I tried the mozzarella sticks and chicken parm. Both were outstanding. Friends tried a sandwich and said it was great. Everything was Reasonably priced for the area. The gelato was great. Staff were very friendly. One of the girls helped me out the door and made sure I had a bench to sit on.

No doubt about it, each and every my family drives to NYC ( 2 hr drive), we make a point of going to Alleva's around 9:30-10 for breakfast... you read it right, Breakfast... we alway have "JOE" make us a fresh Prosciutto, Mozzarella, Roasted Pepper and balsamic sandwich, which he always cuts for us in half or 3rds... It's $14.00 and it's such a special treat...it's fuels our day, and it's so fresh and tasty that it fills us up for hours!...this place is a hidden gem.. and Joe and the staff are so friendly... I wouldn't dream of not stopping in!..Then we get to sit outsideon one of the benches, enjoy it and it's always the start of a great day!... For us it's tradition and I wouldn't want it any other way!..

Were it not for the tour guide informing us, we would have bypassed Alleva Dairy because their signage speaks mainly to their offering of cheeses. However, once you step in side you realize it is a great place to get a freshly made Italian cold-cut sub/sandwich.
I watched as the counterman freshly sliced all the meats and cheeses for my classic Italian cold-cut sub and stacked them on a freshly baked Italian sub roll. He even offered me a piece of freshly sliced prosciutto to enjoy while he sliced!
The final product was packed with meat and was absolutely delicious. If you're in Little Italy, at the corner of Grand and Mulberry St, and you're hungry, definitely stop in!

We went in and my partner asked the older lady, ‘excuse me do you have any cannolis left’, she huffed and appeared annoyed. Her reply ‘I don’t know, ask someone else’, she turned around and ignored us. Would I return if they were not moving/closing. Nobody got time for that.

I visited this cheese shop because I read that it is the oldest in the US - established in 1892. I had a lovely experience. The service was so friendly and helpful. I asked for recommendations and was advised to get the ricotta and the truffle cheese. Both were delicious.

If you are Italian and look for good Italian product stay away from this place! They don't have prices on some of the product and you are never sure what are going to charge. They have expired products on the shelf. I asked for half pound of prosciutto and got one pound. It was overpriced and very bad quality. Very disappointed.

We went here specifically bc of the rave reviews of the fresh mozzarella. I ordered a mozzarella stick and was disappointed to see the guy pop it in the microwave before he gave it to me. It was fine, but the breading tasted a bit like the oil was old and it was super thick. My husband got some of the gelati from outside the store and thought it was very good.

My son is very in tune with his Italian heritage and enjoys cooking homemade Italian dishes. One day he came across Scamorza Cheese while researching Italian cheeses and has been dying to try it ever since. We live in Texas and struggle to find it locally. On a recent trip to NYC we thought what better place to look than Little Italy. We happened upon this small deli with all its meats and cheeses, alas... scamorza! However it was not available to slice and with the weather being so hot we just couldn’t walk around the city with a large ball of cheese. The owner felt so bad that she offered my children some fresh mozzarella on the house. My son’s face lit up and we couldn’t help ourselves, we purchased two rice balls (one with sauce, one without). These rice balls were the best I’d ever had and her sauce was UH-mazing!!!!! The owner was so friendly and thoughtful, her deli so clean and fresh. The next time we visit NYC this will be the first stop!

It's true that Little Italy seemed mostly touristy and less authentic like I read; however, that is not the case with Alleva! We went in for cheeses and salumi to take home. The two men in there were so helpful - they answered all our questions, helped us pick out stuff that would travel well, and even gave us yummy samples to try! They truly reminded me of what you would expect from a neighborhood cheese and meat store in New York City. They had a nice selection of cheeses, meats, desserts, sandwiches, noodles, sauces, etc. We really enjoyed it and would definitely go back. Just great guys! (In reference to the yes/no answers below - this is a little meat/cheese/deli type of neighborhood store, so some q's and a's may not really apply.)
