhile, however I was too scared to attempt it without a guide, as there are no paths or trails so I imagined it would be easy to get lost. I really recommend using Navajo Tours USA if you want to see this remote area. Kialo was a fantastic guide - very knowledgable about everything, shared lots of great stories, and he knew tons of places to stop and take pictures. I was in awe at how beautiful this wilderness was and how many cool things we got to see on our hike. My husband and I will never forget this tour. It was definitely the highlight of our vacation around the southwest.

We did an unbelievable 5-hr tour of the Bisti with Kialo and it was certainly one we will remember for the rest of our lives. The meeting point was very easy to find and we followed Kialo in our car to the parking lot, and from there we began our 5.5mile hike to explore the Bisti. Kialo provided great commentary along the way as we made our way to see the egg hatchery, hoodoo city, the brown + vanilla hoodoos, manta ray wings, stone wings, and lots of petrified wood.
Kialo is extremely knowledgeable of the area and as so can provide the best photo opportunities. We were able to take amazing photos even on a cloudy day and caught the best sunset. Kialo also took photos for us with his camera and shared them in an album with us after.
It was an unbelievable experience and if you are in the area, you should definitely hit up Navajo Tours- don't even attempt to do this on your own without a guide... you won't be able to find the good spots or even find your car on your way back ;)

Kialo was fantastic! He was on time for our meeting. While Navajo is probably his first language his English is perfect and without any accent. His past history as an educator and communicator make listening to him both comfortable and effective. Being 71 years old with hearing problems, I never had a problem with Kialo's pace of speech, volume, and pronunciation. His intimate multi dimensional knowledge of the Chaco Culture kept us mesmerized hour after hour. He never rushed through his commentary and it did not seem memorized. There were 3 of us and we had probably 100 questions in total on both the historical and spiritual aspects of the Chaco Canyon site and the Navajo people in general. He articulately answered every single one of them in a compete, comprehensive, and understandable way. We think Kialo's tour was the highlight of our trip to Albuquerque. We plan to return and be with him if possible for the Summer Solstice Ceremony.

My wife and I recently did the Bisti Wilderness Tour with Kialo, and we are more than satisfied with our experience. We highly recommend this tour, and it was definitely the highlight of our vacation.
The tour itself involves walking through the badland area, fairly flat, a bit under 6 miles round-trip. I would recommend that you book a tour that ends close to sunset, as the lighting for photography is simply gorgeous, plus, depending on the weather, it's not as hot, as there is not much shade on this tour.
Kialo is a wonderful tour guide, knowledgeable of the area and the people. He is also a good photographer, taking additional photos for us, and sending us the pictures afterwards.
As for the tour itself, the first half is pretty simple, as we made a bee-line to the furthest point. But the landscape becomes so much more interesting on the way back, with many areas you simply wish you could spend more time to stop and photograph.
In summary, come and visit this relatively unknown, but simply gorgeous landscape.

I just wanted to give thanks to Kialo Winters for the amazing and safe tour to the Valley of Dreams. Although we faced the risk of thunderstorm and sandstorm for the day of our trip, Kialo was vigilant of the cloud and wind patterns as he was giving us the tour. Very knowledgeable and competent about the landscape. I highly recommend anyone to contract Kialo and his guides at Navajo Tours USA for any sight seeing within the Bisti Wilderness. Just to add to this review, I had originally planned to navigate this terrain on my own using my gps. I reached out to a representative of the bureau of land management for coordinate points. They were very uncertain and recommended me to reach out to local guides for help. So there it is, it’s best to arrange a guide if you’re going into depths of the Bisti Wilderness.

