Address
Neighborhood: Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.

We had a sightseeing pass and chose this as 1 of the attractions to see. You had to queue outside to get in and then again downstairs to get your tickets - it was a long queue and I'm sure they could have a better system. You then have to come back at your allotted time. The view at the top I have to say however was worth it. We bought 2 of the "staged" pictures for $30.05

Definitely better than the Empire State Building experience but be prepared to use your elbows. People nowadays lack manners, and you need to be assertive to get a nice view. I recommend the attractions' organizers help out - make the people move who like to press their phones up to the glass for 50 minutes for a stupid social media post and hang out on their other phone, while others try to actually want to see the view. It takes away other people's ability to enjoy what they paid to see.

Other than that, my boyfriend and I spent about 45 minutes walking around at different angles during sunset and watching the city go from day to night. I recommend booking ahead 1 - 2 days to get an optimal time. We chose 20 minutes before sunset on a warm August night and loved it. This is more of a one and done type of deal. Wouldn't pay to do it again, but would recommend to people who are first-time visitors to NY and haven't see the skyline.

Everyone flocks to the Empire State Building, which makes sense, the outlook is 16 floors higher than Top of the Rock. But here's the catch; you can't see the Empire State Building when you're on it, so Top of The Rock gets you a fantastically high view that includes the iconic building. Give yourself plenty of time to explore; with elevator lines up and down, book at least 90 minutes for this. The view is amazing at night and then make sure you reserve time afterwards to skate at the Rink at Rockefeller. It's a perfect evening.

I made reservations for six people for 9:00 pm. When we arrived (almost 9 pm) there was a queue of people. We told the guy in the front that we have reservations for 9:00 pm and he said that we need to make the line. So, we followed his instructions. Then, after 10 minutes, he passed by asking for tickets and I mentioned to him again about our reservations and he, again, told us to keep in the line. I start hearing the people in front of us with reservations for 9:45pm and he explained that the people that were entering were from reservations from 9:20 pm or earlier. So I told him “9pm?” and he replied in front of all the ones that were in front of us in the line (in a very sarcastic, unprofessional, unethical and rude way) “if I said 9:20 or earlier and you have 9:00 then 9:00 is prior to 9:20 so, yes, you can go in”. What type of person respond to that way to a customer who respectfully asked him twice about the reservations? And believe me, I have a lot of patience. I don’t know how the company have people like that representing them. Is a shame! Not recommended at all.

We booked tickets on line for $38 plus an extra $10 as we wanted to go at sunset (the start of fleecing you for every penny). A small queue and through security and you’re then herded to have greenscreen photos taken on girder as per the famous workers photo.

We tried to watch the 4 minute film re the history of the building but was told to get in the lift ASAP or we’d miss the sunset!!?? (It was an hour before sunset).

Next we get into an ultra fast lift which was great and at the top you can roam between 3 levels with very top one having no barriers so you get a fantastic 360 view.

It took a long time between the sun going down and it being the night view (and it’s freezing up there) so plan that in.

We went to look at the photos which weren’t that great and they wanted $30 for 1 or $34 for both!! An absolute rip off for photos and gift shop was equally extortionate compared to other NY shops!!

Whilst the views were great (though there are other great views for free) the whole thing felt like sheer robbery!!

We went on the top of the rock in December, it was very crowded, but we bought a city pass before arriving in New York and with this you need simply to book day and time and show up at the entrance. There was sometime to wait but it worth it. We went on the top just before the sunset and it was amazing!!! We highly recommend to go during this time of the day, lights and colors are beautiful and the atmosphere is magic!!!

The Top of the Rock is the shortest of the buildings to be visited, and that's also why it's the best one to choose to go during sunset and night time. From it you can see all the other buildings with night lights on. Just incredible. You can go to very top of it for no extra charge.

This is a great way to experience New York City but do be prepared for some queuing.

Buy tickets online or in person at the Top of the Rock reception at -1 level, inside the Rockefeller Centre. We queued for about 5 mins for tickets at 2pm on a weekday, then had a 45 min wait until our time slot.

You then queue up on the pavement at the north side of the Rockefeller building, where there is a red carpet, to get inside. There's another queue for airport-style security, then a queue to have photos taken (you can skip this), then a queue while you watch videos on the building's history, then a queue for a lift... be prepared to be very patient!

When you do get to the top, there are 3 floors and views of the whole city skyline. The first floor has some enclosed sections to shield from the wind, where the top two are open air.

Views are great in the day time when you can see all of Central Park and the detail on all the buildings.

Oh, and there's a queue to get down again when you're finished...

We visited here late night in February and there were no lines and plenty of space to view the city. The lights are just amazing to see from that view. You're sitting in the middle of it all, high enough to see all the buildings but not too high that you're looking down on everything. The only thing we had trouble with was getting a little mixed up inside the building when trying to find the entrance to the observatory and also the exit. Lots of stairs and escalators! The staff was very helpful.

For those who have passes, please make sure you read up on how to use them here. You have to purchase "timed" tickets to reserve your time slot for viewing. YES even with a pass as you have to scan it to receive your time. It was not a big deal for us considering it was not busy at all but I am sure during peak months and times it can get crowded. I can't believe people are upset about this with the passes...it clearly says in the directions AND the website for Top of the Rock that you MUST redeem a ticket at the counter. There is no need to rate a one star for your lack of preparation.

Extreme unpleasant,
(1) overcrowded and super disorganized, bought four adults to see the sunset, with the crowds our 4:05 pm tickets we could pass the front door only by 4:25 and get into the top itself be later 4:40. That said obviously lost the sunset ($+10/person). In addition a fourth person was not even able to get into in time due the super line.
(2) Staff was super rude - offensive and yelling to us.
Disappointed and disrespected.

Yes they indeed have a nice sight, but after going to both TOP and Empire Estate I can say that the latter is definitely better (although a small $ premium).
Finally do recommend Empire given this disrespect and long lines regular likely experience in the TOP of the Rock.
