I visited this Church back in 2015 in November.
I had not heard of this church and it was my first time in the Big Apple and I was travelling solo.
So I was a bit nervous going into an American church for the first time, I am from London.

From the moment I entered the building though, I felt totally af ease and the peace and presence of God was palpable.
I am a pentecostal, and this is a Baptist church, but I was made so welcome, just beautiful Christlike people.

I will definitely go back there when I am next in New York.
I even asked for prayer, and the Pastor made a point of spending time talking and praying with me.
The building is stunning and you can feel the history there of the Black African American struggles, not to be missed.

Book in advance! it is easy and you can avoid headache!
We bought tickets in advance so we did not have to wait. Be there early!
It was a great experience. Never had a chance before to listen to gospel, it was amazing. Great singers and the whole spirit was so good. Also the staff at the entrance were very nice. Local people organize it I m happy that could support them. Keep going!

Instead of paying tickets to go to a Gospel show I recommend to go to a real church and experience a real service. Everybody is welcome to Mount Olivet Baptist Church. We are not regular church visitors but felt very welcome and there was a warm and happy atmosphere. And some really good Gospel! Be aware that the service is almost two hours. Some tourists left in the middle and we found that rude.

We came here December 24th 2016 when we arrived the music wasn't set up. We waited for 50 min for them to finish the set up and start singing. The musicians and singers did not go along together. Drummer was awful. They sounded like they never had practice the songs before. Director wasn't any good. Untalented crew. Half of the public left. Mics did not work. We could only hear the musicians very loud. We struggled the experience and wouldn't want anyone to go through what we went through.

We went to the Sunday worship and were cordially welcomed. We felt very included in the service even though we were there mostly for the gospel and couldn't call ourselves frequent church-goers. We were specifically addressed and blessed by the pastor. The gospel was great. This is an authentic church, and definetely not one just for tourists. If you want to visit a real Sunday worship in Harlem, I cannot enough recommend Mt Olivet!

The church was packed.... the performance was due to begin at 11am... the sound system was still being set up after 11...and technicians fiddled around for well over a half hour while the choir stood around onstage in disarray. We wanted inspirational music of faith and family, and what we got was an amateurish production that took so long to get to that magical place that well over 25% of the audience had left already. Great promise, weak delivery.

I look through my pictures and this church was earlier build for the Jewish synagogues before it was taken over by the Church in 1920s after it was built in the 1900s.

Remarkable history to read about. When you pass it accidentally, now after going through and finding the history is very beautiful story of a building of a century old.
