There are other great bars within blocks, save yourself the waste of time.

I had closed down two other piano bars and was traveling with patrons and staff from Marie's Crisis Cafe (which is a wonderfully welcoming bar so very close by, if you want a good place to go for your music fix... Or Try The Monster, also close, or The Stonewall Inn... Another nearby, iconic and friendly place). I asked the pianist if I could please take a photo of him, as I had asked of the performers and patrons at other establishments (following the protocol established by the sign at Marie's Crisis behind the piano). The performer said, "not in this lighting," I said, "no problem, I have a professional light with diffuse warm lighting." I went to get the light and went to take the picture. The pianist said, "oh no, that's too bright," so I didn't take the picture and left. The staff then immediately closed my tabe and kicked me out. I asked why, they said you're not welcome here. I asked why, I asked the performer, followed all their rules and didn't take the picture when they said they were uncomfortable. They continued to be rude to me, said for me to sign my check and get out. I still tipped them at least 20%. I was not belligerent in any way, followed all their rules and verbal instructions, was there with industry folks (many of which can vouch for my courteous comportment, both in SF and NY). Needless to say, I see other 1 star reviews on here talking about the rude, dismissive, and disrespectful treatment from the staff at this establishment. I agree with these assessments. Please save yourself the trouble and go to one of the other, pleasant, welcoming, friendly, establishments that are all within a block or two, such as Stonewall Inn, The Monster, or Marie's Crisis Cafe. Save yourself the indignity.

Was overcharged one night I was there. Staff charged me for 11 drinks when I only had a few. I contacted management about it and they were rude and made nasty comments pretty much laughing in my face. Will never go there again. Nasty staff and management

I've been going to The Duplex for years. Went to the Upstairs bar where there's ALWAYS good music AND fun videos. HOWEVER the last time we went I was charged $13.50 for a Cosmo which was served in a small glass AND not even a full pour. Did I mention this was during Happy Hour? What ever happened to pouring the remaining cocktail left in the shaker into the customers glass instead of dumping it out in the sink? You do NOT serve a cocktail 3/4 full and charge $13.50 with a side of curt perfunctory attitude.

I had come here for many years whenever I was in New York. It WAS the best gay singalong bar in the village.
Now straight couples are gathering there to watch gays in their habitats like in the zoo. Gay were absolutely The minority there. The music is still good but it is no fun there anymore. So often, if making money overrules Tradition it becomes bad. We did not feel comfortable there anymore. Lots of other gay visitors left early too. If you order beer at the bar it is 7,00 at a table 10,00 and you have to have 2 per person minimum.
Don’t waste you money there. There are still some nicer gay neighbourhood bars around like the Jules for e.g.

Be careful with this place. It’s one of those traps where they force you to pay for expensive drinks when you go support your friends in shows there. They don’t even have options for people that don’t drink. No tea coffee, iced tea, not even milk. Best choice is a bottle of water for 5.50 + 20% forced gratuity.

Usually one of my must goes!
Walked in tonight and “T-Rex” held a sign in my face about min two drinks! She was one of the worst waitresses I have had at the duplex. Shame it is such a fun place .... usually!!

Intimate setting to enjoy a great individual show. Tea with Bea was a trip down memory lane in the life of a comedy icon - Beatrice Lilly. Well researched and great acting. Delightful time!!

The Duplex is the epitome of Greenwich Village. While the piano played in the background ,we sat outside and watched the locals and travelers a like walk the streets of the Village. While sipping our drinks we were approached by a wonderful transvestite palm reader who read our palms. Our waiter was also very lively, helpful and fun.

The Duplex is a West Village piano bar. Unlike other piano bars, there is no cover charge, and drink prices are reasonable. The bartenders double as professional singers, and the piano player will play most requests (a tip will help!). To experience the Duplex is to have a joyful, happy time with patrons singing along. If you love modern music, the Duplex is a must-see.

I love piano bars but this one is even better than most because the staff and fellow patrons are so friendly. Found this place last year and couldn't resist going back on our vacation this year. Will be a must stop place for me every time in NYC. Just a lot of fun. .