What an amazing experience! I booked this tour after reading several travel blogs about the Bisti Badlands and that it was really easy for a first timer to get lost, so I figured it was best to go with someone who knew the area.
Navajo Tours was exceptional in the delivery of both an informative and personal experience. Our tour guide Kialo shared with us not only the history of the De-Na-Zin Wilderness, lead us to amazing photo opportunities, and pointed out numerous things we would have missed otherwise; but he also took the time to connect with each one of us on the tour over the five hours. He asked thoughtful questions of us, and shared his own stories about building this company with his wife, and perhaps most memorable for me was the pride in his voice as he spoke about his daughters.
This is not your average tour, and we are so grateful to have been guided by Kialo and Navajo Tours!

Kialo was an INCREDIBLE person to meet, share stories and culture with, and learn about this awe inspiring landscape. To move through Bisti with Kialo with so much more context and in a respectful way. We are still processing how much we learned and how the landscape has influenced us even afterwards. Never have we had such an intimate experience for such a good chunk of time - we came away with feeling very immersed and enriched. Cannot recommend this enough and we can’t wait to come back and explore their other tour offerings!

For years, I've wanted to visit Chaco Canyon, but I didn't think it would be feasible as a solo traveler until I contacted Navajo Tours USA. Booking a group tour via email was easy, and Kialo provided a clear itinerary for the day. Everything went smoothly on the day of the tour, and there were only two other people in my group. Each of us had time to ask lots of questions and take lots of photos. Above all that, Kialo is an incredible guide who knows both the written research and the Native oral tradition of Chaco Canyon. If you're into archaeoastronomy, Kialo will amaze you with his knowledge. I hope to book other tours with this company the next time I'm in New Mexico.

I'm new to New Mexico and was looking to see more of the amazing scenery during my recent vacation. I decided on the Bisti Badlands after reading about it online. However, I know my limitations and decided I wasn't comfortable visiting it on my own so I booked a tour with Navajo Tours. It was a great decision! Kialo was a wonderful guide. He kept things at a slow pace for me and we kept to the easier route through the hoodoos. His expert guiding and his sharing of both local Navajo history and some of his personal history made the tour even better. I would recommend Kialo to anyone who asked for a topnotch guide through the Bisti Badlands and other points or interest in the area.

We just came back from a tour with Kialo and Gil and had a fabulous time. Besides helping us navigate really remote terrains with great patience and knowledge, Kialo spent a good deal of time sharing stories from his cultural Navajo/Pueblo background. He clearly is very proud of his heritage and has dedicated his life to creating opportunities for his family and his people. If you go with Kialo, he will add a lot of dimensionality to this region and provide a tremendous amount of context and history that in itself is worthwhile, not to mention the stunning scenery we got to experience. I can't recommend his tour more highly. We also went to Chaco Canyon with him, another must-see highlight.

Do the tours to Chaco provide transportation to and from the site?
Written November 5, 2023
Farmington and Bloomfield are closest cities with lodging. You drive from there to get to Chaco. There is a very nice campground right inChaco so if you camp, that’s a good option. In any case you will still need your own vehicle to drive to the Chaco visitor center and also drive, within the park,

How long does the Chaco Canyon tour take to complete?
Written July 8, 2019
Our Chaco Canyon tour takes 5 hours to complete. We visit three Great Houses and have lunch under a pergola.

How much hiking was involved? Was there a lot of elevation gain during the hiking. My husband has afib and has to rest a lot. Is this tour with other people? We wouldn't want to slow a group down so would probably only go if it was only us with the guides. Thanks for any info.

Hi Rita J.
When I went, I was the only client. I am sure on other days there will be others on the tour.
There was only one spot where your husband might have problems and that was walking up past some ruins to the petroglyphs in the hillside. I am sure that he could wait at the bottom if he felt that it was something he couldn't/shouldn't do.
The walk up to Casa Rinconada is a gradual rising slope and is about 300 metres from the car park.
The other sites from memory are relatively flat.
Suggest emailing Kialo Winters and 'have a chat'. I am sure that 'all things are possible'. Ask him your questions explaining what you are worried about and I am sure he will be more than willing to answer.
Google Navajo Tours USA and a page should come up as Private Tour etc. Can't give you a link as TripAdvisor doesn't permit it.
All the best.
