Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone
Jan 2018
I'll miss Sunshine with its unique atmosphere and film selection. There was always something interesting playing that no other theaters had. Closing it is such a disgrace--the theater could be preserved even with offices on top. The iconic facade should be preserved at the very least. The city is losing cultural treasures at an alarming pace, and destroying this one for a bland glass box would be a crime. I wish I had visited more!

A gem from the past
Aug 2017 • Friends
One of the landmark theaters in NYC. On East Houston St.

The theaters have an entrance area with refreshments, tables and chairs to wait for your show to start while waiting or chatting with friends.
The staff is friendly and attentive.

The cinema second and third floors are access by stairs or elevator. Each floor has two small auditoriums. Do not expect stadium seating, but the old fashioned type.

My friends and I have gone recently twice for their Royal Opera House Live Series of Ballet and Opera. Great venue. We like it.

The area is easily access by subway, the F train is the closest to the theater.

I just read that the theater will be closing next year. That would be a shame.

A gem
Apr 2017
This is our standard spot for "let's catch a movie while in NYC". A fine selection of films - mainly art or limited release. Clean and small theatres. And almost always attendees are watching the movies and not talking and texting.

This is one reason to love NYC, you can always find some cool flick at this well run independent gem. Great variety of documentaries and foreign films.

Sunshine Cinema (NYC) - Excellent Quiet & Cozy Movie Theatre
May 2016 • Family
My family and I went to see the Miles Davis movie called 'Miles Ahead' that was playing in selected theaters. The movie theater was very comfortable, quiet, cozy with a nice sound system.

Art House Movies in a funky space
Jun 2015
We have seen several movies in this unique move theatre, which typically runs many first run art house movies from the Americas and Europe. The East Village location gives it a Bohemian feel, which makes you feel "in the know."

Best Indie Movie Theater in NYC
Apr 2016 • Friends
I went with a friend this past Sunday to see "Rio, I love you " at the Sunshine Theater. Prices are very good in NYC for movies, they always have great Indie movies, multiple screens, great comfortable seating, elevators for handicap, and tired people. They also have a great concession stand serving some healthy foods, for your pleasure, as well as the usual pop corns and hot dogs. I must say again the seats are very comfortable. The bathrooms are on every other floor are very clean, as are the theaters. If you come to NYC or are a resident and want to see some great films in a great classic setting then this is your place! There is the second ave bus stop as well as the Houston Street crosstown bus right in front of the theater. Street parking is impossible so forget your cars. BTW the F train stops across the street at the 2nd ave/ Allen/ Houston st. stop.

Good old style cinema - nice selection of films
Jul 2015
Indie films and foreign films! Don't go see a mainstream American Film in NYC. See something different. We took in "Tangerine" - an award winning film shot entirely with an iPhone camera. It follows a day in the lives of two transgender people in LA. All authentic events. Very engaging and interesting. The theater is older but still comfortable. We didn't try the snacks.

Great Selection of Films and Q&As with the directors etc.
Jul 2015 • Friends
I'm staying in New York for the summer and as a film fanatic this venue has become a second home. Saw Boulevard here followed by a Q&A with the films director which was informative and entertaining. (On the same day Tangerine's director was also doing a Q&A as was someone associated with the Amy Winehouse documentary). Any film buff should check this theatre out.

Great cinema with an excellent choice of films
May 2015 • Couples
Went here on the last night of our trip to New York. Fancied seeing a film, so did a search and this cinema came up as showing two good looking foreign films which I fancied seeing. Very nice place. Five screens, all showing good stuff, and they sell DVDs and movie paraphernalia as well. The theatre chairs were comfortable and the audience well behaved.
