The doorman promised places which could not be used, so we had to stand on the way of the bar tenders, going in an out all time. We felt cheated... so we left in the middle of a band playing, Georgia Brown... When we talked to the doorman just said i'm sorry, no accountability for his unfeasible proposal. Of course... More

Looking around you would feel as if you were in Tokyo. 55 seems to be hot on their tourist guides. I first visited 10 years ago and it has not changed a bit. Great music, great scene, fun... Was let down because they had no single malts.

I must admit when I looked inside this bar, I was a little worried about being in a place with what looked like one exit but ventured in anyways. It was worth every bit of anxiety about being inside smaller style venues that are truly old school. Don't look for fancy here but if you're a fan of live music... More

This place is a great dive bar. Very cool place and there is always a good band line up. Usually a $15 cover charge and a two drink minimum per set but that is everywhere in NYC. A price I will gladly pay to keep the jazz scene alive in the city...

Really enjoyed my visit to 55 Bar. Loved the cocktails at the bar from a cool, friendly barman. The music was mesmerising - fantastic skill by the whole band. Small crowd which made it even more special! Am pining for good, live jazz/blues bars in my hometown.

We visited the 55Bar twice, first on a Thursday, second time on Saturday. It is a tiny bar, holds maybe 50 people. The doorman (Irish) were just one of the friendliest and easy going poeple we met in the City. The bar looks run down and weary and gives you a feeling that you are treading historical jazz and blues... More

The live music was GREAT!!!! Not exactly a dive bar...but close! The band we saw was really Blues more than Jazz, but exceptional none the less! It has a casual & relaxed atmosphere. It has that earthy Chicago feel.We thoroughly enjoyed it!

As a life long New Yorker - whenever I'm in the West Village, after 7PM - this place is a "must check out" to see who's playing. Usually, the band and/or group is top quality. The bar never disappoints. It's a typical small, dark, kinda dreary, old world 30's speak-easy, Greenwich Village establishment (if they modernized the place, it would... More

Staying in West Village

Neighborhood Profile
West Village
Stretching from Sixth Avenue to the Hudson River, the West Village is one of the city’s most coveted addresses. Full of trendy shops, historic taverns, and cozy restaurants set amid 19th century architecture, this neighborhood has a unique old-world feel. You won’t find a more picturesque location in Manhattan. Without the traditional city grid layout, it’s easy to get lost here, but that’s part of the fun as you stroll down elegant narrow streets with beautiful brownstones. When you need a break, you can always stop in at one of the many quaint eateries or cafes to soak in the atmosphere, or head to the western edge of the neighborhood to enjoy magnificent waterfront views while taking a leisurely walk in Hudson River Park.
