Neighborhood: Greenwich Village
Commonly known as “the Village” to New Yorkers, it was here in Greenwich Village that both 1960’s counter culture and the LGBT movement were born. Famous for its bohemian past, head to Washington Square Park to get a feel for this diverse and energetic neighborhood. You’ll find NYU students, street performers, skateboarders, kids frolicking in the fountain, and locals relaxing and playing chess. Stroll the streets to discover a mix of majestic town homes and hidden bars and restaurants that give this neighborhood an old-school residential feel. When the sun goes down, check out one of the famous jazz or comedy clubs that still packs them in every night.

Wandering around the West Village and had one of the "locals " direct me to this little slice of natural beauty and peaceful contemplation. A number of short, but curved paths taking maximum advantage of the limited space. Lots of different flowers and bushes with many benches and seats. Lovely

Providence or destiny - take your pick but I found this place completely by chance
Having completed the High Line, I thought I'd carry on further south and explore "the Village", a fine idea in theory but not on a hot day.
I was about to turn back for the return trek when I noticed the garden through the gate off Hudson Street - actually I noticed the shade and the seats first.
It was a heaven sent opportunity to recharge spiritual batteries and rest my feet and after half an hour of quiet meditation (cunningly disguised as a short nap) I felt much better and set off again.
If you are in the area, do take the time to drop in both for the tranquility and, if you are a gardener, for what is a really an extremely good planting scheme.

A delightful retreat, this lovely garden has seating where you can take a respite from your walking tour of the Village, meditate peacefully, or just enjoy the sun or a bit of shade. Two-thirds of an acre of plantings attract many species of birds, butterlies and moths. Barrow Street and north gardens open daily 8 am till dusk; Rectory Garden from 10-5 M-Thurs. Closed holidays. Food okay; no smoking or alcohol.

The Gardena at St. Luke’s are in all honesty a bit bare and drab in the winter months. We will return in the spring and review again.

We just happened on this garden. It's right next to bigger construction, and the garden also had some work underway. It's a nice little oasis.

This garden in the West Village almost makes one forget the noise of the city. A relaxing place to read and just unwind.

If you are only in NYC for an hour, go here. It is that significant. If your trip permits a longer Manhattan stay, spend more time in same. How any church can leave it's meticulously groomed gardens wide open, daily, to anyone at all? PreRevolutionary Amsterdamners flood this space. Quite possibly the largest accumulation of friendly ghosts anywhere in NYC. Wander through all portions and the very soul of The West Village is exclusively yours.
