Ended up on the gospel tour after my food tour was cancelled. A bit disappointed by that but this tour was pretty good. Our guide was very knowledgeable but would have liked to get a bit more feel of Harlem as the walking tour part was only 1.5 hours and then 1 hour at the church, which was interesting and... More

A no nonsense walking tour of Harlem starting at the Malcolm X Boulevard and finishing of at 125. The tour included a visit to the Apollo Theatre with the newly minted name of Prince in the path in front following his premature demise. Alan Owen, our Sprightly 88 year old harlemite has resided in Harlem since the 1950s and was... More

My Girlfriend and I decided overnight to travel from Boston to Harlem. Although I grew up in Broolkyn, I never ventured up to Harlem much. Fast forward 30 years later. I go back just to take this tour. Neal Shoemaker was an experienced Tour guide. He "knows" HARLEM. I strongly recommend this Walking Tour. Make sure you wear very comfortable... More

Harlem Heritage Tours operate a number of walking tours in the Harlem area. We completed their Gospel tour yesterday, Sunday, in order to take in a church service. The guided tour starts with a briefing of the tour and the history of area by business owner Neil at their office. Neil has a real passion for the African American experience... More

Went for a walking tour with the most amazing tour guide - Andy. Very authentic experience, with a surprise visit to a block party with live music!

My husband & I were lucky enough to have tour guide Andy, a sprightly octogenarian, all to ourselves on a rainy Wednesday night. Thoroughly enjoyed the evening & were impressed with Andy's knowledge of, and passion for, all things Harlem. Would happily return. Was really easy to get to the meeting point on the subway too.

Neal Shoemaker provided a local's view of Harlem while also explaining the various political, economic, and cultural forces at play in the neighborhood. Beginning with his own life story (he was raised in Harlem), he then delved into local history. We learned about the Masjid Malcolm Shabazz mosque, where Malcolm X preached, and the Apollo Theater, where Duke Ellington performed.... More

I called the tour company on a day nothing was scheduled....no problem! Within 5 minutes we had Andy, our 88 year old, long time resident, who had so much information, we actually asked him to slow down. And, he out paced us too. Andy is a wonderful guide and I highly recommend him and the Harlem Heritage Tours. This was... More

The foundation of Neal Shoemaker's tours are the relationships and experiences he has cultivated during his time living and working in Harlem. I doubt you'll match this level of service from any other Harlem tour. Combining a well paced mix of walking, talking, drinking and dining: Neal provides a great introduction for tourists to this vibrant and colourful region of... More
