Neighborhood: Greenwich Village
Commonly known as “the Village” to New Yorkers, it was here in Greenwich Village that both 1960’s counter culture and the LGBT movement were born. Famous for its bohemian past, head to Washington Square Park to get a feel for this diverse and energetic neighborhood. You’ll find NYU students, street performers, skateboarders, kids frolicking in the fountain, and locals relaxing and playing chess. Stroll the streets to discover a mix of majestic town homes and hidden bars and restaurants that give this neighborhood an old-school residential feel. When the sun goes down, check out one of the famous jazz or comedy clubs that still packs them in every night.
How to get there
  • West 4th St – Washington Square • 1 min walk
  • Christopher St – Sheridan Square • 4 min walk

An absolute must on your NYC trip!

Such a brilliant experience! We didn’t have tickets (I would recommend buying beforehand if you can) so we queued for Standby tickets and luckily got in for a 10pm Friday night show and it was phenomenal!! So so funny - we laughed a lot and want to go back again and again!

Will always include this on my NYC itinerary
Sep 2019
I went with my young adult son to a Saturday 11:55 pm show - we laughed SO HARD! I did make reservations - we checked in at about 11:30, still had to stand in a line until the start of the show, and there is a 2 item minimum. It was the best bang for our buck in NYC - 8 comedians in 2 hours! If they ask you if you want to sit in the front row, just be prepared - they DO make fun about you in the front row hahaha! I will always put this place on my itinerary with future NYC visits.

So good to laugh
Aug 2019
When we knew what dates we were going to be in New York, we checked the line-up to see who was playing. Actually, we checked the Comedy Cellar and saw that Michelle Wolf was doing a show with Joe List and got a reservation. The Village Underground is around the corner. There were 5 comedians in the show and all were great. Cover charge and drink prices were reasonable for New York, and the proceeds were being used as a donation to help the Rainforest. Service was very pleasant. Make sure to get reservations before going, especially for popular comedians.

Loved every minute of this, staff was good, food good, comedians were hilarious. There is a 2 menu item minimum per person but the menu prices are very reasonable. One of our best experiences while in NYC.

Good show, reasonable prices

Had a Comedy night at the Village Underground. The location is ok, staff was ok, the drinks were good, but the special prize goes for the Apple Crumble Pie, which was very tasty. Beside the strange phone rule, which is that you turn off all the phones and put them in a bag, another down side was that, in the basement was really cold.

Fri night laughs
Apr 2019 • Couples
Needed some entertainment for the 2nd night in NYC. this idea proved to be worth it for sure!

4 drinks (2 min per person) and admission will be around 100 bucks, but you can order food or just soda if ya want.

Its pretty much non-stop comedy for 90 mins.. an MC and then 4 or 5 comedians all in a row. Plus you never know who may show up there.

Some words of advice.. 1st VU is not the original comedy cellar. You really need to plan in advance for this, esp if you want be at the McDougal Street venue.

I booked about a month ahead for a fri 8pm show..mcdougal was already pretty much booked.

The VU looks just like the original on stage, but I imagine its a bit bigger...

The shows vary in price. Fri night 8pm was 24/piece.

Something to def do. If you wanna try to be star struck, Id prob shoot for mcdougal street comedy cellar.

Comedy was great, service was terrible
Feb 2019 • Couples
This is a tough review because the comedy show was among the best I've ever been to. There were two huge unannounced performers - Jim Norton and Aziz Ansari - and the entire line-up killed it. The crowd was in and it was a great vibe, especially for a 6pm show. However, it was difficult to buy our two item minimum due to the terrible service. We waited for 15 minutes at our table without any attention and then the server came as the first performance started. We ordered very tasty skewers and only received half the order. The food/drinks were very expensive (as expected) which wouldn't have been so bad if we had at least had the items in a timely fashion. At the end, it took forever to get the check and pay it as well with very confusing information about the process for leaving.

Great experience for fans of comedy clubs!
Jan 2019 • Friends
It's everything you think it will be. The comedy club session is about 90 minutes, maybe about 5-6 comedians come up and a host introduces each of them with some comedy of his own. MAKE SURE YOU MAKE A RESERVATION, the shows sell out. As expected, there's a two drink (or two menu item) minimum, but it won't break the bank. The cover charge for a Saturday night was $24, but i would go again if I were in town.

Great Comedy Club
Dec 2018 • Couples
I came here as a gift for my birthday and what a fun and memorable night. The Village Underground is a basement level comedy club that is full of laughs and character. The quality of the comedians is top notch! Highly recommended!
