This play is a MUST SEE. The talent is overwhelming, and the performances will give you chills! Wonderful chills! We made a 200 mile drive on the coldest day of the year and would do it again and again. Just fantastic!

I saw the movie SO long ago with Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah, so didn't know quite what to expect. A simple Spartan stage lent to further heightening the focus on performance. Amazing singing, interactions, acting ... All drawing out emotions from me and the rest of the crowd. I've never been to a musical where the ovation came BEFORE the end. And another long long long one at the end. GO SEE THIS. and, go to TKTS for 1/2 off tickets. Small theater with NO BAD SEATS.

U seen color purple the movie u know the story. I wanted to see this show when fantasia was playing Celie because everyone knows I love me some fantasia but I'm glad I missed her. Because I got to see three amazing women in one night. The multi talented Danielle Brooks I didn't know she could sing like that, the lovely heather headley who I have been dying to see on broadway for years (so glad she replace hudson) and the astounding cynthia erivo who has a voice of an angel and has made the song I'm here hers and hers alone. The entire cast can sang beautifully and their voices work so well together. This is the perfect cast for this play and I know they will miss headley when she departs as shug Avery. I was nearly in tears by the end of this show. Their vocals the entire cast will give you chills. And I must say I was very impress with the young lady that played Nettie. Joaquina kalukango probably never mentioned because of the other stars but her voice is beautiful and I'm sure she will be a broadway star. Bravo to this amazing cast a must see show! U have to see this show! I repeat if u r in new york don't miss the color purple. I had a great seat on the side mezzanine in the first row of it. Seen the entire stage. Now Go!

Truly amazing night....seats were second row from the front and totally worth the money. I wanted to see something original, so checked the preview out on You Tube and was sold straight away. Stars were excellent, laughter, fun and true emotion in the show. The singing was amazing. I would see it all over again!

Upon arrival, the minimal set made me question our choice of shows, but once the performers started singing, I stopped questioning everything. The music was outstanding and the way the story was portrayed was even better. One of the most moving shows I have seen!

WOW!! What a show. I treated my daughter to this show while we were visiting New York for her 21st birthday. We absolutely loved it. The performances of all the cast are first class. We were left spellbound by it. I really can't find the words to tell you how good this show is. You must go and see it.
The singing voice of Cynthia Erivo make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up!

This show is amazing! The vocals by Cynthia Erivo are something you have to experience. Jennifer Hudson gives a great performance too! Best show on Broadway ever! This cast doesn't have a weak link. Perfect performance!

Yes! This revival really does the trick. Fantastic cast triangulated by Cynthia Erivo, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Hudson. You'll be bouncing and empathizing with these talents throughout. The story sort of gets lost at times, but the performers pull it back with their fantastic energy.

I have been fortunate to see many of the musicals on Bdway this year and The Color Purple has to rank as #1 for me this year. Admittedly I have not see Hamilton but have seen Kinky Boots (#2), On Your Feet (#3), King and I (#4), School of Rock, Fiddler, and Fun Home.
I knew lttle about Cynthia Erivo and Danieele Brooks prior to the performance. Of course Jennifer Hudson is already a star due to her great performance in Dreamgirls in part. The three of them go all out to make this a memorable show both in terms of emotion and music. There is not a moment to sit back and catch your breath. Cynthis should win the Tony in my humble opinion. This little diva can sing with the best of them including Jennifer, Audra McDonald, Kelly O'Hara etc. The rest of the cast is superb and tells the famous story with all the emotion it deserves.
You will not be disappointed. I have already booked tickets to see it again. Sit up close if possible as I always think this makes any performance a little more special.

can you tell me who some of the cast that stood was. i heard that they changed the cast and wondered if they are as good, by your review i would imagine they are. I am not going till December so it may change again
Written September 18, 2016
Hi, Lindyl. Cast changes are quite common on Broadway musicals. But, the quality of the productions is so high, that even understudies perform amazingly. So, I would go anyway, even if Ms. Erivo has left the production. Color Purple is a very very sad drama, with a lot of pain, sorrow and tears. Therefore, it allows singers to use their voices up to fantastic emotional tunes. About seating: orchestra seats are a must, I guess. But, at the same time, Broadway tickets are quite expensive, specially for us, Brazilians, due to actual exchange rates. I buy all my tickets, on the same day, at half of the theater price, at TKT's office on Times Square. They open the selling booths on 2PM. It means long queues and patience. Since they are only selling seats that were not previously sold for that very same evening, it may happen that what you are expecting to see is sold out. Having a second best choice is important. You mentioned you are going on December. It is high season in NYC and it might be somehow difficult to find tickets on the spot. So, if you are really wanting to see Color Purple, buy a good orchestra seat now and enjoy the show! Regards. Luiz.

Theres been a change in cast and i was quite worried about that. What is the quality of the main characters and who stood out. I am concerned about the seating as its hard to book online when you dont have anything to go on only a picture of the seating at the theatre. Did you purchase your tickets on the day of the show or before. i am worried that if i leave it till i go over in December i won't get decent tickets

I bought my ticket the day of the show at a TKTS booth. Our seats were 3/4 of the way back from the stage. I was pleased with my seat. As far as the casting changes I'm not sure. The performance was great and I would go again. I don't think you have to worry about the quality of the performers. Danielle Brooks was awesome and Heather Headley did a great job too and she replaced Jennifer Hudson.

Broadwaybox is a good source. You won't find the big shows there--HAMILTON, BEAUTIFUL, ALADDIN, BOOK OF MORMON and such, but they do have a lot of excellent shows. I just looked and here is what is what I have seen and that I would recommend:
An American in Paris – one of the best musicals I’ve seen in years. Great Gershwin score. Dancing is phenomenal.
Bright Star – besides Hamilton, this is my favorite new musical this season.
Fiddler On The Roof –very good production. Good for all ages.
Fun Home – one of the best from last year. For older teens and older.
Kinky Boots – a fun, raucous show.
Les Miserables – the old war horse is still worth a visit.
Long Day's Journey Into Night – if you want some heavy drama.
Matilda – more if you are looking for a family friendly musical.
School of Rock – another family friendly musical based on the movie.
She Loves Me – great acting, great score, a classic.
Something Rotten –very silly, but fun and tuneful.
The Color Purple – the best revival of the season.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time – one of the best dramas I’ve seen in years.
The Father – only 90 minute drama; Frank Langella is great.
The King and I – large scale production with the great Rodgers & Hammerstein score.
The Phantom of the Opera – still going strong after decades on Broadway.
Tuck Everlasting – a solid, family oriented musical.
You can call the phone number and give them the discount code that is listed. The problem with Broadwaybox when you call is they tack on a $10-$15 surcharge per ticket. It will still be discounted, but not that much. If you are not set on a specific show my recommendation would be to print out 5-7 Broadway shows with their discount codes and then go to the box office the day of the show with the printout. You can go right when the box office opens at 10am. Even if you go later there are usually no lines. If you purchase the tickets at the box office there is no surcharge per ticket. You can also look at the seating chart and get the advice of the box office person. At the TKTS booth you don't get a choice. This will only work for shows that are not selling out.
Hope this helps.
