- Lily G1 contributionExperienced Racism0 stars if I could. The line to the elevator was getting long so the employee who was checking IDs on 4/30 around 12:15AM asked us to step back to the roped area which we did (but slowly because we were tipsy) and he exclaimed in an exasperated tone "I don't speak Chinese". ??? Monarch can check cameras if they want and see that we weren't disrespectful or disruptive at all. Just because we are Asian why was he assuming that we are Chinese? And if we are so what? i don't think this employee's behavior is representative of Monarch's but the fact that he works for Monarch means he represents Monarch in some way and for a racist person to represent a NYC bar is just sad. There are plenty of other rooftop bars in the city. Monarch probably won't even care about this review but if you're Asian and you come across a Caucasian man with shoulder-length black hair and textured face who's checking IDs-just be wary. Definitely wouldn't go back to Monarch just because of tonight.Visited April 2023Traveled with friendsWritten April 29, 2023
- NYDuckNew York City, New York24 contributionsRude, condescending staffWe are 2 couples who have frequented the Monarch and have always enjoyed memorable visits to the Monarch including a 50th anniversary celebration in 2022. On July 4th the four of us came to the Monarch at about 2:30. The girl downstairs would not allow us upstairs stating in so many words that our attire didn’t fall into their dress code specifically because one of us had on sandals She would not listen to our outrage and finally said to wait and she would go upstairs and speak to the management about us. We were humiliated!!! The lobby was full of people witnessing this She finally came down and said we could go up without explanation or apology When we got up the place was basically empty (it had started raining). Again asked for reservation then finally seated outside under an awning. We waited for 20 minutes and a server never came out, we eventually went to bar and got our own drinks. We proceeded to watch a server come to other tables and also saw girls in flip flops ( are they ok under your dress code?) Ultimately it was the bartender who would come out and check on us once in a while and we went to bar and ordered our win food. We split a $300 bill. So good to know that the Monarch is doing so well financially that they can humiliate returning customers and then treat them so terribly! Perhaps we need to frequent establishments that value all their customers!Visited July 2023Written July 10, 2023
- Sara R2 contributionsTitle: Disappointing Experience at Monarch Rooftop, New York CityMy friend and I decided to visit Monarch Rooftop in New York City yesterday, expecting a pleasant rooftop experience. However, our visit left much to be desired. We arrived at 4 p.m. on a rainy day without a reservation, assuming the place would be nearly empty. Despite this, our experience was far from enjoyable. Upon our arrival, we passed the hostess, who casually instructed us to find a seat whenever we liked. We opted for a corner table and settled in. I ordered an espresso martini with a shot of Baileys, which turned out to be a disappointment. The drink arrived resembling a smoothie and had a taste that left much to be desired. To accompany our drinks, we decided to share the chicken tacos. To our surprise, they were the tiniest tacos we had ever seen and did not justify their price. The underwhelming food and drink choices were setting the tone for a less-than-ideal evening. However, our dissatisfaction didn't end there. After an hour, the hostess approached us and informed us that we needed to relocate to the bar. This request felt unwarranted and perplexing. We were soon approached by someone who was supposedly the manager, although his attire did not make it apparent. Reluctantly, we moved to the bar and ordered one more round of drinks. Throughout our time at Monarch Rooftop, we couldn't shake the feeling of discomfort. It seemed as though the staff was constantly trying to hurry patrons to pay and vacate their tables. This experience left us disappointed and frustrated, especially given that it was a slow day. We shudder to think about how they might treat customers on a busier day. In conclusion, our visit to Monarch Rooftop was marred by subpar drinks, overpriced food, and a general sense of unease due to the staff's eagerness to turn over tables. We were left with the impression that customer satisfaction was not a priority, and this has been one of the worst rooftop experiences we have had in New York City. We hope the management takes steps to improve their service and atmosphere for future patrons.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten September 24, 2023

unfortunately we were treated like a crap at the entrance. We were denied entrance just because we said we really have to use the restroom badly as we were in the car for over an hour and thirty mins..
The manager and the person at the entrance was not even ready to listen to us and turned us down saying we are denied the entry.. eventhough we had reservations
this was completely wrong.. we were in our complete senses as we argued in a very proper and sophisticated manner..
we would like to take actions against you. Just wanted to let you guys know that this was very very disappointing experience.. and this was nothing but racism.
Horrible is an understatement

Great view and break away from the busy streets! We booked for a birthday and I did add this on my booking note, however this wasn’t acknowledged during our time here. I think they could have made a little fuss considering the place was quite empty. Drinks came out quickly and are reasonable for the location. Servers attending to other tables appear to ignore you if you ask for their attention, which is a bit odd.

We had our wedding here and it was out of this world, it totally exceeded out expectations and the guests all thought it was amazing too. The venue looked amazing for our big day, the views are unreal! Genese (the events director) was the best and helped us plan everything, she was really supportive and enthusiastic. We didn’t even need a wedding planner!
Food was great as was the service! Highly recommend this fantastic rooftop!

We came on a Saturday night and it was pretty busy, but it was a very cool experience. We had a lot of fun standing outside talking to complete strangers. It was pretty easy to strike up a conversation while standing under a patio heater on a cold December night while standing on a rooftop in Manhattan.

This is a spot you go for privacy. Romantic setting with couches. It is small. Not a lot of seating if it is cold or raining. They also close it for private events fairly often but try to leave a little section open. Service id good. Excellent for pre dinner drinks if you are staying there. If not, there are better views at other rooftops nearby

One of the best rooftop bar in NY. The view is incredible, the empire state building look amazing from there. We went on the sunset time and the view was beauty. In the night, the buildings look beautiful and the lights of the empire state look amazing. The place is cozy, clean and comfy. Great time there.

Hi there, Congratulations! We definitely recommend making a reservation, especially to ensure we are not closed for a private event. You can book your reservation directly on our website.

I’ll be in NY with my 7 year old son. I’d love to show him the views from here. Would he be allowed entry?

Hi there, we are a strictly 21 & over establishment. We do host some family friends special events, like Thanksgiving, but these are ticketed private events. If you'd like to make a reservation, please email us directly to see if we can make an exception for an early time. We apologize for the inconvenience.

We are considering going there for New Years Eve, but we are worried there wont be any dancing.

The dance floor is extremely small. Unless you book a table with a determined spending amount ie $100 or more you won’t have a seat. The dance floor is the bar and it’s very small. I hope this helps in your decision

Hi Paula,
Unfortunately Monarch Rooftop is a 21 & over venue. At time we host kid friendly events such as our upcoming Pumpkin carving event. We hope this is helpful and you're able to visit soon.

Visiting from South Africa early July and wanting to book a table in the outside rooftop section. One of the party is under 21 - understand she won’t be served alcohol which is fine but will she be allowed in? She will be with her mother...
