The Harlem Repertory Theatre is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) theater committed to producing artistically and intellectually challenging productions that explore the experiences of a diverse range of ethnic, social and cultural communities. Moreover, The HRT stages new works and established classic musicals and plays from bold and innovative perspectives that will challenge and/or reflect the Harlem community's cultural and social values. The HRT staff is committed to offering first-rate and affordable theatrical performances to the greater Tri State area. In conclusion, The HRT is committed to fulfilling Langston Hughes’ 1938 vision for a professional theatre in Harlem: "...On the opening night... a beaming Langston renew(ed) his promise of a Harlem repertory theatre: 'We want to build a theatre for you folks, a theatre for which you may write, in which you may act. This is your theatre.' " Langston Hughes April 21, 1938 It is our hope to begin to realize this dream of a Harlem Repertory Theatre that the remarkable Langston Hughes had for the Harlem Community. Please help us make Mr. Hughes’ dream and ours a reality by supporting the Harlem Repertory Theatre

In The Heights. Wonderful production.
May 2017 • Family
A most enjoyable production of In The Heights. Chose seats right on stage. Actors running past throughout just added to the great feel of the production. Lead voices on the most part we're very good. Some of the tech needs to be ironed out but being so close was hardly noticeable.

Big energy + big emotion + fun space made for a great time!!

THANK YOU for the wonderful review! Our revival of In The Heights was nominated for the AUDELCO in best musical revival for 2016. We didn't take home the award, but the real prize is the amazing response from audience members like you! The audio get's tricky some shows due to gremlins, but luckily the great performers make up for those issues when they arise.

Go to this wonderful little theatre. The performance was fantastic and the whole cast was superb, very high standard of acting. And soooo enjoyable, Touching , witty... and you feel part of the show in this theatre, as others say, there are no bad seats, and it's lovely to be so close to the action. If you're around and they've got a show on, GO!

Oh my, cannot begin to tell you how wonderful this play was. My husband and I had the premium seats, we were in the front row of this little theatre and we were magically transformed to another era. The acting was superb and the cast were so warm that they came out to shake our hands after the play finished. I am looking forward to other plays they will put out. I recommend it 1,000%.

THANK YOU for the wonderful review! The cast always enjoys taking pictures after each show. You may or may have not realized it was probably the director/artistic director also walking around seating people. It is a small theatre company where we enjoy making a connection with our audience.

Thoroughly engaging theater experience!
Aug 2015 • Friends
First time visiting this venue and must say that I had a marvelous time! Tickets are inexpensive compared to Broadway and while the productions are not lavishly 'set', they are extremely well-acted.

I saw "In the Heights" (August 2015) and my advise is...RUN to your computer and purchase your tickets. I saw the Broadway version of this play and felt that the Harlem Repertory version was just as lively (a bit different as they made it 'their own') as the high-money Broadway production; the actors engaged me, the music uplifted me, and the creative use of the theater as part of the staging delighted me.

EVERY SEAT is a good seat in this small venue (except, perhaps, the seats on the stage, since the folks sitting there would have to turn this way and that to see the action occurring behind them and around them)--the seats form a semi-circle around the stage. Singers' voices were uniformely on pitch and really carried well in the small theater. I laughed and, yes, I cried--the actors did move me.

There's evidently two teams of actors who perform. I don't know WHICH team I had (red or blue) but on a Saturday night in the summer, can't think of a better place to be. I look forward to seeing Raisin in the Sun when it next opens.

One thing I must mention, though, is that when I ordered tickets online, I was charged $1.50 to print my tickets AT HOME! I've NEVER paid for print-at -home tix. Readers, there is NO reason to print at home, just pick up there. The theater is on the 1st floor of a building and there is no 'box office'--there's a woman sitting at a small desk with a checklist. Just step up and give your name/conf. number and you're IN.
