The minute we were guided to walk through a suspicious alley, I began to appreciate the thoughts that went into this watering hole. Not that I know what it was like during the prohibition era (closest I came to it was binge watching Boardwalk Empire😄), the tea cups, period specific furniture, and lighting drew us all in to stay for... Great bar! Quirkiness abounds! From the small, inconspicuous gated entry, to drinks served in tea cups and mugs! Great atmosphere. It was packed the night we went, but it wasn't an issue getting served at the bar!

This little speak easy is great!! They have live Jazz on Mondays and the drinks are served in tea cups. If you find it you will love it!

You go through this dark shady alley, with no signs for The Back Room. And somewhere close to Sunita Bar, you go down a flight of stairs (because many people are going there too). And then go up another flight of stairs. And then you open the door to enter this place. Packed to the hilt on a Thursday evening.... More

Another favorite speakeasy in New York, most likely because the novelty of serving alcohol in teacups and brown paper bags hasn't worn off on me yet. :P The music can be hit or miss though... I have one memory dancing to some really great classic 90's songs with some friends and another where I'm sitting at the bar with a... More

This place is a REALLY cool spot. You get drinks in teacups, lounge around on olden era styled couches and wonder at the mysterious room behind the bookcase! All you need is a sexy flapper outfit, some suspenders Abd your ID.

Yes, the alley is dark, damp and dank as you walk down the up to get to the door of this speakeasy. Look for the toy cars. We came early so the vibe was just getting started. We have been to many other of the speakeasy bars in NYC and I would say the drinks are not as creative and... More

I really enjoyed my visit to the Back Room - after wandering the streets for a bit, we eventually found the entrance and loved the feel of it - trying to imagine what it would have been like back in the 20s. The decor was lovely inside. The bartender was very welcoming and happy to talk through the cocktail menu... More

What a fun time we had at this "throw back" prohibition bar. From the moment you walk up to the gate and down the dark alley and up the stairs, you are already hooked. Was disappointed to see the bad reviews of this place b/c my hubs and I (in our 50's) and our son and his wife (in their... More

Staying in Lower East Side

Neighborhood Profile
Lower East Side
Straddling the bridge between New York’s thriving immigrant past and its modern transformation into a beacon of global art and culture, the Lower East Side is one of the most dynamic neighborhoods in the city. The blocks of tenements that represented the promise and blight of the Lower East Side immigrant experience now command top dollar for new residents. Right next to old-world delis, 24-hour bodegas, and the garment shops of Orchard Street, you’ll find hip clubs, fashionable bistros, and luxury hotels beckoning at all hours of the evening. If you love nightlife and live music, it’s hard to beat the scene here.
