While I'm glad to see some actual physical bookstores still remaining in the city, the highly regarded St. Marks was a bit of a let down in terms of size and selection. The shelves housed mostly best sellers and mass market paperbacks, nothing rare or unique. The staff picks section was also nothing you couldn't find in the New York times or online. I was looking for a little more personality from a real life bookstore and didn't find it here.

This is a quaint bookshop located in the East Village on 3rd Avenue near Saint Marks Place. It was larger than I had expected and the variety of books was very impressive. The prices were a bit high for my taste, but they did have unusual books.

A visit to New York City always included a few hours in St. Mark's Bookshop for its great selection of hard-to-find books and helpful, friendly staff. On a recent visit to New York City, my daughter and I walked (a rather long distance) from our hotel to check out the new location on Third Avenue to look for a copy of a small publication I found there many years ago. I waited at the counter while the clerk ignored me. When I finally asked if the store had a copy of the publication, she just rudely said, "No." Most recently, I received a request from St. Mark's to help with funding to keep the bookstore open. With staff unwilling to help customers, I doubt if they will have the dedicated customers to help them. I won't return.

Cute little bookshop that seemed to just have some different types of books. Certainly somewhere you would find that different type of gift.

Nice bookstore. Crappy clerks. "No we do not have a public restroom!" I was told. But, says I, you invite the public on ti buy books!" Clerk pretended not to understand.
Some places don't get it. Obviously this is one. Non-customer friendly. Don't spend your cash here.

I've been a fan of this bookstore for many years and have followed it through two re-locations within its East Village neighborhood. Without the slightest doubt, this is is one of the world's great bookstore. I put it on par with the top book stores I've visited in Oxford, London, Paris, Rome & Tokyo. I've found books here that I have loved and authors I have followed that I have seen few other places. Consider this a must-see store. They keeps pretty traditional hours but my sons, 25 & 19, especially love to skulk around the stacks late at night. I might also add that it is a bit of a scene. I've seen Patti Smith, Sam Shepherd and the late Susan Sontag in the store. Custom dictates that they not be disturbed. Run, don't walk to St. Mark's. Bring a healthy credit card! You will be rewarded.
