As an architecture buff, I have been a big fan of Frank Gehry for years. But I somehow missed the news of this 76-story skyscraper, designed by him, opening in Lower Manhattan in 2011. When I saw this stainless-steel tower shimmering in the sun just south of City Hall Park, I recognized Gehry's work immediately and approached the building for a closer look. Its first five floors display a reddish-tan brick covering and hold a public elementary school. Luxury rental apartment units fill the upper floors in one of the tallest residential towers in the world. The tower features a rippled effect on all but the south facade. Public plazas sprawl on the east and west sides of the magnificent structure, known as New York by Gehry. I had to break off my inspection to take a tour of the nearby Woolworth Building's lobby. I think that Gehry's gem is a present-day equal to this superb historic structure.…

Saw this unique building by chance during our bus tour. Very typical of Frank Gehry's architecture, which is 'wavey' and goes with the flow. His other design is the Guggenheim museum on the West side of Central Park.
