Horrible customer service
Dec 2019 • Solo
Gift card scam review. I'm incredibly dissatisfied with their customer service. I purchase a gift card in the store, and when I made this purchase, I was told by the cashier that this gift card would be redeemed online. The gift card was for a family member, and I mailed the gift card to my relative when they tried to redeem the gift card online, the purchase did not go through, so I figured not a big deal. I'll reach out to them and explain everything. I called and was transferred to the manager would say there's nothing that they could do; I explained that I had the receipt as well a photo of the gift card since I did not have the actual gift card, and the manager was rude. I will not be shopping here again.

My new favorite grocery
Jan 2020
I have a hard time finding certain spices where I live, so when I come to NYC Kalustyan's is my new go-to. I went there for the first time this week, looking for kala namak (black Himalayan salt that is more of a spice than a salt) and they had it! I also managed to pick up enough items to fill 2 shopping bags. This is also the only place I've found where I can buy fresh curry leaves, essential in southern Indian cooking. It is a labyrinth of spices, beans, grains, and teas. I fell so hard for this amazing grocery that I also bought an Indian cookbook. Love this place.

Bring an extra suitcase

Everything you can think of and more!! Seriously, bring an extra suitcase when you shop here. We bought so many different types of teas and spices that we are considering buying another suitcase just to get everything home

Very interesting grocery store in what used to be known as Little Armenia
Jan 2019
I was delighted to find this grocery store. Its original owner was an Armenian immigrant. His last name was, or course, Kalustyan. He established the store when this whole neighborhood was known as Little Armenia, due to the large amount of Armenians who lived there. As time passed, they moved to other areas. But Kalustyan's remained.

The store is filled with amazing varieties of jams, teas, spices, nuts, dried fruits. herbs, rices, grains. If you are looking for a specific ingredient that is difficult to find, or if you want inspiration and want to try new flavors, go to Kalustyan's.

I frequent Kalustyan's at least once a week to stock up on pantry essentials. This is by far the most incredible specialty market in the neighborhood, with everything from Turkish and Middle Eastern spices to dried fruits, nuts, oils, and grains. If you're stopping by, be sure to grab a batch of their fresh hummus or homemade tahini.

Favorite store with apalling disregard for cleanliness
Dec 2018 • Solo
Kalustyan's has been on of my favorite shops in the city for 30+ years and it makes me sad to leave this feedback. Hopefully they will address the issue because I'd like to keep shopping there for 30 more years.

Yesterday I walked in and the first thing I saw was a little girl of about 10 crouching by the bulk candy jars opposite the cashiers, reaching in and pulling out chunks of chocolate. There were 2 cashiers on duty, neither paying attention. I loudly asked someone to stop her. Her father told her she was only allowed to sniff and she put the unwrapped chunks of chocolate that she'd been handling back in the jar. The cashiers raised no objections to that or to her sticking her face in the jars to sniff.

Then the girl started pulling out pieces of candied citron rind and put some in her mouth. Again, I asked someone to stop her. The mother told her to stop and the girl SPIT THE CANDIED CITRON INTO THE JAR. The cashiers were watching and silent. I called to a cashier saying the girl had spit back into the jar. The mother said, "Well it's done, what do you want me to do?" The cashier told me they'd take the citron out.

The parents were appalling but that's not the point. The store staff should have stepped in and stopped this. It should not have been up to another customer to address the situation. I later asked one of the cashiers if they were silent because they were afraid management wouldn't back them up. They said that I'd already addressed it and that taken a layer out of the citron jar. A layer? How could she tell which sticky, candied rind pieces were spitty? That whole jar should have been removed & charged to the customer, along with that chocolate. This is a health hazard.

I can understand the cashiers not feeling empowered to deal with certain entitled, arrogant customers but they should ALWAYS have access to a manager who can and will take care of a situation like this. This should have been nipped in the bud, and not by another customer. Kalustyan's, you need to clean up your act, support your checkout staff, and ensure that someone on staff is monitoring the bulk sweets & nuts jars. And get rid of that spitty jar of citron rind.

Fresh Lemongrass
Jul 2018 • Solo
I will actually make up excuses to come here! It is a lesson in world food and spices. I love to just roam the aisles and read the labels. Inevitably I make my way upstairs to the wonderful deli for olives. The gentlemen behind the counter are so warm and friendly and patient! It is a treat just to browse the store, oh, and I got the fresh lemongrass.

Delicious Aromas, Delightful Sights, Well Organized
Aug 2018 • Couples
We dropped into the store while waiting for our bus. We decided, once we entered, we needed to come back and spend a whole day in this multi-floor, multi-building store. It has more spices than we've seen in one place and they made the store smell heavenly. We saw lots of hot sauces. All kinds of canned and bottled goods were available. The Middle Eastern candies we got were delicious as were the dried fruits. We saw many refrigerated units but didn't have time to explore and couldn't have bought any for the trip back to MD. The prices were reasonable and at the time we went, if one paid with cash, there was a discount.
