We met James in Soho and he took us for a tour around and to China Town. We learned a lot about street art photography and learned a lot about the area.
James is not only good photographer, he is also really good company. Time flew by so fast, we could have continued even longer.
And we really love the pictures we took with the training of James.
WE saw other photo tours on our way where everyone seemed to be on trial and error mode. If you are thinking about the price, it was worth every penny!

I took a private photo workshop with James; I did his SoHo tour and enjoyed it immensely. James provided great tips on street photography and photographing in the city in general. He was able to help me with settings on my camera. He brought me to nooks and crannies in the neighborhoods where I'd never been and shared interesting info about the spots (including tips on favorite restaurants). Fun!

Before selecting James as our guide and street photography instructor I checked out others, too. Most of them where cheaper, but not offering an individual tour. My aim was to get some advice in streetphotographing. Staying around with a bunch of people at NY crossings didn't seem to be appropriate to me.
Further more from his web site I got the first impressions about his tours he offers, general tips for doing sightseeing in NYC (this was essential to our own planning for our stay in NYC).
His response to my inquiry was prompt and setting up of our work-shop was a minute job, including the payment of the deposit.
James was in time as promised and we had a great time. He explained to me the essentials of street photographie, but also some historical inputs concerning architecture, buildings and people living in them.
All together this afternoon was worth every Dollar
All the best to James and his business
Henning (and Bettina, who never felt bored as well)

We met James for a half day walk around less known parts of lower Manhattan. And we had fantastic time. James is incredibly knowledgable person with tons of interesting facts and information. We saw places where we would have never gone on ourselves. Distant from tourist attractions (and traps) yet full of life, colour and history. On top of I was able to learn from James a lot about street photography and his enthusiasm has been contagious ! We would highly recommend James as your New York City guide as well as photography tutor. Thank you James for a very memorable and fantastic time!

I spent an enjoyable and educational three hours on a street photography walking tour with James Maher in lower Manhattan, including Soho, Chinatown and finishing up on the Manhattan bridge at sunset. It was an excellent mix of photography tips and background about the streets and neighborhoods. James knows photography and the city and is fun to be with.

Highly recommended for amateurs and professionals alike. James knows his stuff, and is willing to tailor the tour to the time, place, and subject you need help with. As a NYC local, James also knows where to take you for the shots you're looking for. I am a better photographer today because of it; thanks!

As a surprise element of my 50th birthday trip to New York, some friends kindly purchased a guided photography tour with James. There's not much I can add to what has been regularly said here - James is knowledgeable of the areas we visited, not only guiding on photographic opportunities but also teaching my wife and I about the area and it's history - a great way to explore parts of NYC and get a sense of the place. James was a pleasure to spend time with - cheerful, humorous and patient with a 6'2" photographer trying to blend in and take discreet street images! Thanks James - we both had a fantastic time with you. Oh, and pay attention to his restaurant recommendations - he steered us very well indeed! :-)

When travelling I always source a local photographer by researching reviews. For my recent trip to NYC I found James Maher what an awesome experience!
James offers private guided tours options are iconic sights Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, Bryant Park,Times Square, Nyc Library, the Roc or the more off the beaten track Chinatown,Canal St, Soho and Manhattan Bridge. I chose the 2nd less iconic tour, James led an engaging tour exploring corners of NYC I would have never found. The tour allow me to discover the real art of street photography my favourite being Greene Street in Soho. Thank you James I can definitely recommend booking this tour if you are a keen photographer and James is an excellent tour guide providing you with a wealth of local information on the big apple! I booked a private tour for my self and daughter (max 4 people) $295USD for 3 hours! Great value!

I recently spent a morning walking and photographing with James Maher. James is knowledgable about local history and street photography and brought me to places I would never have found on my own. He helped me build confidence in photographing people on the street and in a park and pointed out amazing buildings and perspectives.
I can not recommend James more highly

Is it better to use a camera or could I use my cell phone camera for this? I am debating on actually bringing my gear or not.

If you do not want to bring a camera, a cellphone will work great. Many people use cellphones for the photo tours and enjoy shooting that way.
