I arranged to visit Attaboy as our first date was at Milk and Honey on our last night in New York. So this should have been special. Despite getting in before others, we were made to stand as we were a couple. We very politely asked if we could sit in an empty booth to drink our drink quickly in 5 mins then go. We were not told we would have to stand by a drinks prep area and drink, I’m recovering from a broken ankle. We explained this and was only met with a flat out no and hostility. We left without trying the drink. Don’t believe the hype.

Speakeasy with customized drinks. Came here in a group of four friends per the suggestion of one of them who’s been there before, and really enjoyed his experience. There’s no sign to alert you to its location, but there’s a line of people standing outside so you’ll know where it is. You give your name and number to the doorman (he comes in and out sporadically) and it was a 45 min wait to get in. We went to another bar to kill time, but note your spot is held for only 15 min. When we got back, we had to go back in line and it took 10 min to get in. We were seated at first in the front by the door but were later moved to a booth in the back, which was a much more spacious experience. The doorman gave us glasses of water and then we explained to him what our preferred spirits were/what flavor profile we liked. It took about 15 min to get the drinks ($19 each plus tip). The drinks were all very good. One of my friends got what was called a Gold rush, which had bourbon, lemon, and honey with bitters, garnished with mint. There was also a hint of ginger. There are no hot drinks (I had wanted a spiced hot chocolate) but I then explained that I liked smooth drinks and wanted something with a holiday twist. They gave me a Cafe con leche, which had egg creme, coffee liqueur, and nutmeg - really delicious. Another favorite that my friend ordered was their Easy street drink, which had gin base alongside club soda, elderflower, lime, and cucumber. It was very refreshing and smelled delicious. My fourth friend got a drink similar to mine but since she doesn’t like coffee, her drink had banana, bourbon, egg creme, and nutmeg. There’s a bathroom in the back and it’s a place for small groups and intimate conversations. It’s dimly lit and has elegant decor. There’s a bathroom in the back and no public WiFi. They do take credit cards. I would suggest coming here at an off time so you could avoid a long wait. Overall I think this place has high quality cocktails and a cool vibe, it’s just disorganized in terms of getting in and you’ll need to be patient.

One of my favourite Speakeasy bars. Only small but this adds to it’s ambience and atmosphere. There are no menus. You tell the mixologists what flavours and drinks you like and they will make up your cocktail. Broke our one drink per bar visit whilst on holiday in NY and ended up ordering another. Definitely recommend.

Disclaimer: my visit took place the night before Attaboy won "Best American Cocktail Bar" at Tales so I understand and accept that their main squad was in New Orleans...but at the same time any place up for that award really shouldn't skimp on the service, especially not when up for that award. Or maybe my experience was their standard. I don't know. In any case my friend and I were in town strictly for a high end cocktail bar tour as that is my profession and is one of her passions, and Attaboy was high on our list. We showed up and put our name on the list, we were told the wait would be "not too long, maybe 2 or 3 hours" which made us think wtf that doesn't sound like "not too long." We decided to pop over to Copper & Oak a few blocks away to check out their unique vibe and extensive Japanese whiskey selection, and about 45 minutes later I received the call that they had space for us. That was a lot faster than expected since we were quoted at 2-3 hours so I'm not complaining about that part. We get in and sit down, and like everyone else does I say what I'm looking for. I tell the bartender: "something rye based, presence of amaro, not too bitter and DEFINITELY not a Manhattan." Now if someone said that to me I would have made them a Pop Quiz or a variation thereof, but he comes back to me and sets a drink in front of me saying "rye, sweet vermouth, amaro nardini, orange bitters." As he walks away my friend says "isn't that a Manhattan?" "Yes. Yes it is." The drink I specifically asked to not receive. Don't get me wrong it was delicious, I love nardini but I asked the soon-to-be-crowned "Best American Cocktail Bar" for a not-Manhattan and was given a Manhattan. That didn't leave a good first impression, and the bartender didn't even stick around or check up on us later to see if we enjoyed our drinks. It was just kinda like "here's your drink, drink it. F you, you better enjoy it." Personally I always make sure that if someone gives an open-ended order they enjoy what I made them, and that's not my spot's entire business model. For my second drink I asked for the bartender's favorite riff on a Naked and Famous and he gave me a Mosquito Cocktail which I was not familiar with. Mezcal, Campari, ginger syrup, lemon. It was actually quite good and he redeemed himself a bit in my opinion but that Manhattan situation really started the experience in the wrong direction. I personally love when someone challenges me with their flavor preferences, and if that's your whole business model maybe don't give someone the drink they specified they didn't want. I get so many vague af requests and I'm sure they do too which is why I tried to be as specific as possible while still allowing a lot of room for creative freedom, and it seemed like he just kinda phoned that one in. I was really looking forward to my time at Attaboy based on every recommendation I'd heard from co-workers/acquaintances. I had high hopes and I was disappointed to encounter a "eh whatever" attitude from the bartender. We went to Existing Conditions afterwards and had an infinitely better time. The bartender there took a personal interest in our experience and even completely changed my friend's mind about tiki drinks in one attempt.

Do not waste your time at this boring pretentious bar. There are hundreds of great bars in New York. You can’t even choose your own cocktail. You are given a small overpriced drink. It isn’t a speakeasy bar because the queue outside gives the doorway away. Terrible!
