I visited this cheese shop because I read that it is the oldest in the US - established in 1892. I had a lovely experience. The service was so friendly and helpful. I asked for recommendations and was advised to get the ricotta and the truffle cheese. Both were delicious.

If you are Italian and look for good Italian product stay away from this place! They don't have prices on some of the product and you are never sure what are going to charge. They have expired products on the shelf. I asked for half pound of prosciutto and got one pound. It was overpriced and very bad quality. Very disappointed.

I made a huge mistake yesterday. I was in Di Pallo with a huge line trying to buy a half pound of prosciutto. Line was too long so I went to plan B which was Alleva. No line no problem. I ordered a pound of prosciutto thin sliced It was $26.95 per pound and normal for 2 year old top quality I took it home to NJ and what I got was very dry , thick prosciutto that was terrible. Had to throw it out. There is no reason not to have the best quality. This place does not make it. Too bad Alleva was always very good with the original owners but with this new group the place is no good any more. There is a reason why Di Paola up the street has a long line. Learned my lesson.

It is amazing what childhood memories will do to you and when I stepped into Alleva for the first time in decades, I was overcome with emotion. The very first time I was in that store was 54 years ago in a very different world in a very different situation. I absolutely could not believe that the place was almost exactly the same, and even the big tiled back wall with the built-in classic Italian signage had not changed one iota. The mozzarella was just as big, juicy, and delectable as it was in the mid-Sixties, and the Arancino was huge, meaty, and lip-smacking delicious. The staff was magnificently friendly, the selection of Italian goodies extremely thorough, and all that was missing was a Time Machine to go back to that earlier and more innocent age... Sigh...

Stumbled across this gem of a store while exploring the neighborhood. They were so friendly & helpful! We tried the cheese-stuffed peppers & the prosciutto wrapped in mozzarella - so delicious! We were disappointed that we were unable to purchase things to take home as we were leaving the country but we were given a card so that we could call and place an order.
